Sucker Punch Movie Makes First TV Appearance

The very first TV spots for Sucker Punch pack samurai, robots and a dragon into a little over a minute.

Between them, American McGee and Zack Snyder seem to be conspiring to make 2011 the year of the girls-battling-bizarre-foes-in-a-fantastical-dreamscape. McGee has the end of the year covered with Alice: Madness Returns, and Snyder is handling the start of the year with the movie Sucker Punch, a film that TV audiences got its very first glimpse of this weekend.

There are actually two TV spots to watch. The first shows the main character Baby Doll in an oppressive, real-world environment, which is quickly contrasted with the warzone inside her mind. There she battles a giant samurai wielding miniguns and dragons, while things explode left, right, and center. The second spot takes a slightly different approach, hinting at how Baby Doll ended up in an institution, and then quickly juxtaposes that with more of her crazy mental exploits. This trailer has more giant samurai, but this time they have traditional weapons. There are also robots, a blimp, and what looks like a Helghast from Killzone in a World War 1 trench.

Some people will have seen a lot of this before in other, longer trailers, but for a lot of people this this will be their first look at the movie. It seems a better fit for Snyder's directing style then Watchmen was, and should give him plenty of opportunity for the over-the-top, slow motion action that he does so well.

Sucker Punch hits theaters on March 25th.

Holy crap its out on march 25th, im so pumped to see it.

..... *Gulp*

That. Looks. Awesome.
Why have I not heard about this before!?!?

I remember seeing the trailer for Sucker Punch something like 3 times when I last went to the theaters.
My initial thoughts were (and still are): "Special effects; The Movie."

It's pulling all the stops; guns, samurai, robots, and even a dragon.
The problem with this is that (contrary to the saying) you can't just throw cool/awesome shit into a movie and turn it into an "awesome movie". Dirty Harry's infamous .45 Magnum wouldn't have been half as awesome if someone had used it for, I dunno, mixing cake batter.

It might still be entertaining, but the quickest way to bore me is to provide me with characters whose sole purpose is to lead us around a special effects blue screen (See: Star Wars 1-3, Avatar).

I predict the blooming obvious: It's a dime-a-dozen action-exploitation movie trying desperately to use surrealism as an excuse to blow millions on CGI-effects.
Others will have fun with it and that's obviously fine, but I can't help but feel jaded at what appears to be a movie driven entirely by marketing.

Well it ain't Legend of the Guardians that's for sure!

Am I the only one who thinks it looks retarded? Go get Psychonauts for christ's sake, it'll be cheaper, more interesting and last longer.

EDIT: And most of you don't pretend you are going to see it for anything other than the blonde chick.

I'm more than pumped for this movie.

I don't know how this movie managed to pass my eye, but holy shit! I will be seeing this opening night for sure.

how about a read or die movie? ;p

Is it wrong of me to already declare this as movie of the year?

Seriously, I'm drooling for Captain America, but I came at least ten times watching this.

I have no doubt it's going to be a special effects orgy with 5 hot girls kicking @$$ in highly choreographed fight scenes.

And for the record, Jena Malone is hotter than Emily Browning.

They already had an animated movie..............which was better than the series in every way...

xD

Still, not a bad idea.

kinda bothers me that she has full on make up while she's in an insane asylum.

anyways, movie looks cool.

That's funny. I thought the same thing except I called it "Overstimulation: The Movie" and it had Indonesian Jegog and The Go Team blaring all over the soundtrack.
I don't know. If I'm baked enough I can enjoy something wild like that even if the story has all the depth of a Hanna Barbara cartoon.

If there is a helghast in this game or something that looks extremely close to it there may be a possible legal battle with Guerilla Games.

Of course you can just look at wanted.

This movie looks and will be awesome. And rewatchable awesome at that. I will love this film for ever I know it. Like Kill Bill.

Strange that it doesn't have a rating yet, probably still trying to figure out how much dismemberment they can cram into one film.

I saw trailers for this ages ago, it looks so fucking awesome.

Somehow I dont think hollywood would ok a movie in which PODUS wets himself everytime something interesting happens, let alone has the US (and indeed the world) getting there asses pulled out of the fire by the British Library.

If they ever make a Read or Die movie it'll be about an american guy working at the library of congress (special forces division), and it'll suck.

Sucker punch looks like it could be fun, unintelligent, but fun.

"Look at wanted?"
Pardon, I do not follow. Is "Wanted" meant to be a proper noun/title?

I knew Kill Bill was going to work because I knew about Carradine's style. He recalls all of those Martial Arts exploitation films from the 60s and 70s (the Crazy 88 are a direct tribute to Ricky-O, aka, The Story of Ricky). It was material that he knew about and loved, and so did Uma Thurman.

Sucker Punch...I have serious doubts about. This looks like CGI-exploitation at its finest.
Then again, I could be wrong. It's entirely possible that the trailer (like some OTHER trailers in the last year) is a bait-and-switch for a totally different movie.

This truly is turning out to be year of the "fanservice". This movie...cowboys and aliens...that zombie movie they are making...

CGI Exploitation? Very sci fi films aren't CGI exploitation.

Also CGI is Zack Snyder's forte, if there is anyone who can make it look awesome, he can. Just look at 300 or Watchman

...I am so fucking confused by what I just saw.

I want it to be march 25th now! That movie looks freaking awesome!!

I actually really want it to be april 1st as that the uk release *Mumbles* stupid american release dates. */Mumbles*

I wholly disagree. But then not only do I find cake making awesome but also the very air exhaled by a certain Mr Eastwood.

No, this movie looks bad. You are blinded by flashy action sequences. If Transformers can't get away with having nothing but mindless action, then neither can this movie.

Also: Why do all the main characters have porn star names?

thats what I said. Plus I said I was tired of hot chicks doing karate, and hollywood whoring out icons of Bushido to make a few quid.

All in all, I'll still watch the film, I'm just not sure if I'll support it with money or attention just yet.

Am I the only one who thought this was about Sucker Punch, the game studio?

Like, Sucker Punch people dressed as characters from Sly Cooper and Infamous and stopping crime, or something?

That argument would be hypocritical given that the Helghast take a lot of inspiration from the Wolf Brigade from the Kerberos saga

i was originaly just planning on seeing it because emily browning was in it...

...but DAMN, that looks insane!!!!

side note: whhhyyyyy did she dye her hair blonde!? D:

As long as Guerilla Games has distinctive likeness rights they have reasonable grounds to sue.

anyways, movie looks cool.

This is an asylum that somehow functions by throwing the patients in the Matrix and have them fight dragons and gatling samurai. Don't question their cosmetics policy.

Which is completely retarded. They didn't come up with the graphical style for the Helghast, why the fuck should they have any rights to sue anybody ripping of the same stuff as them?

I don't know if this movie's appeal will be widespread enough to be successful. Don't get me wrong, I'll go if just because I love that sepia-infused style.

Because the way that the legal system works is whoever has the rights has the cause. You can think that it's silly all you want. In a court of law it doesn't matter who came up with it first if they weren't quick enough to get the rights.

I'l need more convincing before I waste precious cash on a movie that isn't good...
