Portal 2 "Probably" Valve's Single-Player Swan Song

 Pages PREV 1 2 3 4 5 6

Seriously guys, calm down, episode 3 will be primarialy single player, and it will be awsome. This post did get me thinking, maybe Freeman/Alex co-op... who knows?

Valve is right that multiplayer is important, but some games need a strong single player.

Portal needs a single player. Multi player was great, maybe as good or better than single, but multi did not tell a good story.

Half life and counter strike complemented each other perfectly.
Half life deathmatch was pretty silly imo.

JourneyThroughHell:
Oh, no. Not the horrors of multiplayer. Whatever shall we do?

Sober Thal:
Thanks for caring so much. /sarcasm

Caring about what, exactly? Here's a hint. Valve's a business. They "care" about money.

Apparently they started out because they truly wanted to make good games, since the founders' times at Microsoft made them millionaires overnight - they literally had no reason to do anything for money anymore. So, even though Valve does have a huge PR and legal team who's key interest is reimbursing losses and such, the idea that all they want to do is to make good games for customers is... half true.

This sucks.

As someone without a roommate, girlfriend, sibling, or other individual I can play co-op games with on a regular basis, the sentiment that single-player games have somehow become obsolete fills me with rage.

Especially when I consider a dark, dark future where I will have no choice but to play games with people like this:

But I guess nobody cares about people like me. Guess I'll have to find a new hobby.

No official quote or anything?

Jesus you people are incredibly gullible.

Could the E3 delay be because they're making it co-op with Player 1 (host) as Dr. Freeman and Player 2 Alyx?

uppitycracker:
You heard it here first, folks. World of Portalcraft official announcement.

I know you write in jest, but I just got unironic anime eyes at the thought.

I wish they would be clear when making big sweeping stamtents like this

I mean really this could mean anything, like all future games will incorporate some kind of co-op or what ever

but yeah....fuck not what I wanted to hear

valve is now soaring along its jet ski about to jump the shark....all it will take is some official word.

SERIOUSLY hope this is BS. if all they mean is steam connectivity or something minor like that then fine, but if the superjesus of gaming that is valve has fallen into the same narrow-minded idea that single-player games are inherently inferior that plagues the industry....i quit. if valve themselves are being pulled into the "everything must have multiplayer to be marketable" follow the leader bullshit instead of innovating against it as theyve always done.... i'll take up cult movie collection or something, at least that hobby doesnt continually punch me in the balls with disappointing development after disappointing development.

might as well err on the side of caution and start looking for copies of manos the hands of fate i suppose.

Noo, I play almost only singleplayer games, multiplayer is difficult for me to arrange, given that I work long hours and don't have that many friends of XBLA or Steam.

This stories title is highly misleading and the person who wrote it seems to have worded it such just to get more hits and cause unnecessary worry and confusion, shame on you escapist.

All this means is that there is a likelihood that any game now released by valve will have some multiplayer aspect whether that's as far as a multiplayer mode, a co-op mode or something as minimal as a leaderboard, perhaps something new and original no one has thought up; that would be in Valves nature to innovate.

The amount of unnecessary hyperbolic bitching and complaining that some people do is truly astonishing, you'd think Valve had blown up a school or orphanage the way people react to a statement like this. Get over yourselves people; takes things in your stride rather than let practically anything get all uncomfortably crammed up your arse (metaphorically speaking). But then I guess people do use their mouths before their brains so I shouldn't be surprised at all the negative reactions; idiocy is infectious.

Awww but I like being antisocial and playing single player! *sniff*
Hopfully this just means future games will have multiplayer. Not be centred on multiplayer.

This comes from Geoff Keighley? The man whose interview technique consists of a series of "will there be..." and "will it have..." questions, fishing desperately for infromation and reading anything into developer's replies. I wouldn't take it too seriously.

This is not information, it is speculation.

isn't this still all SPECULATION?

They are 'still' working on Episode 3...hard to type and keep a straight face. XD

DTWolfwood:

Of course they are still working 'on' Episode 3. They put all the design documents and scripts under the carpet years ago.

I have lost any and all interest for Valve and what ever they produce.
Might remember them again when they roll around with Half-Life 3. But probably not before that

NO. BAD. VALVE, NO.
Excellent single player stories are why you are famous. Do not jump on the multiplayer bandwagon, because focusing on something that is not the story diminishes the value of your games.

Sober Thal:
cough cough

Yeah. I'm loving Valve more and more now. Thanks for caring so much. /sarcasm

EDIT: I want to type really nasty words here... really nasty.

You not so crazy about this multiplayer take over either? I thought I was alone.

Tom Goldman:
"Portal 2 will probably be Valve's last game with an isolated single-player experience."

You sure this might not be out of context. Could it be they meant "isolated" as in no other humanoid characters to interact with? Isolated as in a character trapped in an environment where they are alone?

to be fair however I think that any game Valve makes will be good....just multiplayer and therefore not really for me unfortunatley

though lets face it this article is so vauge it could mean pretty much anything I mean some games that have co-op doesnt mean NOT using co-op or the like ruins the experience (well there was borderlands which could have been a great game if they didnt make it tedious to play single player)

my biggests worry is that eather way Ill have to be conected to the internet to play....NOT cool valve....NOT cool (learn anything from Ubisoft?)

hmmm I doubt it "isolated without other epople" isnt exactly a big theme...well you do spend alot of time in Half life alone

but my point is its like saying "we wont be making any games whre your charachter is alone all the time" I mean that doesnt make much sense

Im guess co-op is going to be a big thing

for the single player crowd thats not always a game killer, take saints row 2 for example

then theres borderlands...great game if only it wasnt dull for SP

I mean I see them going down a left 4 dead route I guess

My thoughts are the quote is referring that it might be the last Portal title Valve creates with an isolated character single player experience. Time will tell on who is right. I won't buy another Valve title if my only option to play is with 12 year old ear-rapists. It would seem odd to me that a company would close the door on a gaming type that put them on the map. It's sort of like Ferrari saying they aren't going to build anymore sports cars.

but really this article isnt worth taking seriously at all

its obviously done for shcok purposes (the title) and its soo friggen vauge Im not even sure what they are talking about..it could mean ALOT of things

I haven't played Half-life and I've not got Portal 2 yet but maybe since its in the same world the 3rd game for both will be combined! Like GLaDOS was training her up to take down the baddies with that Gordon bloke!

People need to just calm down. He said Portal 2 was the last gane with an isolated singleplayer experience meaning that all their future games will probably have some sort of multiplayer component instead of making a seperate multiplayer game *cough* Half Life 2: Deathmatch *cough*. Portal 2 had multiplayer so there might be another Portal game but honestly? Where does Portal go from here?

Double Post *edit*

I'd play that. I'd seriously play that...

I'm rather disappointed by this... It really makes me wonder what they'll do with the Half Life franchise from here. They can't really make it a co-op only affair.

Now considerably confused. Thanks again Valve.

Left 4 dead?

Okay, I can only guess what you mean there...
If you meant that they made Left 4 Dead, which is a co-op game, so why couldn't they do that to Half Life?...

Well, then it wouldn't really be Half Life. While Valve could probably make co-op work in Half Life, they couldn't make it a co-op ONLY. A game like that needs a single player option.

I dont think you are a blatant fanboy just because of the statements in this thread. I think so because you are all over the forums and have been for years acting like some kind of Escapist Forum defense force/lawyer for Valve defending there every act and fuck up even in the most ridiculous of cases, all the while keeping the same lofty irritating and disagreeable personality that deems it necessary for you to point out your superior intellect and intelligence every other post. Yeah, im no better, but if someone calls me an asshole I will say "Yup, I am, I am not a very agreeable person". While your response is, without one exception, always "Yeah but your IQ is under 100 while mine is not which makes me better than you so take that".

and ignoring his point about multiplayer modes being prevalent in all valve's past titles.

SmashLovesTitanQuest:

Woodsey:

Caring so much about what?

Half-Life 2 had a fucking multiplayer component (so did Half-Life I believe), quit your whining.

OT: This could mean anything from, "all games will include co-op and/or multiplayer", to, "Steam will have increased community functions to help share your singlplayer experiences".

People need to stop pissing their pants over a single sentence, that hasn't even been said to us by Valve in the first place.

Im starting to think you would still defend Valve if it was revealed there games are powered by baby seal blood and Gabe eats the brains. Blatant fanboyism.

Anyway, this sure sucks. Valve has been very, very slowly giving there "old" fanbase the finger for a while now. I dont really care that much about all the small disagreeable things Valve has been doing lately but they all come together to form one massive cock that is lodging itself firmly in our asses. A process some people even seem to enjoy, because Valve can do no fucking wrong. They will take it up the ass like an absolute champ, buying L4D2 while complaining about Activision making the same fucking game every year. They will complain about DLC packs while playing a game that has been gradually changed from an online FPS to a fucking marketplace for hats and trading items.

Dont misunderstand me, I am aware of the fact that Valve are a company and companies exist to make money but im just slightly disappointed that they are taking the direction pretty much everyone doesnt want to go. Kinda thought they wouldnt for a while. Mh.

Its getting to the point where *BLASPHEMY INCOMING* I almost hope the Half Life series is given to another studio, Duke Nukem style. I can wait for the game for 6 years but if it comes out and it has some kind of bullshit demon souls style singlemultiplayer hybrid.... Well... FUCK THAT.

There you go. You can read that post again. Properly. Done that? Good. Now, you may have noticed that I mentioned Left 4 Dead in that post. And you may have noticed I mentioned Team Fortress 2 as well. Thats 2 online games. I dont see how I ignored the fact that valve has been doing multiplayer for a long time. In fact, I went out of my to mention multiplayer games by valve twice after that too. Im not ignoring things in anybodys post. You are ignoring things in mine.

All the other points of "attack" do come from posts he made in the past, in which, along with other things, he did mention that he hated COD for lack of innovation more than once while defending Valve for making the same game 2 or 3 times on the same day. I have seen a number of people mildly call him out on stuff like this, and he responded to everyone the same way. Ignore all points made, state arguments which have already been proven false, and insult the other guys IQ. He displays an extremely disagreeable personality 90% of the time, dismissing peoples arguments without caring to say why or explaining himself properly. Almost all of his posts made on non-valve threads are negative and flame users who politely stated there opinions which the majority of the time werent even replying to him. And I think that this thread is as good a one to call him out on it than any other.

Dont get me wrong, im certainly not the nicest guy on the internet. But this guy? 11.000 posts made up of "shut up. you suck. im better than you. im going to pretend I dont care too look cool. dont talk shit about valve." "sorry I disagree and here is why..." "BE QUIET IM MORE INTELLIGENT THAN YOU I CANT HEAR YOU NANANANANANANANA". I come across as quite immature most of the time due to my language but this guy is acting truly childish.

Okay, I'll say that kind of behavior could be called out on (His not yours). However, I was just saying that your argument that he is a fanboy (because he was telling another guy that valve and multiplayer are basically synonymous nowadays) was kinda invalid, and that you were more attacking him than his point. Although I probably would do the same in your position.

This just means they will add multiplayer in their future games.

Hopefully they'll take extra time to make the multiplayer instead of taking the time out of making the single player.

Does it really take long enough to create multiplayer after creating the game to m ake us worried about delayed releases?
