2K Teases XCOM with Citizen Skywatch ARG

image

A retro website asking citizens to watch the skies is the latest viral marketing campaign for the sci-fi shooter XCOM.

Marketers have a harder time getting consumers to care about their products these days. Boo hoo, I know, but in order to fight through the noise, nerd-centric products like games and movies often try to come up with a meta ARG or bombard the endemic press with gimmicks a la the Dante's Inferno campaign. It seems that 2K Games is slowly rolling out something like the former with a Twitter feed, a Facebook page and a website devoted to "Citizen Skywatch." The only problem is that casual observers can be clueless as to what this campaign is actually promoting. The Escapist just received a press release that mentions the "Citizen Skywatch Alternate Reality Game for XCOM" however that seems to point to the sci-fi shooter reboot of the classic turn-based strategy game. More details will be surfacing in the days leading up to PAX Prime.

A few days ago, the web address http://www.citizenskywatch.com began showing a blog featuring entries from someone called "Citizen One." The website warns of an invasion coming from the skies and urges all readers to maintain vigilance.

ATTENTION CITIZEN SOLDIERS:

THE INVASION HAS BEGUN.

OUR SKIES ARE FILLED WITH THE SHADOWS OF AN ENEMY UNKNOWN: ITS ORIGIN IMPENETRABLE, ITS PURPOSE INSCRUTABLE, ITS METHODS -- INCREDIBLE.

The "Citizen Skywatch Teletype" - otherwise known as a Twitter feed set up by the marketers - went live two days ago and a Facebook page also now states that the Citizen Skywatch was founded in August 1960. The location is listed as: "We are everywhere."

The campaign hints at a larger movement, perhaps with gameplay elements similar to the I Love Bees alternate reality game that promoted Halo 2 or the more recent Portal 2 images leaked by Valve earlier this year. But other than the standard marketing pieces listed above, this ARG feels a little sparse - at least right now. More information will be forthcoming at PAX Prime, as the release promises that some forum goers will be able to converse with Citizen One himself.

"Attendees at PAX will be able to step into Citizen One's Seattle bunker as he recruits new agents into Citizen SkyWatch to expose the government's attempts to cover up the unknown threat invading our skies," says 2K Games.

While that sounds interesting - as long as they get a skilled actor to play the role, I vote for Sean Connery - it must be a bit frustrating for the marketing team for the Citizen Skywatch Facebook page to be plastered with comments begging for different games than the one it's meant to promote. "GTA V? Please R*!" one commenter laments.

In before the 'OMG XCOM iz difirent!!!!!' hate.

Weird promo stuff never impresses me. I want the game because of the tactical and rpg play, not some odd internet sites.

"Citizen One"?

Man, that guy must hate Gordon.

Hurr hurr.

Doubt there's going to be much tactical or RPG play in this shooter. Fail ARG for a fail game will fail. With any luck.

Well fuck,Facebook people are fucking stupid,IT IS NOT GTA V AT ALL,WHY CAN YOU NOT NOTICE THAT!?

Your doubts are unfounded. That or all of the interviews with the devs at the last E3 were a lie. Time units, alien research, the 'tactical mode' have been in development for over a year. A lot of people are just blinded with rage over it not being a remake of the first couple of games in the series.

EDIT: They specifically say you can't play this game as a run and gun shooter too.

Time units will just be another version of MP or SP or VATS points from fallout.. a currency to use for special abilitys... nothing new there. Researching? From what i gathered you either sacrifice alien artifacts to further some yet unknown research projects (most likely simple upgrades for your henchmen) or keep them for usage. But the thing is in xcom you researched stuff to use it.. not use it while its being researched. Also "tactical mode" ? Again, its an action FPS... it wont be a ghost recon or SWAT game with aliens. Pointing your finger at some chest high walls and tell your two henchmen to go over there is hardly being tactical.

The only way that any tactics would play in is if the levels themselves are open.. wich i doubt since the game looked to be heavily scripted from what they have shown. Theres only so much "tactic" you can put into a run n gun FPS

Dont get me wrong.. the game itselfe might be highly enjoyable... but it simply doesnt deserve the title X-com. It deserves a different new title because it is infact an entirely new game with no ties whatsoever to the old games.

EDIT: So they say its not a gun n run.. but what they have shown so far looks pretty much like a gun n run... DEVs say alot of things to apese fandoms only to back out in the last minute or say that they where "misinterpreted" by people. I rather believe my own eyes over something a Dev said, got burned way to often the last couple of years.

Perhaps using the name relevant to the gameplay might be more appropriate instead of the usual name whoring.

As a HUGE Xcom fan

I expect this to be a huge steaming pile of crap and a cheep nasty cash in

I FULLY expect to be vindicated when they deliver the above or a nasty bastardization that strategy fans hate as its a tarted up Run n Gun and FPS fans hate as it's a fiddly and non explosive shooter....in affect by trying to do both they feck up completely

If however they don't then bully for them, I still think this is a dumb ass fuckwit thing to so with a fantastic brand name and for reallllllly dumb ass fuckwit reasons

Of course, if they advertise hard enough the dumbshit 360 crowed will buy enough of it to make bank anyway, thus successfully murdering another franchise.

And why do you have to call people names? That's rude and uncalled for.

The failure will fail. The majority of consumers have even less respect for older IPs than those rebooting it.

That and then there was Fallout 3, which did the exact same thing and managed to get that "Game of The Year" award.

But you know, no one cares about that.

The reason the whole 'I love bees' thing worked is because people actually WANTED to play the next Halo. It won't work for a game that, instead of having a lot of hype already, if overall one of the most hated reboots in recent memory. I can't imagine anyone actually being psyched for this ARG. Or the game itself, for that matter.

And Fallout 3 was a near complete failure, a bunch of set pieces of random quality set into a giant empty pile of dirt and rusted metal, with no attempt at a connected setting or proper relation to lore or continuity. But it led to New Vegas, which is essentially the true Fallout 3, so there's that.

Well Apocalypse was alright, though Terror of the Deep was godawful. At least those were strategy titles and not something completely unrelated.

And I'm saying that because that's who this is marketed to: not Xcom fans, but idiot console owners who have no idea what Xcom is and just buy what shows up on TV.

Let me see, where did I put that.... Oh right, here it is.

There's only a few people who would disagree with you there.

if this game didnt call itself xcom I might be willing to give it a shot but since it insists on calling itself xcom and having nothing to do with xcom, fuck it

I'm fairly certain I don't want to have anything to do with this game. Despite other people's opinions, after having watched the same E3 reports and Q&A sessions with the devs, I did not come away feeling hopeful.

Ultimately, if the game is good, I probably will get it. I'm just saying, chances are that it won't be. Otherwise - why abandon the strategy aspect of the game so obviously for twitch gameplay?

Also, what's up with the balls on developers these days? They have shrunk faster than the average IQ score. X-COM is the perfect franchise for a RTS title (Apocolypse was technically one, even though it still had optional turn based play) yet developers and publishers have pretty much abandoned the genre to Blizzard, who mind you, are more than happy to rake in sqazillions of dollars with StarCraft II.

I was really looking forward to buying this, but now....

This game will have (and this is what 2K said):

-No Base Building
-No Base Control
-No Tanks to send into battle
-No Research (they have something called "Research points", which is just another way of saying "experience points", and it kind of works just like FFX's Sphere Grid)
-No Manufacturing
-No Random Missions
-No UFO to shoot down
-No more then two men/NPCs to command, but they can never die
-No Nations/City to protect
-No Micromanaging of any kind
-No real Strategy of any kind
-Nothing, and I mean *NOTHING* from the first 3 games to connect it to X-COM
-NO homage beyond ONE or TWO names.

I'm not joking when I say Enforcer had more homages and references then this game! it's like they never wanted to make an X-COM game in the first place. :(

You know what the really bad part is? This game is all about Gays and civil rights! No, I, am, not, joking.

I'll say it again: THIS GAME IS NOT ABOUT ALIENS; IT'S ABOUT GAYs AND BLACKS RIGHTS IN THE 60s! this is the only reason why it takes place in the 60s, and is set in the USA only.

There is even a Gay scientist who is a Black Hole Sue, and is (in Jordan Thomas own words) "one of the best scientists in the world"

Except was this done by a well founded reputation? There is NO hype for this, and its met with rage from all sides of the spectrum. Bethesda had the resources to pull it off, 2K does not. For the market, its just another generic alien shooter. Faceless, with no redeeming qualities.

By the way, GOTYs are useless now. It may have meant something 10 to 20 years ago, but GOTYs are given out like candy by hundreds of publications. Only 2 GOTYs matter, which are from two academies. Fallout 3 has not gotten a GOTY from either.

A tactical shooter set in 1950s/60s with a rather well designed enemy from what I've seen? Looks pretty promising.

The only reason it's getting hate is because it's not true to the extremely outdated game that was made over ten years ago. It's getting hate because of it's name, pure and simple.

Says who? You?

I trust my sources until I have a reason not too. I have yet to see a legitimate gaming website give out an award like that to a game that hasn't deserved it, or at least wasn't a bad game by any stretch of the imagination.

Its getting hate because its another Bioshock, except with a boring black blob for an enemy. That is lazy enemy design.

If you actually look at how long these publications gave out GOTYs, most of these publications popped up around 2005 to 2009. To trust a GOTY now is to trust a college degree without asking where its from. The more you research GOTYs and how they are given, along with how the gaming industry stands now, the less you trust them.

"well designed enemy"??? Have you seem the 2011 Trailer?

The 'aliens' are nothing more then re-skined humans and turrets, and the big black ring is a joke that also feels like a turret.

The more you speak the more obvious it is you know nothing about Xcom (or Fallout for that matter, but that's an argument for elsewhere). These enemies have nothing to do with the actual Xcom enemies, that would actually be pretty cool, but would require being set much further in the future and having more than 3 enemy designs.

By having gameplay that is exactly the same, and adding these features in response to complaints that the game had nothing to do with tactics. The three man squads, the special powers, the upgrade system, it's all Mass Effect.

Why yes that's exactly why people hate it. It claims it is Xcom when it is not, in fact, Xcom at all.

If they'd called it Xenophobia Rebirth or Alien Shooter #32, I'd give it a chance. But with Xcom as its name, sorry I'm not fooled.

Why is it so hard to just recreate the original XCom with better graphics and a more streamlined interface?

Alas, I'm afraid that no longer interests the gamers of today.

Roll in the next wave of shooters.

I never, not once, claimed to know anything about Xcom, the games from 10 years ago. And explain to me what exactly I don't know about Fallout. That it wasn't always a first person shooter?

I do know what types of games these are.

What I am saying, is that I know something about this game. And that the sheer stupidity of the masses of gamers spewing out hatred for a game that may in fact have a tremendous amount of potential Because of what it's named.

By having gameplay that is exactly the same, and adding these features in response to complaints that the game had nothing to do with tactics. The three man squads, the special powers, the upgrade system, it's all Mass Effect

So... 3 man squads is now Mass Effects' thing? That was really so ground breaking and original by the devs at Bioware, that warrants that they copied them? Next thing you're gonna tell me is that they stole a crouching button from Halo.

No, this right here is not a valid "they copied them" complaint. The simple fact that it's a first person shooter makes this argument completely moot.

Why yes that's exactly why people hate it. It claims it is Xcom when it is not, in fact, Xcom at all.

I'd hate to repeat myself, so I will rephrase.

Fucking listen to yourself.

You hate the game because of the name. The name of a game people stopped playing 10 years ago. A game that's mechanics are so outdated that the majority of gamers don't even know what the genre is called anymore.

And there's a good reason for that, believe me.

No we hate it becuase its a shitty cash in to the shooter market and they've admitted as much - they are coping mass affect, becuase it sold

They're tacking on a name - to try and cash in which is pissing the fans off.

Seriously call it Alien Attack or something else and I'd go 'Meh another shooter' call it Xcom and I want something that true to the spirit of Xcom

It was a fantastic game which I've sunk more hours in then I care to admit, I've completed xcom enemy unknown probably 100's of times - Terror from the deep dozens, Apocalypse fully maybe 1/2 a dozen and Interceptor maybe only once.

See Interceptor was a space combat game BUT

I had base building
I had research
I had a plot threatning to destroy earth
There was micro maangment, handling relations etc

It was an Xcom game....by least fav as I sucked at it

THIS IS NOT XCOM

Make a haloville game where mastercheif grows feckin' space turnips and it's about as close as this gets.....
