Catherine Special Edition Includes Underwear, Pizza Box

Atlus' bizarrely intriguing Catherine is getting an equally bizarrely intriguing special edition.

Many gamers don't know what to make of Atlus' upcoming Catherine. On the one hand, it's an adult-aimed game about sexuality and personal relationships from the studio that brought us genuinely mature gems like Persona 4. On the other, it's flippin' weird.

We do now know, however, that the game will have an appropriately weird collectors' edition. According to Atlus, gamers who buy the "Love is Over" deluxe edition version of the game ($79.99 MSRP) will receive the following:

-Protagonist Vincent's polka-dot boxers that he wears in the dream sequences (Men's Large).
-Vincent's "Empty Hearts" videogame-themed shirt, worn by Catherine in cutscenes (Men's Large).
-The game Catherine, for Xbox 360 or PS3 (Duh).
-A standard-sized pillowcase featuring Catherine in lingerie.
-A pizza box from the "Stray Sheep," the bar frequented by Vincent and his friends. Sadly, it does not include the pizza.

Yeah, we did warn it was kind of weird, didn't we?

While Atlus warned that this special edition would be in very limited supply, it also said that people who wanted goodies could just go ahead and preorder any version of the game, whether regular or deluxe. People who preorder Catherine will get an art book and the game's soundtrack as part of the aptly named "Sound Disc & Art Book" pack.

I'm not sure about this one, Atlus. Can you guarantee that if we go to sleep wearing Vincent's boxers we won't wake up in a nightmarish reality where we need to climb a box tower in order to survive? If you can't, no sale.

Catherine hits North America on July 26th. Mark your calendars for weirdness, folks.

I burst into laughter when I saw the boxers. I don't know why I burst into laughter when I saw the boxers.

Odd.

Ehh...$20 extra?

I'll spring for it, I suppose

Just to support Atlus more. And the pizza box will make AWESOME storage, I suppose.

Sadly, the clothes won't fit me. >_>

Couldn't it at least include a redeemable coupon for pizza?

How can a country with prostitutes and pornography still find a market for these products? Is there a shortage of women in Japan? What the hell?

I know as soon as some people hear the word Catherine and underwear, they are gonna pre-order immediately without even checking the contents of the Special Edition.

I know what I want for my birthday... (or I'd get it myself and save myself the awkward looks this game and/or the special edition would get me)

The T-shirt is nice, but the rest of those are.. kind of weird. Even for me. Would prefer the CD + artbook version.

Of course, Amazon doesn't want to ship either one to me. VGP does, nevermind.

This is just so odd that I'm very inclined to buy it (which was probably their plan all along), but since I'm very broke and since my 360 has almost no storage space left, it looks like I'll have to pass.

Capatcha: correct thishick
That's harsh Escapist. Sure I have a bit of a southern accent due to my redneck parrents, but that's just mean. I don't have any hick ticks that need a fixin'!

No pizza, no sale.

Also, this new Captcha (or however it's spelled) thing is a pain in the ass

I'll probably just stick to the regular pre-order. Art book and soundtrack are good enough for me

I think this one just removed Record of Agarest War from the top. Wow...

I'm all for weird and unusual stuff, but that's just too weird for me. The hell am I gonna do with a pizza box that doesn't have a pizza in it?

I'm just gonna stick with with the regular pre-order thank you.

I don't even have a PS3 and I want this...

More importantly is it for everywhere or just North America?

I'm pre-ordering this today

Those are not heart-patterned boxers. They are polka-dotted. I am disappoint, Atlus.

Those are clearly dots on the boxers and not hearts.

The deluxe "love is over" version is only being offered on Amazon, which is saying: "Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S. and to APO/FPO addresses. For APO/FPO shipments, please check with the manufacturer regarding warranty and support issues."

Gamestop and VGP should ship the artbook and CD version internationally, from what I can tell.

I would order it right now, but I'm waiting for my new card after the PSN breach..

I don't think "nightmare" is the right word for the kind of dreams Catherine will be giving me ;)
Is the lingerie made of wool?

Boxers and pizza? Sounds like a good night in.

....Umm, they are going to give me undergarments and an empty pizza box for the special edition? This has "What is this I don't even" written all over it.

God dammit.

No. Just... No.

Any previous notions toward maturity I was willing to give this game are gone. It's a glorified porn game, dammit, with a backstory and some platforming sections. Sorry, people, until it proves me wrong I'm stuck with that. This is slightly distasteful...

And no, I haven't played Persona but Persona never pulled shit like this that I know of.

Ummmmm... what? Okay, this is really, really, weird...

And yet, I would find myself buyiong this. Provided it was the same in the UK release, assuming there is one. Not because of the pillowcase, or the boxers, but purely because I WANT THAT T-SHIRT!!!!! Except I'm a men's medium, so the t-shirt would be too big for me. Oh well, I could always just deliberately shrink it in the wash once or something...

Um...why does the shirt have to be a large? What are you trying to say Atlus?

That seems a little harsh, though I heard those words when Bayonetta came out.

OT: This looks... interesting.

Odd.

Well I thought at first that it was woman's underwear and then I laughed my ass off when I saw the boxers. Could be the same thing

Question: Why does it seem to me that if they included woman's underwear (not a thong or g-string or nothing, but regular underwear), people would raise this huge ruckus over it? Is it just cause Boxers have become a lot more unisex, or is it something else?

I was really expecting a different type of underwear.

I really don't see why people are weirded out.
It's merchandise from the game and very appropriate. And also freaking awesome.
Sure.. underwear.. it's the same as getting some other piece of merch. You don't have to wear it, you just love it and hate your self for spending ~$80 on a pair of new undies that are too large for you. I'm not projecting.

Me too! Because nothing says "creepy sex-themed video game from Japan" like a game that comes with panties.

I think I'll skip on that, even if VGP manage to get a hold of some copys. As much as Catherine looks awesome, I don't really need any more underwear or pillow cases. :P Soundtrack and artbook will do me fine.

Yeah! These pornographic boxer shorts. Wait, no, this salacious pizza box! Wait, no, this lascivious T-shirt.

Actually, I don't get them. The bonuses (not really my thing, will stick to the CD and artbook thank you very much) or your opinion. How does this have anything to do with porn? The only one I'll give you is the pillowcase, which is an odd thing to see in the West, granted, but on what merit can you call this a porn game?

The game is rated "C" by CERO which not only by definition means it's not pornography (CERO doesn't rate porn), but also that it's on the same rating as Record of Agarest War, a game that got a Teen rating from the ESRB and a 12 from ye olde PEGI.

I'm not saying Catherine will necessarily get that rating. The ESRB will probably give it an MA anyway (although Teen wouldn't surprise me much either), and PEGI may well follow suit with a 16, but that still doesn't explain your conclusion.

In what universe does any of this translate to "glorified porn game"?

How big is the pizza box? That just seems like it would be awkward to receive in the mail.

Buyer: Oh hey, my PS3/Xbox360 game just game in the mail
Anyone buyer lives with: Why the hell is it in such a big box?
Buyer: Oh you know, empty pizza boxes and love pillows.

"Stray Sheep"? So that's what the sheep men come from.

Ok! Time to waste $80 on another SE...do not dissapoint me like EA did with Dead Space 2's Collector's Edition, Atlus...or there will be hell to pay
P.S.

I already wanted this game damnit!
