4Chan Helped FBI Prevent A School Shooting ... No, Really

image

Guess what? Announcing that you plan to shoot up your school on 4Chan may result in an FBI raid on your home.

Most of the time, it seems like stories about 4Chan and the FBI have the two at odds with one another (particularly the way that the latter keeps on going after members of Anonymous for their DDoS attacks). However, it turns out that 4Chan users wound up helping the FBI out last year.

Back in November, members of the 4Chan community alerted the FBI when they discovered evidence that one of their members "Ali Saad" (pictured here) had posted threats that he was going to go on a Columbine-like shooting spree at his local community college in Michigan. Saad, it turns out, claims that his threats were a joke.

According to Switched, "Saad insists that his postings were in jest, but his claims that he could top the "high score" of Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho set off alarms with members of the /b/ community. In one of the messages, Saad said that he planned to stream his massacre on Stickam, a popular video streaming site."

Even if these comments were made in jest they're not funny, especially considering the horrific school shootings that have occurred here in the United States in recent memory. Because the community members alerted the FBI, though, the agency raided the man's proper, seized his computers, "on which they found more incriminating evidence and child pornography."

Saad is now up on felony charges for both the threats and the kiddie porn, and his trial is going to start on February 25. Based on this initial info, it sounds like the man is going to be headed to jail for quite some time. Can't say I feel too bad about that.

Epic post.

I dont like 4chan, but imes like this I actually think they arent so bad.

Well, some good news from time to time can't hurt.

for some reason, I find this "alliance" comparable with Mario and Bowser, most of the time they want to kill each other, but sometimes they cool and go play tennis together

Yeah.

There! It's fixed.

I like it when 4Chan does things like this instead of being a troll production factory.

I wonder if the FBI has some of their agents post on 4chan to keep tabs on the community there. Wouldn't surprise me at all.

I am also not a fan of 4chan but at least they did something worthwhile for once. :D

I have to admit, I've only just read that post, but it's awesome XD

I guess he shouldn't ask

Actually, I was going for more of an Austin Powers vibe.

What on earth is WRONG with people that they would threaten to murder hundreds of people on a forum that has proven its proficiency in tracking down animal abusers, massacring entire wikis and KNOCKING OVER THE FBI WEBSITE?

If nothing else, it's good to see that 4Chan is consistent in only hating the FBI over Wikileaks and aren't carrying it over into other areas.

Sounds like a terrible job. I mean, how long could you possibly remain sane if you hade to sift through gore threads and horrible, horrible pornography all day?

Okay, i know this is a serious story. There are a lot of implications to be made here.
...but i can't stop laughing. Is it wrong that i find this hilarious?

basically what everyone else says, epic post that you should get a badge for.
Also 4chan doing something like this doesn't surprise me, they've stopped other bad things in the past like this guy who was abusing his cat.

Yeah.

I'm sorry, but *SLAP* that was just bad.

Now onto the topic, I think this is kinda cool, as vile as 4chan users can get you have to admit it is pretty awesome to see this sorta thing happen.

This same exact thing happened way back in '06, prompting 4chan to include that tiny red warning label on the top of their "Random" board.

Despite this, people still think that they can get away with "joke" threats like this. Just goes to prove that you're never truly anonymous on the internet.

Yeah that guy was an idiot. You don't joke about that kind of stuff, especially when you've got kiddie porn on your computer.

4Chan doing something nice? Thats different...

Who the hell jokes about that kind of stuff? I'll say two things about the guy, he's sick, and he's an idiot.

Usually /b/ only seems to get riled up over rival boards, boxxy, and cheese pizza (so sad... so very sad I get that). I'd figure they'd have taken him for a troll.

I wonder if the FBI is going to give 4Chan a little slack for this. Probably not...

I really wonder if he got his kiddie porn on 4chan. That'd be ironic.

I really hope that the kidde porn is Real CP and not Lolis or Shotas...Leave my Lolis aloneee...I think it is Real CP because the FBI is involved and I remember a story about the FBI paying a visit to a Loli consiuer because of a tip-off and then said it was legal to the dude.

Damn wasnt quick with my edit :p
I know what it is when I posted it there, but when I had it in the caputure it looked worse.
lol I hate these things sometimes, it one thing to protect against bots but some even I dont know what they fuck they are.

He probably was joking about the shooting, but it sounds like he wasn't exactly a model citizen considering they found child porn on his computer, hope he gets a long time in prison for that rather than his shooting claims, I'm personally cheering because another potential child molestor is safely behind bars!

Murder threats AND child porn!? Sick...

4Chan got the FBI a two for one deal. Although their relationship is still pretty rocky.

Aaaaaaand news outlets continue to think 4chan is some sort of hivemind of elite internet criminals based from the glorious /b/ homeworld instead of a shitload of teenage hipsters in /b/ that the rest of the site despises (which is mostly about anime, movies, video games, and other such crap) and rejects.

At least there's a handy 'refresh' option within the Captcha toolbar.

Early captchas I had to fill in didn't have that option, and it sucked! '-_-
