Say Hello to Baby Dovahkiin

I would agree that this is mean.... But honestly, how many bullies will actually know the dragon name for the main character in Skyrim in 5 years?

to nerds, he will be a god. to bullies, he'll be a punching bag

My middle name was almost Dunottar so im actually backing these parents up. Still better than those white supremacists who named their kinds "white power" and "hitler".

And hell being bullied happens to kids with normal names too, so really whatever.

Veldt Falsetto:
He's more than likely gonna be known as Tom anyway seeing as Dovahkiin is just Dragonborn. It's like a title like Doctor or something, think of it that way and it's awesome!

I'll swap him! My name is Tom, he can have it.

Really, who the fuck named me Thomas?
Yes, it's pronounced T-om-ass
Not Th-om-ass.

Now, rename me Dovahkiin, or I will shout you off my balcony!

Guys. Guys. This can be used for his advantage.

"Dad, why did you call me Dovahkiin?"
"Son, we named you after a brave hero. I learnt this story from a game around 5 years ago. He started from humble beginnings, in the long lost land of Skyrim. And, it was only near his death, that he realized his own fate..."

Dad then tell him the story of Skyrim, Happy End included. Little Dovah goes to school.
"Dovahkiin? What sort of name is that?"
"It means "Dragonborn". It was the name of a great hero!" Dovah tells enquirer the epic story of the Dragonborn.

Hell, any name can be used by kids to make fun of other kids. And if not their names, the things they say or do. It would happen anyway. Dovah's just gotta pull through it. We all have to.

I agree.

For the talent show he can sing the Skyrim theme, Tobuscus' Literal Trailer and do a play about him shouting things off cliffs!

SteelStallion:
Wait, what is with the bully posts? Why would he be bullied?

By the time he gets to kindergarden, 4-5 years will have passed. 4-5 year olds don't play Skyrim and they'll think it's a Serbian name or something. "Dovahkiin" is exotic, but it isn't something like naming your kid "Megatron" or "Darth Vader".

When he gets to Elementary school, kids still won't be playing Skyrim. I doubt people in grades 2-6 would play an old RPG they'll probably never have heard of.

When he gets to Highschool, Skyrim will be so far behind him that only a few hardcore RPG enthusiasts/nerds will give him a wink or a nudge and talk about how cool it is. While everyone else just knows him as "That kid who sounds like he's from Serbia". I don't see any of the logic you guys are presenting, he's not going to be bullied at all.

Furthermore, people criticizing the parents think they're doing this for the free swag. They're not, they're probably doing it because they're diehard fans.

It's no different than having a video game themed wedding or investing geek culture into any other part of your life. Although this is a bit extreme.

I don't think the bullying is important. The reasoning behind the name and the attitude of his parents is a worse problem.

Luckiest.
Child.
Ever.
I'm so jealous.

Yeah, the bullying as a kid and the weird looks whenever he does anything official (job appliactions, legal documents, passport control, bank accounts, etc.) for the rest of his life is really gonna be a whale of a time.

Why make his first name Dovahkiin?
It was just to name the kid it. Not necessarily the first name. You could have made any of his middle names it..

But now, he is Dovahkiin.
Thanks alot, mom and dad.

THIS! I feel horrible for him when he hits school. Well on the bright side he can shoout the bully off a mountian.

I got shit in school for being named Remington...I fell for this kid. You're gonna need those keys for the future games.

Hope you look forward to all the awkward looks and mispronunciations kid! Be glad mommy and daddy got their games! Honestly, were they not thinking of what this might mean for the child? I mean hell, having a name like that is just asking for trouble, not to mention how is the kid going to feel knowing that he was "named so mommy and daddy could have free games?" I sincerely hope, for the kids sake, they at least refer to him by his middle name.

Why hello there little Dovahkiin. I am sure you will slay many dragons when you grow up. And be quite the noisy baby no doubt. HA HA HA!

In all serious though, they probably should have made that his middle name. I guess he could still go by Tom though if he wants.

Still, while Dovahkiin is no doubt an odd name, it isn't exactly 'lame'. I mean, it does sound pretty exotic and cool. Will be hard as hell for the poor kid learning to say and spell it though.

Who else actually WANTS to be named Dovahkiin?

Okay, seriously guys, I really don't get why everyone is saying how horrible this is for the kid. Dovahkiin is an awesome name! Sounds russianese or something. Shorten it to Dovah, Kin, Dov, Kane maybe, or just call him by his last name or hell just go all out and call him Dragon-Born.

I really don't see the horribleness of all this, there are certainly worse names to give your kid like "Fucker" or "Hitler".

Not nearly as bad as you make it out to be

The "Tom" got me thinking of Voldemort so I ran that mess of a name through an anagram program. The result?

I'm very like the Dalek moron.

This kid is screwed.

The main bad thing is that their motivation for naming the kid was free games. It is basically like naming him Pepsi to get an endorsement deal.

This child shall be the best kid ever, of all time.
I can't believe someone actually did this but I am SUPER glad someone did!

Changing you name is as easy as buying a hotdog these days so i'm sure he'll be fine. (A 30 hotdog)

I doubt he'll get as much flak as people are saying...The kids he grows up will forget about the game or won't even know it. And no one gets made fun of for having a weird name these days considering how many immigrants we have that have non-american names. Hell I know so many Djaksaputras, Siddarthas, Qiangweis and Hanazawas I don't think those names are strange at all...

That is unless he grows up with a bunch of hicks. Which I doubt.

Its an awesome name. If he's bullied, he'll just shout at them till they stop.

I hope his first words are Fuss Ro Dah

K4RN4GE911:
Seriously, being named Dovahkin isn't all that bad. Sure, it's a bit different and some thick headed people are gonna pick on him, but it's better than being named after a car. (coughMercedescough)

The car (or more precisely the brand) was named after some guy's daughter.

saruman31:

poiumty:
Dohvakiin Kellermeyer. That's a tongue-twister if I ever heard one.

"Yeah, it's spelled d-o-h-v-a-k-i-i-n. Yeah, it's the name of a hero from some 20 year old video game. I know it sounds stupid, sir. What do you mean you can't give me the job."

Jobs are not given or not because of a name. Your looks, attitude and C.V. are the ones that matter.
As a poster said above, people will think its a russian name.

They are SO given because of a name. My cousin Batman bin Suparman is president of Microsoft. You are wrong and you should feel wrong.

Rem45:
I got shit in school for being named Remington...I fell for this kid. You're gonna need those keys for the future games.

You're named after a gun manufacturer? Why the hell would people bag on you , then?

Ah well, guess it's better than naming your children after the cars they were conceived in.

Damn, got ninja'd.

This kid is going to grow up being awesome. Besides, people have been named far more nerdily.

Like Mr Batman.

Hmmmm.... naming my child something that ensures them constant hardship throughout their entire life, at the reward of some free video games... HELL YEAH!!!
I can just see the look on that guys face when he grows up and asks "Mom, Dad, why did you name me Dovahkiin?"

Guys, just because it's his first name it doesn't mean he's going to be bullied. My girlfriend has an 'old lady's' first name, so she just went with her middle name. Didn't have any problems. I severely doubt that they won't just call him Tom. Hell, one of my friends in high school was named Maverick because his parents were immigrants and didn't understand English naming. The result? Completely badass name.

Dfskelleton:

I can just see the look on that guys face when he grows up and asks "Mom, Dad, why did you name me Dovahkiin?"

Well when he's young they can just tell him that he's 'dragon born'. I mean, if I thought my dad was a dragon when I was eight that would've been awesome.

SteelStallion:

My guess, is there are some here who got bullied for what they view as less petty reasons and they want the kid to get the same treatment. Fact is, there are no nonpetty reasons for being bullied or to bully someone. It is nothing but insecurity on the part of the bully, who needs some better social adjustment.
Maybe once we get over the part where we expect some nerd, dork, skinny or fat kid, or whatever is should be bullied, maybe then we can realize there is no room for bullying.

Frankly, I think it is a rather cool name, and I don't care it was inspired by a videogame. So what? How many people in the Escapist community have a name that their parents given them because it was inspired by a movie, a book, a song? Are you going to stand by and laugh as someone picks on someone called Hermione, Sam, or Kirk? Of course not. This is part of the argument that games should be accepted as part of the rest of art and literature. How many here try to support that argument but instead in this thread automatically assumed this kid was going to be bullied? If that fits you, then you need to take some time and figure out what it is you are trying to support here. Otherwise you have no place to argue when some senator or school board member tries to suppress games in art culture.
Leave your insecurities at the door, people. It is time for a brave new world, and if you can't handle the light, then leave here and stay in the dark.

theriddlen:
Well, everyone is going to call him Tom anyway, so it's not this much of a deal. And if someone sees that his first name is Dovahkiin they'll just think it's Russian.

Or he can politely explain that he is a dragon.

It isn't that unusual sounding of a name. Just sounds like a Paki name or something. It's not something that will get him bullied. At least where I come from it wouldn't be.

SomeLameStuff:

Aaand...we've officially found someone who can actually say the phrase 'I'm Batman!' in all seriousness. Seriously, that is all kinds of awesome.

Kids are incredibly cruel, I know from personal experience they will seize on any and every aspect to rip into you about. In this situation the name is a boon, not only does it give the little bastards a big target that he can not care about them focusing on, but it will forever give him an air of mystery and at worst a really, really awesome name. These aren't bad parents, especially if you compare this to what some parents name their child because they genuinely think it's a good idea.

I don't think that this will have that bad of an impact on the kid. It's a bit silly, sure, but there are far worse things to be named. And at least he will never have another kid with the same name as him in class. Unless...

...........................FUCK!!! DID THIS ACTUALLY HAPPEN? FOR THE LOVE OF G-D PEOPLE, ITS A CHILD, NOT A FUCKING PET YOU CAN TREAT LIKE YOUR LITTLE TICKET TO FILLING OUT YOUR NERD FANTASIES!!!
