Guitar Hero Could Make a Comeback, Says Kotick

Kotick claims that Activision could "re-invent" the series in the future.

Guitar Hero might be dead and buried, but according to Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, it doesn't necessarily have to stay that way. Kotick said that while music games weren't making much money right now, Activision might one day consider bringing the brand back.

Kotick said that the music game genre wasn't an area that was getting consumers excited, and so Activision had decided to focus its attention elsewhere. Activision had previously remarked to CVG that the manufacturing and licensing costs involved with music games, combined with the decline in interest, meant that the titles just weren't profitable anymore. He didn't say that Activision would bring Guitar Hero back, just that it could, after tweaking and adjusting the formula. Unfortunately - or fortunately, depending on your point of view - Kotick said that that wasn't a particularly high priority for Activision right now.

I'm not sure that Guitar Hero really needs to be reinvented; instead, a chance to cool off might be more appropriate. Since the series started in 2005, Activision has pumped out a heck of a lot of Guitar Hero games, especially between the latter half of 2008 and the start of 2010. It's not hard to see how people might start to get bored after six releases in a year - including DJ Hero - not to mention the games on mobile platforms. Perhaps after a year or two without a new Guitar or DJ Hero game, interest in music games might recover.

I guess if they release it and it is unsuccessful it will give us a good idea of how long you should wait for nostalgia to kick in.

How does one re-invent Guitar Hero?

Translated, "I'm not done milking this yet"

Oh just take it off the re-sus table already, its run its course

Well, to be honest I think a lot of the problems have to do with greedy music celebrities engaged in cash grabs. It seems to me that the decline in industry interest happened to coincide with complaints made by singers that their images could be used to sing the songs
of other bands and so on.

Given the huge number of releases for songs filling XBL and the like, I can't see people not buying them.

I'm not a genere fan, and am actually glad to see this die out a bit, but at the same time I suspect we're dealing with the game companies trying to teach the musicians a lesson about pressuring them, by simply cutting off the cash cow instead of letting them push for bigger cuts.

Also, limited sales are doubtlessly because the tech hasn't really improved that much despite the new games. You only need one plastic guitar, and once you have the songs you want, there is no need to buy more. Perhaps during the next console generation there will be enough of a differance in technology to relaunch the idea in a big way.

Get rid of the plastic guitars, replace them with coin slots; get rid of the music, replace it with a track of white noise with a subliminal message on it; replace the visuals with a picture of Kotick laughing; releasing forty titles a week; profit. That's the only thing I could imagine Activision doing, it's not like they'd come up with an original concept or anything is it?

Even if something's dead and buried, it won't stop Kotick digging it up on the chance of more money!

They should name a form of Ebola after him.

If they can actually "re-invent" the series, then maybe there'll be less of the silly GH hatred.
It'd be nice if we could get more DLC.

And yet true crime which was nearly finished isnt coming back. But the overproduced game is.
GH neeeds to stay dead, kotick just brings things back and milks them even more, worse than before e.g spyro.

This is a franchise that needs to stay dead. Just let it go Kotick, let it go.

This guy goes even beyond. He milks the milked out cashcow. This shit is serious, Kotick really LOST IT!

You have to realise that this is Bobby Kotick. "re-inventing" in his mind is perhaps, I dont know, charging 5 dollars more for the controller?

Fixed it for you...

19 games, WE DON'T NEED ANYMORE!

Going to sound like a rockband fan boy, but here goes, Rock band is way better, and they understand that no one wants to change out one of 19 discs depending on what song you want to play, just hope rockband can stay afloat in this rough sea of little plastic guitars.

Classical hero. Violin and flute PLEASE :D

Somebody needs to introduce Kotick to the concept of crop rotation. He could apply the theory to his business practices.

They knew this was a gimmick right out of the gate. Maybe if they hadn't milked it until the titties were dried out they would still be making a steady profit on this franchise.

Does this mean they're done driving that into the ground? Does this mean kids can get out now and put the effort it takes mastering Dragonforce on expert into a real instrument? That is far more fun and rewarding than pounding on a toy.

Kotick, you took the series and saturated the market. You need to step back and leave it alone.

I think its anyones guess at the moment as to whether GH will return. But to outright say it won't is just daft.

Sorry GH but as long as you're sitting the race out, RB will continue to change things. (new instruments, pro mode, overdrive revival, thousands of downloadable songs, fun over difficulty substance over style...etc)

god damn it!
I thought that bastard was dead for good!

this isnt my name:

That's the real tragedy as far as I'm concerned, yes let's bring back the already dead franchise because we still might be able to sucker people out of more money with it, but screw the next installment in a cult franchise. We don't foresee making it a profitable yearly series so we'll kill it and make sure it stays dead.

Guitar Hero needs a long long long break. Then, if the new game tanks, no more.

It needs to cool down and think of his actions.

That or just release the old ones and change nothing, just add DLC tracks with.

personally i infinitely prefer the guitar hero guitar and bass setup, but the songs in rock band tend to be better.. there are so many songs i would love to see in a guitar hero game there are definitely still things they could put in, but lately the track sets in guitar hero (most noticeably from 4, which had a few good songs, on) tended to suck as a whole... most of GH1,2,and 3 i liked, and i liked rock band 1 and 2 but after that it just got a little silly

Fun Fact!

Guitar Hero is coming back in 2012. The canceled the game that was coming out in 2011, they still haven't canceled or even announced the GH that is has already been in development for a year now.

I know that sounds odd, but I was listening to a podcast, Podcast Beyond from IGN, and one of the guys on it said that they only canceled one game, but there were two games in production.

And there was me thinking it would at least stay dead for a couple of months,I've somehow overestimated Kotick.

Reinvent. Does this fucker have any experience in game design? Or is he really just a cartoonishly evil businessman who somehow gained the reigns of one of the largest game companies in the world?

This prick gives capitalists a bad name.

Hmm... Kotick says he'll reinvent Guitar Hero? I can imagine it now.

"Well, It's been two years now, and I think we are ready to reinvent Guitar Hero"
"What do you have in mind sir"
"Picture this, we set the game......in a warzone"
"Excuse me? What do you mean by a warzone?"
"You know, a warzone, like what they did with the latest SSX"
"Except that game didn't do well.....at all.......and I'm pretty sure people will realize that we just copied EA"
"That's the best part, we release the new Guitar Hero, claim it has been in the works before SSX, and then say how they copied us"
"I don't think that's going to work sir"
"Looks like someone is hankering for their paycheck to be cut"
"Uh, what I mean is...... What else were you thinking about doing"
"Well get this, we have a different setlist, with the setlist composed songs from the previous games and DLC, and whatever we don't have in there we sell for DLC"
"I think that's just going to piss off the fans"
"They'll be too excited about the guest musicians to pay attention to that"
"Who did you have in mind?"
"Well, I'm glad you asked. I was driving to work today when I thought to myself 'Who on the radio is popular enough to draw in fans?'"
"......Oh no"
"That's right, why don't we include Justin Bieber and Ke$sha? They're popular musicians"
"First off, calling those two hacks musicians is an insult to real musicians. Second off, don't you remember Band Hero?"
"Well I lay off so many development teams that it's hard for me to keep track of who it is I actually lay off, so I guess I don't really remember"
"Sir, I have to be honest, I don't think I can help you with this project. It's just so awful both to the world of video games and the world of buisness. Nothing you can say will keep me on ths project"
"Did I tell you that I plan on adding an 8 at the end of the title?"
"I'm leaving now sir"
"Did I also tell you that I plan on adding a keyboard periphiral that we will assure everyone is original?"
-Assistant has a sudden brain embolisim due to stupidity-
"Th-tha-that sound-s brill-iant s-si-sir!"
"Well, not to brag here, but I'm not the CEO of this company for nothing"

I have a half-feeling that I'm not too far off from the truth here.

How is it all the articles don't mention their big competition and how it's doing? Ya know Rock Band?
Could that be part of why the GH games aren't selling so well?

I wish someone would reinvent Kotick so he wasn't such a idiot.

Logan Westbrook:
Perhaps after a year or two without a new Guitar or DJ Hero game, interest in music games might recover.

You know that. We know that. But does kotick know that?

Motion control guitar hero. We all know that's what's gonna happen. I'll only think of rebuying when it's all virtual reality holodeck style, and you can play direct at audiences, then get some groupie action for getting 100%
