Gabe Newell Says Steam Hack Is Worse Than Expected Pages 1 2 3 4 5 6 NEXT
It was bound to happen eventually, but it's nice to see they told people quickly (it's a good idea, internet companies!) and gave them details. Hopefully Steam Guard holds up.
Free copies of Portal 2 for everyone effected! Well, probably too much to hope for. Free commemorative TF2 hats!!!1one w00t!
Well shit. I had to cancel my debit card once already after the PSN situation. Rather not have to do it again.
i don't use the forums so I'm not concerned yet, I'll wait for the word on Steam accounts before taking any harsh action
This Steam guard better do what it says. And if they get by that, well I have no info on my account. Pre-paid cards FTW! Still changed my password. Just to be safe.
is it standard that steam forgot my cc info?
Assuming you don't save your card info when you make purchases it should be alright. OT: Steam account password changed. No idea if I have a forum account or not, but if it was the same password its not anymore.
Ok, i'm freaking out right now!!! I never use the forums but theres a chance it could affaect my account right? Also... why hack Steam? i acctually don't get it... it's user friendly for the community, it has loads of promotions, its good to use... Is there any kind of corporate corruption going on, or is this a statment of "WE WANT HL3 NOW" awfully performed?
If it's that bad, Steam Guard still has my back. Edit: found the source
Actually I tend to do that. I make steam purchases rather frequently so it started to become a right cunt putting in the information again and again and again....
I feel ya, brah!!!!! worried as shit right now!!!! If GABEN manages to save my bank account from haxors, i'll buy VALVE complete pack (most of the games for the 2nd time) as soon as this mess is over :P
Is this why I can't play TF2? or is that a seperate problem?
It's great that this a personal apology from Gabe too and not some corporate "we are sorry for whatever" type deal.
I'm glad they told us right away. I transferred all of my money to another account until they get this sorted out, just to be on the safe side.
Good thing I don't buy games on Steam, so I never put in credit card information.
I don't think I've ever used the steam forums, but hey, might as well change my password anyway. And delete my card information, while I'm there. Nice to know we still have that possibility.
Some people are dicks. Some people can properly handle power. Give dicks power, and they will super dick everything up for shits and giggles. Savvy?
I'm not stressed. My debit account rarely has more than a dollar in it, so theres not much there to take. XD That said, a change of passwords and keeping an eye on my balance will be in order.
I can't even remember what my steam account password was, and I didn't have any personal information beyond my e-mail anyway. turns out its a good thing my computer is so crappy it can't play steam.
Well, between Valve's own security measures and the fact that my account is covered by Steam Guard, I feel rather safe. That said, I'm still going to be changing the damn password and watching my online statement. This, ladies and gentlemen, is why we can't have nice things.
"I got hacked and all I got was this lousy T-shirt" misc tf2 item, no doubt shall be what we get for this one.
WHat part of "because they're pricks" escapes you? Who the hell ever thinks a hacker is justifiable? Same reason for the Sony hack, because they are complete pricks.
At least he's not pulling a Sony. Because you know he's actually telling people about it.
Think how many Steam users will have their credit card info stored on file. Not every hack is to make a statement or to stick it to the man.
Does this affect Paypal users as well?
*obligatory WHERE IS EPISODE 3?! joke* OT: I'm not really worried, I never used the Steam Forums. So whatever, just so long as NOTHING goes wrong tomorrowind. ... I typed that last bit instinctively :P
So let's see: - I don't have a forum account Anything else left? All they might have taken from me my e-mail address, but I don't use the same password for anything. That and billing info if steam saves that info somewhere anyway. I know no info is released yet and I know I'm being paranoid, but fuck it. I am not taking any chances. Not after that Sony fiasco.
I am going to have to quote this, somewhere, some time. Pure awesomeness. OT: I don't use the forum. Still changed my password. Sounds a lot like everyone else on this topic (I wonder why...).
but it'll be a hat :P well, even though I maybe made 30 posts in the 2 or 3 years I had it, I'm not worrying. also, those pre-paid credit cards are pretty handy!
Right I'm downloading everything I haven't downloaded already. If everyone loses their account Valve may release those unlock codes they say they keep in case of bankruptcy.
This isnt about lulzsec or their ilk this is about one thing, money. After what lulzsec did it wouldnt be long before organised crims saw the oppertunity and got hacking.
Probably not, unless your paypal password and email are the same as the ones from the forum, and possibly your steam account. Unless there's a setting I've missed, I've always had to enter a password for paypal. Steam Guard FTW!
Because it says it's secure. That's all the hackers need to see. As has been said, Gabe has actually said sorry. Even if he doesn't mean it, (and I'm damn sure he does...this hurts him more) it's still way better than any other the other responses we've had from hacked people. The forums are mostly separate from the actual accounts, so there is a small chance they could get through, but Gabe et. al are gonna be watching for the first signs like a hawk. Remember, they're gonna have to recompense if hacks start happening, it's just good business sense for them to protect their clients. Something Sony only thought of after the hacks happened.
Never used the forums, but just changed everything regardless. All I can do now is keep an eye on my statements. Ugh, this is the last thing I need right now.

Gabe Newell Says Steam Hack Is Worse Than Expected
Valve honcho Gabe Newell says the Steam forum hack is worse than it first appeared and that it's time for everyone to change their passwords.
It appears that the Steam forum hack that went down earlier this week is more serious than originally thought. A message from Gabe Newell was just sent out to users warning that the attackers got into Steam proper and suggesting that this might be a good time for a password change.
Valve's reaction stands in stark contrast to the lengthy silence and promises of "no harm done" that came out of Sony in the wake of the PlayStation Network hack. On the other hand, Gabe and company have the benefit of someone else's experience; the PSN debacle is a straight-up blueprint for exactly how not to handle situations like this.
We'll let you know if anything else develops.
