Weird Razer Ad Promises PC Gaming Is Not Dead

image

Peripheral maker Razer has a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal as well as a website promising to prove on August 26 that PC gaming is not dead.

The whole "PC gaming is dead" thing has been pronounced and debunked so many times over so many years that I don't think anyone takes it too seriously anymore. It's still a good way to bring the mouse-and-keyboard crowd out in defense of its favored platform, though, as the existence of things like Steam and the growing significance of digital distribution has done nothing to soothe the raw nerve of platform envy that glows red every time someone even looks at it wrong. Or at least that's the best explanation I can come up with for the vague, and vaguely aggressive, full-page ad that Razer recently took out in the Wall Street Journal.

To Our Friends Xbox, PlayStation and Wii,

We have all heard the rhetoric about the demise of PC Gaming - the stories that console gaming will take over all gaming and that PC gamers will be left with shoddy ports of console titles.

The rumors of our untimely demise have been greatly exaggerated. We are more than 300 million PC gamers worldwide and this legion is growing every day. Today there are more PC gamers than all console gamers combined and we have been silent in the face of the closed gaming systems that have been propagated.

We, the PC Gamers, have been here since the beginning and have seen the industry grow to surpass movies and music, and we look forward to an open world where console and PC gamers will stand side by side as gamers in arms.

We are here today to tell you, that on the 26th of August, we will seek to end the silence and bring a new age of openness and innovation to all gaming. Together we shall remind you - that PDC Gaming is NOT dead.

GLHF,

Razer

The ad also includes a URL, pcgamingisnotdead.com, which leads to an image of an old TRS-80-style desktop computer that delivers a spoken message very similar to the Wall Street Journal ad and also displays a countdown timer, slowly ticking its way down to August 26. There are some competing theories about what Razer has waiting for zero hour: GameSpy thinks a line of gaming PCs is on the way, while Kotaku has put its money on the release of the Razer Switchblade.

It's all in good fun, I suppose, but does this come across as a little silly to anyone else? I'm as die-hard a PC gamer as anyone and I certainly don't mind tweaking the noses of the button-mashers every now and then, but the idea that we need a big announcement to tell the world that the platform is still alive and kicking feels awfully dated. Is anyone still actually losing sleep over this?

If it really is the switch blade, massive nerdgasms will be incoming.

Hell no.

I think these guys have some major BALLS to post something like this myself.

Yeah its silly as hell.

But I love Razer. So I look forward to whatever the hell they are doing.

wait didn't we move on to "AAA gaming is getting killed by apps?"

Thats adorable. They're actually so desperate they need to include the farmville numbers. Okay, fine, we console gamers concede that PC gaming is the best medium for giving the creators of substandard timewasters like Zynga money for some of the shoddiest games and most evil behaviour gaming has ever seen.

There are avenues to prove the validity and worth of PC gaming, but as long as Zynga exists, numbers is definitely not one of them. And not giving context to those numbers just makes you look like a liar.

Yeah, I'm with you. PC gaming isn't dead/dying.

Does anyone even carry that view anymore?

I'm a PC gamer, and I find this whole thing very silly.

teebeeohh:

We did. Making this ad retro.

Pretty soon, we'll go back to apps, because it will be retro too.

Silly add. And never really liked razor.

I stillprefer PC-gaming and since the 26th is my birthday I hope their proof will be a new PC and a massive library of massive games to me. I'm pretty sure they will do this for me.

300 million?...Where they heck do they get that number? Yes, there are a lot of PC gamers. We already knew that, but 300 million is an EXTREME stretch.

26/08 is when Deus Ex: Human Revolution is released over here, so anything else that happens on that date will probably pass me by. Good luck to them, nonetheless.

Okay, there is one other thing, but it has nothing to do with gaming and is not even 100% confirmed to happen on that date, so yeh.

Irridium:
Yeah, I'm with you. PC gaming isn't dead/dying.

Give the option of Keyboard and mouse on and a console and the term "PC gaming" will become extinct and the proper term will be "Gaming"

OT: I love Razer, but this is just them being smug. Also isnt the date on the letter the date for the new version of the Mamba coming out?

I won't game on any device with a screen smaller than 26", so I hope they aren't just trying to shill that damn Switchblade. 5.1 Surround is also nice to have; screw earbuds.

PC gaming is more than just keyboard and mouse.

Too tired to write a paragraph though...

If it's just a new line of computers i will be disappoint.

You'd be surprised.

I'm a PC gamer, and I'm tired of this foolishness.

Not really.

Kind of bizarre you seem to be an avid PC gamer when you're coming out with stuff like that.

Seeing as the 26th is my birthday they could just give me whatever it is they are planning on showing off. One can only hope...

PC gaming will always be number 1 for me... you can thank The Secret of Monkey Island many many years ago for making it so.

Wait, so does this mean that Razor has made something that is actually worth buying?

I've signed up for this yesterday and I have no idea why. They promise us something that we already know. PC gaming isn't and will never be dead. It's nonsense.

Wow, what a load of sh*t. I don't think anyone still cares about this "end of PC game" nonsense. The bullsh*ters have all moved on to the death of consoles and the rise of social gaming (sorry Extra Credits :[ ).
This is either a silly advertisement or a the message of a madman.

PC gaming will not die until consoles become upgradeable over time and have better controls. I hate to imagine playing a Total War game on my xbox, it'd probably lag and the controls would suck.

Has anyone else noticed that this entire thing is a V for vendetta reference. The speech is a tribute to V's speech when he takes over the TV station.
Also, why do we have to identify as PC gamers or console gamers? I play PC games and console games, I don't limit myself arbitrarily to one system or genre. Why would anyone do that? A lot of great games come out as console or PC exclusives, why miss out?

Well, given there are 1 billion gamers in the world..., it doesn't sound quite that much of a stretch.

In fact, it's only .3% of all gamers...pretty low really. Depending on what version of a billion we're using.

The ad was really quite cool. I'd be very excited if it were for the appearance of some new idealistic PC game developer/awesome pc game that takes the platforms strengths to a new level/something I could actually look forward to playing. But just an ad for a either line of pre-built gaming rigs or, at best, gaming netbooks with LCD keyboards? Just another well thought out ad campaign, trying too hard to sell something insignificant.

Oh how i love Razer for selling USELESS external devices at an extremely expensive price and still making profit.

Depends how you cut that statistic. Are we counting people who played a video game once and are therefore listed? Is there any cross over between the numbers (Example, Are Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends' total player count being counted despite players belonging to both communities.)? How are they determining who the unique users are and who aren't? How do they count for the people who own multiple consoles and a pc gaming computer?

The numbers too large to be taken seriously. The thing about stats is that they tend to become more inaccurate with the increase in your target population. We really need a set definition for the term gamer, because under the current one, my 3 year old cousin, my 45 year old Aunt and my 2 year old cousin all count as gamers despite their only experience with it being an Iphone App.

hmm sounds interesting. somebody please post the obligitory pc gaming isnt dead poster!

As a console gamer by trade who has recently bought a gaming computer, I sure hope PC gaming isn't dying out!

Lets say 1 billion is 1000 million. Even if PC gamers consist of 300 million, the article says that there are more PC gamers than console gamers. That leaves at minimum 400 million gamers who don't play on a PC or Console, the majority.

So what do that majority of gamers play on?

I know this isn't it, but it would be cool if they partnered with valve, and to go along with it they released a trailer for a certain game which everyone has been expecting, but there I go fantasizing about shit. I am curious for what it actualy will be.

Interesting.
On August 27th I plan to prove that dinosaurs aren't dead.

PC gaming might not be dead, but half my Razer peripherals are.

PC gaming will never die man, WE'RE F*CKING IMMORTAL!

OK, how about DAU/MAU?

from my post here

18 million people playing Cityville (presumably on a PC) daily. And that's specific PC gamers per day, I believe.

Steam has about 4 million users online at the moment. It's quite feasible really.

C95J:

So what do that majority of gamers play on?

Well, you've got Teletext, iPhones, Androids, Oric, BBC, Commodore, Spectrum, iPad, Xbox, Playstation 1/2/3, Gameboy, DS, VCS, 2600, 400, 800, some TVs, Wii, Wii U, Game+Watch, Digital Watches...

But given EA's statement, I'm assuming they're saying overall. 30 million daily...which isn't that difficult to believe, is a fair old chunk. I'm guessing more than the Wii or the Mac.

They already have option like that and they aren't as good. They are basically a mouse and nunchuck type thing and it is still not Gaming and never will be Gaming because companies like these feuds. Aside from that PC gamer is more than Kb+M that is just one of its main advantages.

OT: Nice little marketing campaign for whatever they are doing.
