PC Battlefield 3 Lacks Key FPS Feature

EA thumbs its nose at the PC by restricting in-game server browsing to consoles in its upcoming shooter.

In-game server browsers have been a mainstay of PC first-person shooter games for many years, so it was only logical to expect the upcoming Battlefield 3 to use them as well. That expectation turned out to be incorrect. While the next installment in the hit Battlefield series will allow console players to seek out new games from within the game itself, PC users will be required to exit the game, find a new server with an Internet browser, and then restart it.

Alan Kertz, a game designer with Battlefield 3 developer DICE, confirmed the news earlier today via Twitter. DICE announced only yesterday that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game would get an in-game browser for multiplayer servers. According to Kertz, PC gamers will have to use the browser-based Battlelog service instead.

While Kertz stated that the game "starts up REAL fast," fan blog Battlefield3Blog points out that Battlefield 3 will be the only PC shooter in recent memory to eschew the use of an in-game browser.

When developing the same game for different consoles, it's reasonable to expect a few minor differences between versions. However, EA is risking PC gamers' ire by removing one of the features they've come to expect from almost every other FPS on the market. Both console and PC gamers can see how the in-game server vs. Battlelog debate plays out firsthand when the game arrives on October 25, 2011.

Brilliant. As I said before on other forums, every trailer makes me want it, every announcement makes me want to castrate the people who thought whatever the hell they've announced was a good idea.

What in the hell made DICE think that was a good idea!? Seriously, that's not even a bullshit marketing ploy, it's just insane.

In the alpha the battle log system worked great and is actually much better than the rather awful
bfbc2 in game browser.

Edit: game really does start up fast like 5 seconds less time than the bfbc2 broswer spent time wasting when you tried to join a server.

Really? Thats just stupid. Doesnt matter that your game "starts up REAL fast" its crazy to expect pcs to quit, select a new server, start the game, and repeat when the server ends up being crap.

Is this supposed to make sense? I dont get it.

EDIT: If they want to do this shit than remove all those Nvidia, EA, Dice intros that appear at the beggining of the game, Im not going to keep pressing Esc multiple times just to join a server (that then may have lag meaning that IŽll have to quit the game)

*slow-clap*
Well done EA, well done.
I know consoles are a lucrative market and all, but have you stopped trying to get money out of the PC gaming crowd?
They offer you money, you decline and slap them with your genitals.

Good thing i'm getting this on console i suppose.

I smell another "THEY DIDN'T LET US HAVE DEDICATED SERVERS SO LET''S SHIT ALL OVER THE FLOOR IN PROTEST!!!1!!!!" event happening again

"Starts up REAL fast", when your Gulftown i7 is hooked up to a DeLorean's turbocharger.

Seriously, not cool.

The most insane part of this is that the console versions *HAVE* this, I mean... that means they either put in dev time just for the consoles or took it out of the PC version... which idiot thought this was a good idea?

For the record: I have never planned on buying this game. This is just insane anyway.

I don't give a flying fuck how fast the game boots up. They've deliberately made the game less convenient to use. I was on the fence about this game from the start, but this definitely won't increase my odds of getting it. What reason could they possibly have for doing something so bizarre?

But why would they want to do that?

I wasn't really interested in this to begin with, and now all thoughts of even picking it up at a later date when the price has dropped are gone. I won't be buying this regardless of how good it is as a game.

Who decided that this was a good idea?
I wanted to believe that Battlefield 3 would be the cod killer, but it's spending it's time not taking shots a cod, and more time shooting itself in the foot.

Ok, no. This is just too stupid to be real.

The fact that I have to EXIT THE GAME to choose a server, then start it again to play is just fucking stupid. No, stupid isn't the right word... this is a whole new realm of stupidity.

I mean, really, there is no good reason for this.

And I don't fucking care if the game starts up "REAL fast", it would be faster to simply browse servers in-game, and select them that way.

And if this Battlelog thing is really that damn important to you and the game, then why the fuck isn't it integrated into the game?!

Meh, its a small grievance really, I'm still going to buy this entertainment software package.

Could you please do some research before posting this sensationalist crap & causing people to react as above?

BF3 doesn't have a server browser because BF3 doesn't have a main menu.

Everything is controlled through the Battlelog website, VoIP, server browser, friends list, community forums, stats...everything.

Battlelog is fucking awesome. Seriously.

PS. You don't need to close the game and open it again to change server, simply alt+tab (which is super quick) to Battlelog & find a new one.

So, it's true then.EA doesn't really want my money.

OH, M F****G GOD!!! The Apocalypse is nigh!

Summed up: They are completely incompetent, incomprehensible puddles of arse gravy. What this essentially says is that they couldn't be bothered to code it.

This makes no sense. It's as if Nintendo or Capcom suddenly took over development.

Come to the darkside (read: Xbox 360)

This is where EA should step in and offer a solution that Steam doesn't have: An overlay with a server browser.

Wow... this just made my jaw drop... I don't even know how they dare say that shit in public.
Whoever the lead designer on this was needs one hell of a proper backhanded slap, beat some fucking brains into him.

Words can't even describe what fucking lazy stupidity this is for a triple A title.

BF3 is now officially a software suite. How can other games expect to keep up with EA and the bundled software they include in all their new games.

I'm curious, do we still get to manually update PunkBuster? Cuz I would hate to lose that feature.

First Origin, now this? What the fuck are they doing?

Please tell me they're joking. Who the hell thought that this is a good idea? Isn't the entire point of in game server browsers to streamline an intrusive process to make it as painless as possible? Then how exactly is it a good idea to make it MORE DIFFICULT and MORE ANNOYING for players to interact with their game? This just makes absolutely no sense, especially considering that they implemented in game server browsers in the other versions of the game.

I tend to jump between servers quite a bit until I find one I like, and the very idea of having to exit the game and restart it every time I want to switch servers is enough to put me off buying this game.

I've been ready to preorder the game for a long while, but every time I want to EA announces something else that makes me stop and rethink my purchasing decision. First it was the whole deal with origin, and now it's this. Now I'm once again stalling on my preorder. EA, if you really want to keep this customer you need to shut the hell up for a while before you pill on any MORE stuff that'll make me question whether your game is good enough for me to forgive the headache of getting to the gameplay.

I think my brain just hit the side of my skull due to the speed at which I turned away from battlefield, you know what? I think ill just save my money, thanks EA for making me more responsible

Well... looks i need to cancel my pre-order then. I guess they don't want me to buy it.

What the-?! Who the hell thought that this is a good idea? Don't they realise how often I change a server when I play a FPS? This just doesn't make any sense at all, except if they're too lazy to make one but they could just use the one from bc2. Css has in my opinion the best fps online browser but use at least one that works without having me to exit and start up the game again.
Do we really have to exit the game? Can't we at least just alt-tab it, or if I start the game through Steam, use the ingame browser? That would at least be a bit better, still a pretty retarded idea and whoever came up with it, should be punished by having to exit and start a game for all eternity.

So an even worse system that BFBC2 and a big step down from BF2 where you could look to what was going on in other servers without having to leave the serve you are on.

I suppose this is what they mean by progress.

Also battlelog is another service you have to go to on top of Origin in order to run the game. Yeah, good job there....

But yeah keep announcing great news like this, the game moves from something I want to pre-order, to a game I might get after launch and is now hovering around the will wait for it to be on sale.

People are really taking this for the worst imaginable. Yes there will be no ingame server browser. You're supposed to launch the game through Battlelogs server browser, which worked perfectly in the Alpha (I was in the Alpha trial) The server browser on Battlelog felt faster and more effective than the current ingame server browser in Battlefield Bad Company 2.

TLDR: There is a server browser, on battlelog, which infact works great! so chill out! ^^

You're not making their case any better with this statement.

This needs to be read by all. Though the internet hate machine is already spinning up >_>

I also had no issues with battlelog, it seemed to be the perfect central hub.

Well, assuming that you are correct about this. You probably need to copy and paste this into 30 different posts here becase in general, people don't actually read these posts, they just click on them to respond to the story in question( ergo: no one wants to engage in a coversation, yet everyone has an opinion they want to share).

What. The. Fuck.

Seriously? I mean...just....it breaks my brain to try and follow the thought process behind this.

<Edit>

Next EA will bring back gamespy!

I refused to pay for a game that runs from a fething website. If they can't gakking make a menu it ain't worth charging me for.

Also do you really think that alt-tab is gonna be fast on 64 player game with the amount of enivromental destruction thats been promised? Bad Company 2 doesn't alt-tab that well, what makes you think this will be different.

For reference I played the alpha and I hated the method of launching the game; at the time I as like "its only alpha", but now DICE can go shove it.

To think I was going to buy this game.
