Anonymous Threatens Fox News Over Occupy Wall Street

The hacker collective wants to stop Fox from belittling the protesters of Occupy Wall Street.

Anonymous has thrown its weight behind virtually every cause the last few years. They have attacked Scientology for its so-called evil practices, they brought down major banks' website in support of Julian Assange's Wikileaks, and they even went after Gene Simmons when he openly taunted them. Now, the group has released a video with a mechanized voice of a woman stating that they are in support of the ongoing protests in New York City and around the world. Anonymous believes that the pundits on Fox News have too often used libelous descriptions of the protesters to invalidate the protests, and the only recourse is to shut down the network's website. The attack is called "Operation: Fox Hunt."

"Fox is now the target of Anonymous because of their continued propaganda against the Occupations," the woman's voice says. "They use words such as filthy, disgusting and dirty to describe the protesters. Since they will not stop belittling the occupiers, we will simply shut them down."

The date chosen for this attack? November 5th, also known as Guy Fawkes Day. Fawkes tried to blow up the Parliament building in 1605 to place a Catholic monarch on the Throne of England, and his likeness was popularized by the film adaptation of Alan Moore's V for Vendetta. Anonymous adopted use of the Guy Fawkes mask to hide the identities of members when gathering in public - even though the proceeds from mask sales makes it way back to Hollywood, but that's besides the point - and Fawkes has become a kind of de facto symbol for the group.

"Anonymous will not only shut down Fox News," said Anonymous. "We will also engage in a propaganda campaign of our own, to show them how it feels to be chastised."

The hackers of Anonymous have succeeded in taking down websites periodically before, so it is possible that the Operation Fox Hunt may work ... at least until someone switches on a new server to deal with DDos attack.

If Anonymous has the power to shut down Fox News, Why haven't they already done it?
Seriously, WHY?

And that pre-programmed voice completely undermines what little gravity the statement had.

Huh, these clowns are still around? Thought they got bored and went back to pokemon

Am I the only one who's grown weary of Anonymous as a whole? Ooooh, they're gonna shut your whatever down, sooooo scary, no one is safe, they're the defenders of free speech...

They're just a bunch of bored hackers. No matter the intentions, illegal is illegal. I'm sure if Dr. King could get people to do things the legal way, they can too.

God I hate Anon.

Oh no! Not the Fox News website!

This is relevant: http://xkcd.com/932/

I don't mind anon, this makes me mind them even less.

Assholes bullying assholes.

On the one hand, what Fox News does is wrong and ridiculously so.

On the other hand, what Anonymous does is wrong and ridiculously so.

Can I root for mutually assured destruction?

"Frank Miller's" V For Vendetta?

.........Really? Why don't you try looking that up again, Greg. Two seconds of internet research, Escapist. That's all I ask. Please give credit where credit is due.

I missed that one. Awesome.

I love it when people think taking down a website is equivalent to hacking the Pentagon.

My thoughts exactly.

"Anonymous has thrown its weight behind virtually every cause the last few years."

For a given value of "virtually", yes.

Still, I have to hand it to them for really fucking the OWS people over. They aren't just protestors anymore, they are cyber-criminals.

Is all Anon going to do is try to shut down Fox's website? If so, it's funny how powerless Anon really is.

Also, Alan Moore wrote V, not Miller.

"We will also engage in a propaganda campaign of our own, to show them how it feels to be chastised."

I thought the internet did that enough on it's own already. Or are they not aware of all the people that already consider Fox to be an unreliable source of news that supposedly nothing more than a talking piece for Conservative propaganda and can only properly be referred to as "Faux News"?

[sarcasm]Bravo, Anonymous. Way to catch up with the times. *eyeroll*[/sarcasm]

I cant wait to see how this goes down, fox has deserved to be hit for awhile, altho freedom of speech means freedom for speech you hate also.

I hate the protests but I hate fox more. Get on with it!

Anonymous: We don't like what you're saying so we're just going to hack your site like little girls having a slapfight.

Look at it this way, Fox. Now you have reason to start securing those servers in hopes of protecting them from Anonymous.

But wait, if you hire on new IT help, doesn't that make Anonymous a "job creator?" Or do you need to be one of those 1%'ers? I guess we'll find out.

because tho Fox news are generally assholes, they've never really given anonymous a specific reason to attack them

In some states it was illegal for more than four black people to gather at a time. And Segregation and discrimination WAS the law, Dr. King was getting people to BREAK the law. Legal does not mean right. What Fox News Does is technically legal, but it's not right either. And I'm not just talking about their coverage of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

well that depends on if the website is actually taken down, the only way that can truly happen is if the servers or whatever contains the actual information for the website are physically destroyed.

They defend Assange and Wikileaks in the name of freedom of speech, but have no problem shutting up a news station that makes fun of their wall street movement...they sound like a bunch of hypocrit-DDOS:El_Zorro

That would be Alan Moore mister Tito. Not Frank Miller. At least Moore never went insane and tried to make a shitty sequel to his magnum opus.

We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We use Windows Movie Maker for our videos. Also, crappy filters.

OT: Sure, kill them. They have outlived their entertainment.

I'm left wing, I hate Fox.

I love anon....now I live them 10x more. Fox news is finally going to get a well deserved kick in the ass.

Oh NOES!

Anon is going to freeze up another website for a few hours!

Everybody run!

EDIT: Don't be mad at Greg Tito for another of his (intentional?) errors, this one being in the V for Vendetta line, it's not his job to make sure what he writes is factual, sheesh.

EDIT 2: After watching that video...... "WAAAAAAA I don't like their adjectives! Lets fight! How dare they say dirty, filthy, and disgusting to describe people that are disgusting, filthy, and dirty!!!!!!

Rally Anon! Let us sink down to the level that we think they are at and react in the same way to show how kewl we are! Let us all call them names too! But lets wear masks because we are really only cowards who hide behind a computer screen!!"

/facepalm

Is this really Anonymous??

alan moore comic book v for vendetta, you can than me later greg tito.

What if anonymous didn't threaten anything, and Fox was just making it up? It wouldn't be the first time that they just made up the news.

Let's see...A bunch of overly conservative anti video game assholes, vs people I'm afraid to even think bad things about for fear that my computer will be turned against me. Hmmm, who to root for...

Go Anonymous.

I don't mind seeing Fox "News" suffer.
Anonymous, do your thang. I shall be watching the news on November 5th. Remember, remember...

Unfortunately all this is going to do is give Fox News more credibility and attention. There will be blowback and it will end up having been a bad idea.

Both the Dems and the Reps are owned equally by corporate interests, I have no idea why people like siding with the supposed 'underdogs' who are exactly as rich from ill-gotten gains as their opposition. Red Team, Blue Team, you're cheering for the exact same people and attacking your fellow citizens instead of the people who're manipulating you. It's depressing.

It's about time that someone decided to screw with Fox. I haven't seen or heard a single good thing come from Fox news that wasn't an apology for something stupid they did before.

Probably Anon is just a bunch of IT security experts trying to get firms paranoid enough to tighten security and hire new staff. So that the guys from Anon get more job offers and a decent wage for a change...

The funny thing is Fox will probably spin this into some kind of anti-Obama campaign, claiming the democrats are somehow behind this.

Also, that animation at the end was pretty cool.

I do wish news about people calling themselves anonymous would stop getting reported as 'anon does so and so'
That's like saying 'person with hat does so and so', it means nothing since anyone can call themselves anon/wear a hat.

No, he went insane and wrote some kind of erotic fanfiction about 13 year old girls from fairytales.
