Yeah. I'm loving Valve more and more now. Thanks for caring so much. /sarcasm

EDIT: I want to type really nasty words here... really nasty.

Caring so much about what?

Half-Life 2 had a fucking multiplayer component (so did Half-Life I believe), quit your whining.

OT: This could mean anything from, "all games will include co-op and/or multiplayer", to, "Steam will have increased community functions to help share your singlplayer experiences".

People need to stop pissing their pants over a single sentence, that hasn't even been said to us by Valve in the first place.

Im starting to think you would still defend Valve if it was revealed there games are powered by baby seal blood and Gabe eats the brains. Blatant fanboyism.

Making assumptions on the future of the company's games from an indirect quotation. Blatant fuck-face stupidity.

Multiplayer has always been present at Valve.

snfonseka:

whats this mean for half life 3

Multilayer in HL 3

I thought it meant that HL3 would be co-op.

my guess, the next hl will be co-op where one player plays Gordon Freeman, and the other plays Alex Vance
that could end badly though
assuming they say anything about the next one

... What? Oh, that's just lovely.

Fuck you, Valve. Fuck you.

R.I.P. Quality Half Life games...

Regarding your spoiler, that's because:

OT: As others have said, this statement is too vague to draw much from. An official announcement would likely clear up some of the concerns.

Sorry, somehow misinterpreted the statement as saying "No more just single player" IE games would have absolutely no pure single player component left. Mix of having german as ones mother language and the escapist writing the article in a pretty bad way (no offense guys). By the by, its you making assumptions now, where did I deny the fact that multiplayer has been present at valve from the very beginning? Nowhere, I even mentioned fucking TF2, I mean what the fuck.

But, yeah, fuck you and all. My statement still stands. The question is, who is fuck face stupid? The guy who misreads an article once, or the guy who will beg for valve cock no matter what while denying hes gay, so too speak.

Actually thinking about it im probably the stupid guy, while youre just a hypocritical asshole.

Now who wants to bet you will report me for insulting you eh? Would be ironic.

Oh yes, I love Valve cock (do companies only rent one out for the entire company these days?). How dare I point out to two people that they haven't read properly, or simply don't know what they're talking about. How dare I call you stupid for trying to assert my "blatant fanboyism", simply because I pointed out how someone else was wrong. How dare I disagree on the point that, since Valve have pretty much always done multiplayer, claiming they're turning their back on their fans is a stupid fucking idea.

And no, I won't report you. Having an IQ in the triple digits means that I can be called "gay" as an insult (there's a logic to that somewhere I assume) and not be offended.

I don't think people actually get what this means.

It doesn't mean they're not going to make anymore single player stories.

It means they're going to add multiplayer to the experience.

Lets be honest. That's where a games longevity lies. If there's any dev I trust to deliver on both single and multiplayer at the same time, it's valve.

I welcome it.

So what, does that mean in the next Half-Life someone could co-op with you as Alyx Vance?

fenrizz:
And here I was, getting all psyched up for more Portal awesomeness in the years to come.

Apparantly not.

Thanks for nothing Valve

Really? They made two awesome games you really like but now you've heard a second-hand statement that vaguely implies there might not be a sequel to a game you like, therefore they've given you nothing?

The entitlement of some people is baffling. They've provided us with quality titles for years and been incredibly generous with prices and content. So they're going to maybe perhaps try out a little shift in their design philosophy. They've always been about innovation. Stop being such brats.

Meh, sorry, I actually assumed your largely superior IQ would also allow you to grasp the part were I said "so to speak", implying I was using the assfucking example as a parallel, not as an insult or calling you gay. Seems that pretty obvious part went flying past your head as badly as the article went past mine.

Which means, you have know not read my comments properly twice, while calling out people for not reading properly once. Mmmmh.

I dont think you are a blatant fanboy just because of the statements in this thread. I think so because you are all over the forums and have been for years acting like some kind of Escapist Forum defense force/lawyer for Valve defending there every act and fuck up even in the most ridiculous of cases, all the while keeping the same lofty irritating and disagreeable personality that deems it necessary for you to point out your superior intellect and intelligence every other post. Yeah, im no better, but if someone calls me an asshole I will say "Yup, I am, I am not a very agreeable person". While your response is, without one exception, always "Yeah but your IQ is under 100 while mine is not which makes me better than you so take that".

Echo136:
So what, does that mean in the next Half-Life someone could co-op with you as Alyx Vance?

As long as it's not mandatory, I'm down with that. I'd rather -not- have Alyx yell at me in the voice of any of my friends to hurry up and stop exploring the game, interrupting all of the dialogue, and then getting pissy when I tell them to shut the fuck up for a minute, but I appreciate that some people might find sharing the experience with another more meaningful.

Ok, What? They rock at SP, so they decide to stop? What's the logic behind this?

Perhaps they'll try something along the lines of Brink, with a kind of hop-in, hop-out multi-player that lets you advance the story alone or with others?

I doubt Valve is foolish enough to give their biggest consumer-base a middle finger of this magnitude.

Reading some of the comments here, I guess it is possible that this announcement is just being misunderstood as a big "fuck you" to people who like single-player games, when in actual fact it's just an honest indication of a minor deviation from their original market strategy towards a more socially-orientated one, and I will try to keep an open mind about it. Plus, he qualifies it, with a "probably", which is a slight relief.

That said, Keighly did say that this comes from all of Valve, which makes it a pretty official announcement, and companies usually don't issue official announcements without giving them due thought first. Thing is, anyone with two brain cells to rub together can see that an announcement like "Portal 2 will probably be Valve's last game with an isolated single-player experience" is absolutely going to be understood by the majority as a big "fuck you" to single-player gamers.

Therefore, until being informed otherwise, this is the image that I'm going to retain from this comment. And I like to play single-player games.

-267 faith in Valve.

Um... every Valve game so far has had multiplayer of some sort. Except for Portal 1.

I find it funny at how many people are flipping their shit over Valve stating something that they've already started doing since Half Life 2, which is provide multiplayer portions of their games.

Half Life 1 had multiplayer
Half Life 2 had multiplayer

Day of Defeat, Counter-Strike, and Team Fortress are all multiplayer games.

Seriously people, calm the fuck down. They won't be abandoning single player, just including multiplayer in their games, which they've already been doing.

NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

:D

Ummmmm.. Valve. I loved Portal, but don't neglect Half Life, you still have a story unfinished...

could it mean...cooperative gameplay options?!?! (and splitscreen?)

something of which this industry has been horrible about including

So...was this a triumph?
or are we a making a note here: Huge Failure?

If so...I'd be asking what happened to your legs.
Just be happy your still alive.

While this IS a bit of movement on the NOOOOO-o-meter... I trust Valve.

So what this in fact means is that all future Valve games will have multiplayer? Because (if you count CS as the MP component of the Half-Life series) so far as I know they've all featured multiplayer anyway, the only exception being Portal. This is a non-story

For fuck's sake people, stop lossing your shit over one fucking quote from a guy, who heard it from another guy.

Seriously, just fucking chill, people are blowing this whole quote way out of proportion.

This means we get to play coop in Half-Life 3 as Gordon Freeman with a gravity gun and

SmashLovesTitanQuest:
buying L4D2 while complaining about Activision making the same fucking game every year.

What's with hating on L4D2, it's better then L4D1. I've played hours upon hours of both games and L4D2 is much better objectively (more weapons, melee weapons, more gamemodes, more free dlc, more infected types)
You can't compare it to COD or yearly sequels game that activision put out, we haven't reached L4D3 have we.

P.S. Actually what other games is put out annually aside from COD and sports title (Guitar Hero is dead) I couldn't think of any.

The EA Sports games. Madden is the big one.

Isn't this an INHERENTLY bad business plan?

I don't buy muliplayer games and I can't be the only one... surely the single player market is bigger than the multi-player ONLY one?

Ah well.. I guess Valve don't get any more of my money.

Wha-wh-wh-wha-wh-wh-wh-wh-what?! I think I read that wrong. Multiplayer has no place in the Half-Life realm. None. Zip. Zero. Nada. Co-op could only work if the second player takes over Chell (not Alyx because she talks and has scripted events), but that would mean she'd need to be available at the beginning of game, which would totally screw up the story. I'm sorry, but not even the G-Man can get away with magically making her appear. Plus, I feel the Half-Life series is meant to be a single player game.
Okay, I understand that we are seeing wild fires when it's really just a smoldering ember, but still. How did Valve think people were going to react when the STILL haven't even given a hint of the next Half-Life game?

I hope this is either lost in translation somewhere or misinterpreted, and he means that the games will just likely include a multiplayer component but it wont necessarily replace singleplayer. But if he really stated it as "this will likely be the last game with an isolated singleplayer experience." I really dont see that being interpreted any other way than exactly what he said.

If he's right that means their future games will either be completely multiplayer team based/deathmatch stuff like TF2 (which I didnt really like) or coop objective-based stuff like Left4Dead (which I hated)

As someone who loves what Valve are capable of doing but hardly ever enjoys multiplayer, this is the biggest gaming related disappointment I've had in a long time. cue sadface :(

On the other hand, I'm trying to take it with a grain of salt as this doesn't have any kind of official basis.

Yahtzee is gonna be pissed.
seriously why not focus on single playes. I get multiplayer and the fun chaoticness of it all, But It has to be a racing game or fighting or really good shooter for me.

I just think they want to add drop in coop. Or at least I hope so, Valve are the best on story IMO and needs to keep feeding me with good singleplayer stuff.
Any way to get that documentary on PC?

Considering that it's a quote from Valve, I at least think we can we are justified in speculating and considering any truth of the statement.

Your insistance that we 'shut up' is just as bad as the people shouting. Just simply two sides of the same coin.

well since I never play multiplayer I cant say Im happy about this

Meh. I don't care too much tbh. Portal is fantastic, but 2 Portal titles are enough.

I don't care for Half life, though they ought to make episode 3 still so to not displease the vast number of gamers that do.

It isn't though. Multiplayer brings players, why do you think CoD sells and why every game now has to have multiplayer? Plus they usually buy more DLC.

Pointless speculation ahoy!

How I interpret this statement from Valve:

1) Future products featured a hot jump in co-op mode. (Half Life 2: EP 3, or Half Life 3)
2) Future products will contain multiplayer while still having a single player element.
3) Valve is going to launch a purely multiplayer platform that will demand ALL of its human resources and developers (DotA 2 fits this, but I wouldn't rule out an MMO of sorts)
