Blizzard: We're "Very Serious" About Diablo III On Consoles

Blizzard is officially looking to hire folks for a console port of Diablo III, but it won't officially announce a console version of the game.

Over the past year, the rumor that Diablo III is coming to consoles has been drifting slowly into the realm of facts. Back in November, the developer admitted that it was considering bringing the game to consoles. Then, in June, a job posting specifically mentioned that the Diablo III team was working with PS3 game code. Now, Blizzard's admitted that it's "very, very serious about bringing the Diablo 3 experience to the console."

Lead designer Josh Mosqueira, speaking at a Gamescom press conference, all but confirmed that the port is going to happen, though the official words didn't come out of his mouth. Instead, he made the previous statement and then said that a team is being recruited to potentially port the game to consoles:

"Today, we're trying to build the best console team at Blizzard. We're looking for programmers, designers, artists who think their dream job would be to bring Diablo to the console. Trust me, it is a dream job.

"All I can say is it's going to be awesome. Stay tuned."

Of course, Blizzard probably won't officially announce the game on any console system until the project is officially under way and it's happy with how things are progressing. That said, gamers should look at the game's overall progress with "glass half full" perspective: it's expected that an open beta for the PC version is due to start before the end of September.

well in the long run, that's just more exposure and profit for them, so i'm not surprised by this at all, regardless if the game is able to keep up with it's pc counterpart.

i'm sure it'll sell decent enough, if not blizzard will come up with some super deal to bundle it with another game to get everyone hooked on the drug that is diablo

I'm looking forward to it because I don't have the money to buy a gaming PC. Hopefully, this doesn't degrade the quality of the PC version.

Uhhh... yay for consoles?.

Don't hold your breath just yet, this is Blizzard we're talking about, even if the console version is real, it'd be ready "when it's done" and we all know what it means.

This would explain their strong anti-modding policy.

I think Diablo 3 is slowly leaning towards the 'suck' end of the spectrum the more I hear about it. Especially if it follows the trend of Starcraft 2. Of course, this would have nothing to do with it being on console. Diablo was on the PSX.

As a person who played the hell out of Diablo on the Playstation, and Diablo II on the PC, I'll still be more than happy to pick this up on my PS3/PC when it comes out.

And Starcraft was on the N64.

Of course they're serious, the closed system they've set is perfect for console games.

I'm not holding my breath here...it would be nice if they got this thing off the ground but I'm worried that this may be the first console game that requires you to be online to play (ok ok, not really but still)

And yet, the armadillo.

It'll hacked and cracked anyway.

Yep, they're just trying to figure out how they'll muscle in their Real-$ Auction House system into the console port most likely. And just like the Always-On DRM, that will NEVER make it to consoles, which is a good thing.

I could definitely see this being the biggest issue. There is no way MS is going to allow a cash market system in an Live enabled game so unless Blizzard goes PS3 exclusive it will take some work to make things work out.

The game itself will run perfectly fine. In fact, I'd the PSX version of Diablo 1 worked better on console than it did on the PC outside of the positively silly memory card requirement that it had.

Now it is clear why Diablo III has no movable camera and no mods...

I can see it coming to the PS3 exclusively because of what Sony did with Valve and Portal 2. Which is cool and all, but I feel that the Diablo series is one to be experienced by all.

That's all well and good,... but are they super serial?

OT: I wouldn't mind it, but I don't think I'd WANT to play a Diablo game on a console. Same reason I'd never want to play a LoZ title on PC. Just feels... iffy.

God........ dammit.

I just don't know what to say anymore. I really don't. I mean, woo yay consoles, whatever, but... that sort of thing doesn't seem like it would work that well. And I don't want to see things cocked up any more than they have been.

Designing a game for the PC, THEN porting it to consoles?

That seems like the way to go.

well, it better not be online only...

and it better be for Xbox 360...

Not quite. Moveable camera is an idea native to consoles that came across to the PC. In fact, it works better on consoles than on PC. Don't put that thing on consoles.

Really?
Can I be enlightened which game had movable camera and was top down on console first?
Not that I support the person you replied. His post was as absurd as yours.

Before you use the post button anytime more know this that the first FPS was on a PC.

Movable first person perspective isn't really the same thing as movable camera. I'm talking the third person open 3d games of the fifth generation that hbad fully movable cameras.

Of course, they want that auction house money that's going to flow in with the good items in single player made extremely rare by the devs to drive up demand.

I wouldn't mind so much about this greed and nickle and diming shit if they charged 15-20 bucks for a game instead. Then it wouldn't be so hard to put up with single player game experience sucking and a constant online leash that won't let you play if your net is down.

Nice, now we can spend the next couple months listening to "ZOMG WTF BLIZZARD! I wanted years for a new Diablos, and now it's getting dumb down for shitty consoles, I'm boycotting this game, who's with me!"

Although i like the idea of the game coming to console's i still think this time around it's just another excuse for Blizz to make another money printing machine with their current monetary systems.

.... This has made my day. YAY!!!! No more wondering if my pc will run it for me! :)

Well yeah but every game gets released with the hope that it'll turn into a massive moneymaker. I always thought Blizzard are pretty reasonable when it comes to that compared to everyone else.

They want a piece of the market because Torchlight managed to make basically the same gameplay work on the console.

Blizzard, like all other companies, likes money. Consoles are a huge market, and therefore give them a huge source of income which means they can spend a decade on their next game.

It makes fiscal sense for them to do it. The console market dwarfs the PC gaming marking, unfortunately. They will make a killing, then maybe stop making PC games all together, which I wouldn't mind. I have had enough of 6 year release schedules, their own personal "gold" selling operation, and just about completely finished with companies that have always on DRM.

I saw many argument on this how it can't be done... which is so stupid, if any Blizzard game is perfect for the console market this is the one.

Tag (fail)! You're it!

I am somehow even less excited about a console version of Diablo 3 than the PC version. That's pretty impressive, considering how they've already managed to completely kill all interest that I had in it at this point.

To be fair, it's getting dumbed down regardless.

Oh, it can be done. It just can't be done at anywhere near the same level of quality. Inventory management, not-exclusively-directional-skills and all that.

Right, so being reasonable is what motivated them to have three separate payments[1] incorporated into the D3 RMAH, region lock their games, remove any form of P2P, and, with their last one, have an incredibly draconian and restricting custom game system.

[1] Two of which are perfectly understandable, and one of which is one of the most blatantly greedy moves I've ever seen taken with an online game ever. I'm talking of course about the fact that they're going to charge you for every single real money auction you create, regardless of whether or not it's successful

Now, now no need to blow a gasket. Just because it's coming out on consoles doesn't mean it's getting dumb down. At worst we'll have to detail with less "shiny" graphics and a smaller button count. Which has worked for many hack and slash games that came out for the consoles before. What I'm worried about is if they try to bring over the "Always Connected to the Internet" bit for it. Not everyone has their consoles connected nowadays so that will put a damper on things. On the other hand I'm still not buying it for PC despite wanting to because I have a spotty connection and live in the boonies. I get most of my stuff from Amazon nowadays.

No big supprize actually, seeing how the original game was on the playstation as well.

I don't see how this should hurt the PC version, since it gets ported form pc to console, and not the other way around, so no problems for me.
