BioShock Cosplay Is Better Down Where It's Wetter

Lazy fish, bloody bunny masks and a few million gallons of seawater make for brilliant BioShock-themed imagery.

Atlanta, Georgia is known primarily for three things: William Tecumseh Sherman's pyromaniacal 1864 siege, Outkast's brilliant Stankonia album, and the four Cy Young Awards that Greg Maddux picked up in the early 90s. Otherwise, it's a sleepy, oppressively hot burg wrought from Coca-Cola bottles and fluffy biscuits.

Also, it has an aquarium. This place, fittingly dubbed the "Georgia Aquarium," contains the usual aquatic beasties, but in a stroke of oft-replicated engineering brilliance, it also includes a section where visitors can stroll beneath the waves in a crude approximation of what it might be like to live in a glassy, underwater city.

Much like the one seen in the BioShock game series.

In seemingly unrelated happenings, the recent Labor Day weekend saw hordes of geeks descend upon the city for the annual Dragon*Con gathering. If you've ever attended the event, you likely know that it has become tradition for a large collection of *Con attendees to gather at the Georgia Aquarium.

Irrational Games, the people behind the BioShock series, likely put the two events together, and knowing their fans' propensity for cosplaying characters from the series, rushed down to the Aquarium to snap photos of BioShock characters in a close approximation of their natural setting.

The result, as you can see from the handful of images in the gallery below (or in the full collection you can find on the firm's Flickr gallery) is rather clever. The juxtaposition of maniacal splicers and serene aquatic life is as jarring a contrast as is possible in our meatspace reality without actually dismembering anyone or figuring out a way to shoot bees from one's hands.

Though, I have to wonder what the fish think of this whole thing. The comedy answer is obviously that the bunny masks blow their tiny fishy minds, but in reality those are likely the most jaded sea bass on the planet. They've seen it all, and can't be bothered to point out the anti-Humanist flaws in Objectivist theory, no matter how convincing your Little Sister costume might be.

Is the first picture edited or is that a huge ass fish?

Nice little sister, i really gotta get this game.

The 1st picture looks suspiciously like my ex-wife. The woman not the fish before all the gags thank you

little-sister is my favorite big-daddy

Not bad but the costumes are way too neat and clean.

Being formally from Atlanta, I approve of this greatly

No, that's a big fish. They have some very large fish there.

Huge ass fish.

I've never played Bioshock but from screen caps that looks pretty good.

As for the fish, it might be a Grouper fish. Those things can get as big as a large man.

I actually saw a really good splicer costume at zombie day in Pittsburgh, I'll try to get it on here.

I'm Andrew Ryan... And I'm here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to go into an aquarium with a group of bloodied madmen. No says the man on the entrance "Thats not an 8 year old girl" you'll have to buy an adult ticket. No says the security guard by the Sharks "you can't bring that Syringe OR that lead pipe". No says the manager of the aquarium "You'll have to leave you're making a scene" I rejected these answers, and instead I chose something different. I chose the impossible!
I chose RAPTURE!

I love you...

OT: That is some awesome cosplay. Hmm, Maybe I should replay Bioshock...

I wonder whether they went in through the entrance dressed like that, or changed once they were inside... shame they couldn't get a real little girl to be the Little Sister though, didn't any of them know a friend with a child they could use? I've really gotta try dressing up my younger sister like this before she gets too old for the role.

Little sister looks good.

Is it wrong that the Andrew Ryan cosplayer kind of reminds me of the boss from the first season of the IT crowd?

Earnest Cavalli:
blow their tiny fishy minds

Tim Minchin, is that you?

Nice little sister, i really gotta get this game.

It's a grouper. And it's not even one of the big ones!

I've had the pleasure of diving in GA Aquarium's super-huge tank (complete with four whale sharks!) and the grouper are really one of the most intimidating things in there... aside from the ten-foot hammerhead, of course.

Picture 5 looks pretty awesome. The best one is little sister of course.

Otherwise nice job. I can think of three characters missing from this group: Floating hands(the player character), Big Daddy, and The Magician.

Dastardly:

Lucky! I can't even begin to express my jealousy. How did you wrangle that one?

OT: This is really good Cosplay. The little sister is the best out of them all.

This paragraph killed me. Cheers for the lolz.

I'm pretty impressed by the costumes too. Although the last one reminds me of Doctor Horrible in his League costume. So much so that I'm pretty sure that the last guy just carried a surgical mask in his pocket so he could cosplay as two characters on the same day.

That's still pretty impressive if you think about it.

You're scaring the norms lol. The title is a little miss leading.

It's probably because I'm not familiar with the related con, but I'm wondering how the aquarium staff reacted to the sudden influx of... uniquely dressed individuals.

So... um... The girl dressed as the Little Sister is kinda cute. What? You were all thinking it! What do you think those comments about the "nice little sister" and such were really thinking? She's cute. That's what.

Damn. I really have to go to the aquarium one day. I live in Atlanta and still haven't gone. I really want to, too. But when it first opened, it was always packed. I also have to go to Dragon Con one year. I know so many people that want to go, but we never do. I think that is a crime and I need to rectify it one day.

Anyway, it's really cool that this happened in my neck of the woods. Oh, and it's NOT always hot. It gets pretty cold in the winter. We just never really get any snow. Maybe an inch will stick every couple of years, but that's usually gone by the end of the day. Though, it does kinda shut down the city.

Is it me or is Bioshock cosplay generally of a really high standard?

*thinks fondly back to the really hot Elizabeth cosplayer...*

"It's better down where it's wetter"

Am I the only person with a sick mind who read this as a sexual meaning?

No. I'm afraid you are not the only one....

What's more, I now have the "Under the Sea" song from The Little Mermaid stuck in my head. Fuck.

Would you kindly post more cosplay pictures. ^^

Great pictures...might enjoy them more if I actually played the games, but until then I guess I will have to settle for cosplay.

Come on, Atlanta is known for more than those things. There's the airport, and umm, yeah that's about it.

I took a look at the other pictures from the link. Say what you will about the Atlanta aquarium; they've got a MOTHERFUCKING WHALE SHARK in that tank.

Hey did you take these fantastic photo's at "Underwater World" Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast Queensland, Australia? It's just a very, VERY familiar aquarium. ^^

Very well put. ^^ Wonderful costumes man!

Damn that little sisters cute. Id let her suck my Adam...

The cosplay woulda been better if they would let them throw around a few paper cups and shit to litter the place.

Also Georgia is primarily known for one other thing but we don't talk about that in police society.[/southern accent]

The little sister is...really impressive. Wow.
How can I meet her? Please please please?
