Rumor: Sony Unveiling NGP as PS Vita

image

The official name of Sony's PSP successor may have been leaked prior to E3 2011.

When Sony first announced the successor to the PSP, it didn't have an official name. Sony referred to what the world previously called the PSP2 as the "NGP." With E3 2011 just a hop, skip, and trip and fall away, a rumor may have revealed the system's official name before Sony planned to do so at the event.

An anonymous source may have told GamesPundit that the NGP will be called the PS Vita. "Our source tells us that this will be the definite and final name of the new system Sony will bring out at the end of 2011," the site writes.

Following this post, the Mega Rock Blog posted up a couple of images of unconfirmed Sony documentation on the PS Vita. They show the PS Vita logo on the handheld, but could easily be fabrications. Strangely, the Mega Rock post was removed and replaced with one that says: "A stupid mistake. This has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever done." The blog also appears to be inaccessible as of this writing, so take that as you will.

In Italian, vita means "life." Vita is also said to have been a codename for the PSP2/NGP before its announcement. In my opinion, the name doesn't roll off the tongue very well, but that seems to be the case with most new products until you get used to their names. The Nintendo Wii sounds perfectly normal now, though it certainly didn't when it was announced.

In any case, we may find out the truth about the NGP's final name at E3 2011, which runs from June 7-9.

Vita huh?

Is it is going to be buggy, universally crappier than its predecessor and have outrageous system requirements?

I may be wrong, but if the name is supposed to be italian than wouldnt it be pronounced "vai-ta"?

Either way i genuinely hope they just go with PSP2.

Are you sure you know what youre talking about there? This is about the PSP2/NGP, not the PC version of Black Ops.

It doesn't really go well if you abbreviate the name to PSV. It sounds kinda dodgy.

...Thats a stupid name, I'll be honest.

Why not just go with the usual way of things and go with PSP2?

OH Snap!

Lets just hope this lives up to its hype(i still enjoy my psp).

I think that name sucks.

TOO CLOSE TO VISTA FOR COMFORT!!

I'll wait for the next one. Psp7. :p

PS... Vita?

I guess I've heard weirder.

Seems pretty redundant when you know it'll receive an upgrade in around 5 years.

Yeah, I'm not a fan. It just sounds too much like healthy yoghurt drink rather than an all singing all dancing fancy handheld.
If you heard "Have you got the Vita?" and didn't know about it, I'd be willing to bet your first thought wasn't "PlayStation related product"

"What you doing man?"
"Just playing my Vita."
"What the hell is that some kind of foot massager?"

It's not too late to change that awful name Sony. How about: PSP Jupiter? (I was looking at a poster of planets).

I'm going to get the device either way, but it would be nice if they had a more reasonable name

I'm really starting to dislike all these rumours, I don't want any spoilers!!
That said, I don't think this is real. I mean, that's a horrible name. Even if it is real, I hope they change it because of this leak.

You know what sucks? Leaks. Fuck leaks. Companies release things when they plan on it for a reason. Why can't we just get announcement?

I think he means it sounds like, or is vista.

OT: I honestly believe that that is an AWFUL NAME!!!!

I hope it's psp2. I mean, they could totally make this as big a hit as the ps2 was for sony... those 2's could just do well for them :D

PSP Vita sounds fucking terrible. NGP suits it so much better, even if that's a codename.

Removing an S makes a lot of difference, dude.

Like in the sentence "I will bring laughter to the people".

Sounds pretty crappy, to say the least.

Lets just call it a PSV and be done with it

I can live with that name. That said- I WANT!

Damn .. Is it a gaming System or a $50 bottle of mineral water...oh well might as well be called the PSP Vidal Sasoon for all i care.

Still think PSP DOA is a better title..

It was a Windows Vista joke. It seems that I'm not the only one who noticed the far too close for comfort similarity between "Vista" and "Vita".

And beyond that, it's one failure of a name anyway. Is "Playstation Portable 2" really that hard to figure out, Sony? You already figured it out for the regular Playstations. Why would you go and give PSP2 some weird name like Vita? This is one rumor I hope ends up being bogus.

PSV sounds OK to me, I think the general name of a console (PS3,360,Wii,PSP,DS) needs to be 3 syllables or less to roll off the tongue.

Or, you know, you have a shortlist of names you could name your next big product, you can't decide, so you "leak" the information, see what kind of feedback you get. People don't like the name? Good, thank god you didn't make that mess with the official announcement. :)

I don't like Vita. I got used to Kinect and Wii, but i still hate saying Windows Vista. Sounds kinda ... odd. PS Vita, now with extra almonds and antioxidants!

And the only thing I can think of is a certain small, red-haired, tsundere magical girl with a hammer >.>

Oh well, in a way, I hope they go with it. The fanart alone will be awesome >.>

How do you know that's not an Italian ad and it's really the PSP Life?

Hey look! Duel-analog sticks!!

My interest has been grabbed. I'll wait until about 6 months after release to hear about battery life and, frequency of firmware updates though before making a buying decision. I can't wait to see the launch lineup but more importantly, see what format they come on. UMD, flash cards, other disk...I can't wait for more info.

John Funk:

To be honest, that actually kind of makes it seem... awesome...

PSV... It's a Nut... You can play. *Ding*

OT: I honestly don't care. I've always been more of a Nintendo Man myself, and I already have a 3DS and am patiently waiting for the Project Cafe.

HA! that was great, I tip my hat to you sir.

Anyway, I would be cool with Vita, it may need a bit of time to grow on me, but I wouldn't mind the name.

Ergh, will they just decide on a name already!

Ugh, I'm not really liking that name, but it's sure as hell a lot better than NGP, sounds like a terrible rap song to me.

Whatever, I'm still getting it, and I will wait until E3 to find out what the name really is.

Also, leaks suck.

LightspeedJack:

because naming systems after planets worked so well for SEGA *SEGA Saturn if you needed a reminder*

OT:as is with all leaks the company puts out "maybe" fabricated information to see consumer reactions and depending on the reception works out it's PR speech about said leak. And while the abbreviation is crap Vita might be a good name for a hand held

PSV? Hmm...
Looks like a sweet handheld. Lets see some launch titles. I'm liking the dual sticks, makes FPS and TPS games a go for the system.
