Ninja Theory Invites a Select Few Players To Try DmC: Devil May Cry

Ninja Theory Invites a Select Few Players To Try DmC: Devil May Cry

image

Ninja Theory has invited several Devil May Cry veterans to try its controversial take on the series.

The initial response to the Enslaved: Odyessy to the West and Heavenly Sword developer's semi-reboot of the DMC franchise was not particularly positive, to put it lightly. Fans didn't like the fact the series had been handed off to a relatively unproven western developer, they didn't like the fact the game would be running at 30FPS rather than the traditional 60 and they certainly didn't like the grittier redesigned Dante - whose uncanny resemblance to lead designer Tameem Antoniades has not gone unnoticed. Ninja Theory was initially dismissive of the fan skepticism, with Antoniades claiming the complainers "secretly wanted to like [the game]."

Now it appears Ninja Theory is interested in fan feedback, at least from certain fans. According to NeoGAF, "top DMC players" in the UK have been invited to Ninja Theory's Cambridge Studio to try the game and hopefully offer some feedback. Previous DMC titles have had bustling communities dedicated to high-level player, and Devil May Cry 3, which is widely regarded as best game in the series, was developed with input from top-tier players.

I wonder if this is a genuine request for player input, something Ninja Theory hasn't been particularly receptive to thus far, or if it's a PR move in the vein of Valve's method of dealing with Left 4 Dead 2 boycotters. Either way, the message I'm getting is that if you complain loud enough, developers will offer you a trip to their studio and free food. Begin whining.

Does this mean we can expect another news post within a week of this happening with what they thought about it then?

Either way to have pulled this Ninja Theory must be confident about DmC's success with DMC fans.

I don't secretly want to like it, nor do I secretly care about Devil May Cry. Somehing being true and trying to makes yourself believe something is true are two very different things, Mr. Antoniades.

Redundant titles really annoy me. Like the new Doctor Who logo where the Tardis becomes a big DW. We already know that DW stands for Doctor Who, you don't need to remind us. Ugh.

Ninja Theory is staffed by trolls. I think I'm perfectly justified in speaking for all the skeptics when I say NO ONE "wants to secretly like" this fuckheap of an alternate interpretation. In fact this is going the EA way; they steal the rights to a popular franchise, take a shit all over it then deny the backlash from the public.

I'm fucking serious when I say no one should buy this. Minimize their profits from this treachery, so Ninja Theory will learn a lesson in source material respect.

Hopefully those chosen won't sugarcoat things if its as bad as I'm thinking, specifically stuff like those slo mo kill cam BS, either way nice to see they're trying to get the old DMC fans back.

Ninja Theory has yet to confirm the emails authenticity BTW

If that's aimed at me DmC: Devil May Cry is actually the title of the game. Yeah I know, it's dumb.

I'll be keeping an eye on the NeoGAF forums. Assuming the players aren't under an NDA then yeah, I'll cover their responses.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who hates the new Doctor Who logo... what was wrong with the first one they made for the rebooted series? D:

OT: Again, I personaly think this is just trying salavage something from the PR mess Ninja Theory has done with the game. The fact they changed it to a another reality pretty much proves they don't have that much confidence in it at all. It's not even a interesting interpretation of the series like how they did the reboot of Battlestar Galactica.

I think @Cid Silverwing has the right idea to show how angry we are, just don't buy the game. Don't scream "Boycott!" and rage online about it, just don't buy the bloody thing.

Omigawd!

Nho whyet hurrr.

Eeees nawt DANTAYYYY!

I'm looking forward to it, I hope we get some more gameplay footage out of this.

it's funny, but i read elsewhere (unfortunately i can't remember the name of the site (it was a weird one... japanise-spelling/sounding but i think it was american???)- which pisses me off as some of the comments on it about this game were hillarious!!!...) that NT really didn't care about getting the old DMC fans back and were too busy trying to get new ones.

yeah know, this is actually rather annoying because we all know that this IS a PR move and whatever the "top DMC players" say will be edited to make the game not sound as ugly as it is (or make it sound like the most kick-arse game in history *pointiedly looking at you Duke!! ^.0) and how do we know they'll ACTUALLY have gamers playing, they could just be making this crap up!!?

but untill they actually bring back all that made us LOVE DMC in the first place -not this shite of a reboot garbage gimmick- i won't be buying it (but i will be keeping one beary eye on any news of it)
but i'm not holding my breath for anything good to happen (just looking at the state of games nowadays is enough to make one depressed for anything good to be made)

Say, Ninja Theory. How about releasing a demo and letting us decide for ourselves whether or not this is a worthy addition to the franchise.

I still intend to reserve my final judgements for when I actually play the damn thing, but I have no intention of listening to players praise the game when there's a possibility they're being paid off.

A gift for insulting all fans of the franchise? Oh wait no, its just for a select few that can/will be bought off for positive reviews.

Remember, all haters secretly want to like it.

I don't care if it has solid gameplay.
That's not good enough.
It has to meet the standards DMC 3 set, and it probably needs to take hints from Bayonetta seeing as it's the same guy who made them.

This game will not be a revival of the franchise, because the franchise wasn't dead yet.

And the name DmC is stupid, Why the fuck is it uncapitalised?
It doesn't look new age or 'hip' for fucks sake.

i agree with this.

you may be giving them to much credit for a learning curve though. after all they spent the better part of development bad mouthing the fans, and NOW they care what we think? right .... I buy that, i hope they rip the game several new ones

I secretly want my shit to smell good, but it ain't gonna happen.

I'd really like to...

1) See the credential of these "select few" players.
2) SEE what they have said about the game
and
3) See and play the game myself, because I don't trust them.

This whole "I dont care what you think"-to-"Please re-affirm this is DmC" attitude smacks of PR-bull, and it smells worse than how "De-ante" looks. Yeah, I'm referring to this games protagonist in a way that clearly separates him from Dante. It's a parallel universe, they ain't the same characters, and it took them a f%^&ing year just to say that instead of the whole "its a prequel/reboot/prequelboot" shit.

go away NT, nobody likes you

Enslaved and Heavenly Sword are both great, I have faith for the gameplay of "DmC".

The best way to rub NT's nose in it would be if millions of copies of the HD rerelease of the Devil May Cry collection sold, and only meger amounts of their DmC.

I think their announcing the alternate universe setting last week is bull. They stated in earlier press releases it was a prequel; now they are just trying to save face because everyone hates that strung out emo they are trying to pass off as Dante.

The fans love Dante because he is DANTE. NT doesn't like original Dante so they change him. So, NT, are you making a game for yourselves, or the fans? Only one option will make you money...

Why is this game keep sounding more and more like a bad Self-Insert fanfic?

Yeah, I know that was the title of the game. My ire was pointed strictly at Ninja Theory. And at Doctor Who.

This reminded me 2 things.
1. To start another playthrough of DMC3.
2. Not to buy this blasphemous black hair Dante QQQQQQQQQ

Seriously though, that wasn't really a smart move. People just forgetting about the stupid changes and designs they make. They should've waited a bit more for this pathetic PR.

After already saying that this game is pointless to the series? I'll Pass on this.

It's a shame it's not coming to the PC, because even if it's certainly not the most popular game in the series (heck, I even get the impression people despise this more than DMC2), it looks like it's going to be lots of fun, even if Dante wants to cut his veins at some point in the game.

There has been no follow up to the email responses. Hoax played on players?

so, KayGee, there's no hope of actually finding out what this game was like?
told you it was an arse-pull. this just shows the TRUE face of NT towards us gamers (which is ironic as it's us that pay their wages hah hah!! well, their not getting my cash)

i was actually going to say (2 months ago, but heck, i'm too lazy ^.0) that i saw the 'escape' and another dmc trailers on here and my first reaction was; i IMMEDIATLY HATED that girl (whoever she is/was) because all i could think while looking at her was "you watch she's going to be some soddin' love intrest/whinny partner (that you'll have to team-up with/help/escort)/ annoying-person-that-has-no-value/ or just there to bitch at you" (like that stupid telepathic gypsie in lords of shadow (i refuse to call THAT a castlevania game (and i'm not going to go into my reasons why otherwise i'll get kicked-off for ranting...angerly - seriously, all she did was telepathicly SHOUT AT YOU!! *i'mnotgoingtorant,i'mnotgoingtorant.deepbreath*))
also that dam-te's speed looks slightly faster then previous running-speeds and if he stood still would those buildings crush him ^.^ (and the person who designed that break-away floor was playing WAY TOO MUCH Tetris beforehand :D )
but i admit, it LOOKED fun (bare-in-mind i haven't played any games for quite awhile) but i still wasn't convinced
and i've recently (AFEW weeks back) read some YouTube comment about duh-te being an angel-devil hybrid!?? wha??
(and no matter what colour they do his hair (black/quick-flash of white) it still looks STUPID! that haircut is STUPID)

if NT wanted to do a DMC game then why don't they follow it on from DMC2 -before you rant hear me out-
DMC2 had an open ending- Dante went to hell and we don't really know if that was him that come back, all we heard was the bike, we didn't see him on it (for all we know it could have been Trish??)
and not to mention the biggest fact- he. went. to. hell!
that is a goldern oppatunaty right there! we don't know what hell looks like so it could be made up of a multitude of worlds, place, realities, dimensions and it'd FIT! there'd be no wrong way of doing it.
and we don't know HOW LONG Dante was in the underworld *hinthint*
so there's a whole host of new material/stories waiting to be explored here
but
if this path was ever taken by NT then they need to do these things RIGHT first
-DMC fans fell inlove with the model of Dante that was presented to them in DMC -(or DMC3 if you arrived to the party late ^.0) -(even if i thought his attitude was of a jerk i still thought he was a pretty cool character to play) so don't go changing that -it happened in DMC2 and not alot of fans liked that change (i did because i didn't like Dante's attitude and thought the more mature Dante was better but it wasn't as exciting or fast-paced as DMC which was a letdown)
-Dante has access to an arsonal of weaponry not just his handguns and some scythe/axe/whip/thingy, he has his pistols, other guns (shotgun, nightmare etc.) rebellion (swords of all shapes and strengths +speeds), gauntlets (which had hand-to-hand combat), Devil Trigger-enhanced moves, and this is before we get to DMC3!! (and 4!!) and because DMC2 comes, cronocly, last that means Dante has a WHOLE LOAD of diffrent weapons/moves/'magic' at his disposal. you can't just get rid of that!! (and you can't pull an amnesia-bull-pull like they did to kain in blood omen 2)
-his hair has to stay WHITE! and it has to be the equal of a mop dangling in his face!
-he is NOT GRUFF-VOICED!! (seriously why do all male characters now sound like they were voiced by the same grumpy guy??)
-he has ATTITUDE, you can give him a personality beyond his devil-may-care one but he still won't take no bull from anyone
-his entire desgin and the world he inhabits was desgined to be COOL and that in-turn made it FUN, Dante never took himself or anything else SERIOUSLY -which was how the developers of DMC wanted it (cool, stylish and fun). when you make it into a more REALISTIC game you destroy what it was originally ment to be
(you can tell i'm annoyed, i can't spell or type correctly when i am ^>^)

and i think my rant is over.... *scratches head*....

You do realize that the arguments against this game have gone WAY beyond the fact that he just has black hair, right? This isn't a devil may cry game because of so many other things that are wrong with the design, not just black hair. If anybody doesn't like the game just because of Dante's hair color, they're an idiot.

I don't like it because I actually have self respect, and I absolutely hate the way that NT has been treating us ever since this whole mess started. Let me ask you something: when is it okay for a developer to insult you on a personal level and laugh at your criticism? When is it okay to be completely and totally disrespected time and time again? I'm not buying their game because I actually have self respect and consumer standards, this has nothing to do with white hair.

But regardless, cry some moar?

The game looks good, I'm going to buy it. But please, do continue with your self respect and consumer standards. Because, put simply

... lol? What gameplay trailers have you been watching? To me, every time I watch one, it looks like they're throwing every western gaming cliche' in the book. If you want to buy the game, by all means, go right on ahead, I will not.

I do not like it when a developer insults me, plain and simple. And I will not support said developer.

What on earth are you talking about?

Yea, hover in the air melee combat, parallel universe fighting, ground falling away to herd the player.

They're not exactly typical western gameplay tropes. Infact all of them bring Bayonetta to mind.

Listen, don't buy the game if you don't want. But don't pretend your reasoning is any thing other than fan rage. As a game, it looks fun.

The difference in trailers can be summed up to personal opinion. I think it looks awfully cliche, personally. Even with your argument, it's saying that a new game in 2012 is trying to keep up with a game that came out 3 years ago (The lead designer of DMC came out and said that he was competing with Bayonetta)... Now that's really moving the industry forward, right there.

Anyway, I actually don't really care about DMC all that much, hell, the only DMC game I've ever played before this is 3, and that was on and off. I just don't like the people creating it that are acting like assholes to their consumers, that's the only thing that gets me upset about this whole thing. That's the same reason I refuse to by Twisted Metal, or any game that EA ever puts out these days.

Anyway, I guess it just comes down to agreeing to disagree. Have fun, and I hope that you enjoy the game.
