Final Fantasy developer Yoshinori Kitase says if he were to remake Final Fantasy VII, he'd be tempted to switch things up, "delete things" and add "new elements."
It's that time of year again, folks. The time when the ghost of Final Fantasy VII rises from its grave and starts rattling its chains at us, demanding a remake and generally being a nuisance. In an interview with OXM, Final Fantasy VII director and scenario planner Yoshinori Kitase talked about how he would approach a potential remake of the much-loved JRPG. Purely in hypothetical terms, you understand.
"If I may speak as a game creator, if we were to produce a remake of 7, for example, I would be really tempted to delete things and add new elements, new systems or whatever because if we were to make exactly the same thing now, it'd be like a repeat," he said. "It'd be an issue of repetition and not as much fun to make such a game. So I'd be really interested in rearranging games or reshaping games into something slightly different even though it's supposed to be the same game."
"When we play the games we made years ago, sometimes we think 'oh, that is not really cool' or 'that probably should have been a bit better than that' and that sort of thing," he continued. Despite its reputation for excellence, FFVII had its fair share of issues, particularly the slightly goofy translation.
"But on the other hand, those slightly negative features and bits, for some of the really enthusiastic fans of these titles, that gives the game extra flavour or personality or whatever. So maybe they would rather we didn't do anything about it and we just leave it in as it is. It's very difficult to decide what we should we keep in and what we should take out."
He recognizes that any changes made to the game, presumably exempting more absurdly vertical fight scenes, would inspire insane, animal rage in long-term fans. "If we did that, the fans might be disappointed or 'this is not what I was expecting' so in that sense maybe some might say that it's better to let memory be memory," he said.
Personally, I'm choosing to interpret that last quote as a warning. Essentially: 'Stop asking! Stop it! Stop it, or I'll put Goofy in it, so help me God.'
Amongst myself and my friends this has been a topic that came and died a long, long time ago. Honestly I'm in favour of a re-make and also in favour of them adapting the story, game play and designs to fit with a modern series of systems and I believe most fans of the original would agree on this too. There is so much more that can now be done since 7 was released and, I think, no body wants the exactly the same game - we all have owned [and/or re-purchased] at least 7 copies of the original. Any thing that wasn't new would not see my money.
They really, REALLY need to stop being wet bum rags and get a new pair of shiny brass balls and face facts - giving the public what they want is not a crime. Final Fantasy 13, with all of it's FF7 "inspiration" however, is [ugh. What a slap in the face that was!].
If they make it, we will come. And finally, FINALLY shut they Hell up about it.
You know, if they wanted to re-interpret a bit to make it more interesting for the Dev team I think that would be great. Don't get me wrong, FFVII was a amazing game, but I would like to see how they believe they might improve an already great game. This may turn out poorly but the flip-side is also possible.
OutrageousEmu: But the remakes are. The FFX remake proves that.
And if they were talking about FFX, that would make sense.
I believe that the FFX deal is that it is not a remake but a re-release in HD. However I could be wrong.
It is, but outrageousemu is under the delusion that it's somehow wrong that a disussion about remaking FF7, a game, as far as we know, that is not currently being made, was in an Xbox magazine.
OutrageousEmu: ...why is he talking about it with an Xbox magazine?
Because he's a rational human being who doesn't see his favorite console as a "side" in some kind of "war" for market dominance, and also that whether it's gaming press sponsored by Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo, it's still gaming press and will reach the masses either way.
Anyway... I'd prefer a remake of V for the 3DS in the vein of the III and IV remakes on DS than a VII remake. The Compilation materials are all the proof I need that a full-3D remake of VII would not be a good idea in the hands of present Square Enix.
GeeksUtopia: umm correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't a remake of final fantasy VII mentioned a while ago?
A remake of this game gets brought up on probably a monthly if not a daily basis. It's a curiosity as the thing would print money if they did a HD remake without touching anything.
And if they were talking about FFX, that would make sense.

I didn't say it was wrong, I asked under what context it came up. You inferred that there is something wrong with that.

I have no problem with them changing the gameplay or even the story because I've already played the other game giving itg shinier graphics doesn't do anything for me, I'd much rather see the game in a new light.
We're going off topic here so lets leave dead horses to flog themselves, eh?
In fact, I'm so bored of this topic - the whole Final Fantasy 7 remake thing, that I just don't care any more. I'm gone. Out the loop. No more talky for me.
RoseArch: As long as we can still have him be nekkid in a tub filled with fat, sweaty bikers and have him dress up like a girl, I'm cool with any changes.
It'd be interesting to see FF7 with the graphics it should've had in the first place.
The lego brick hand thing was cool at the time (it was their first time straying away from the grid based map/sprite system to 3D, give em a break) but then when you see FF8 or 9... you can tell the graphics didn't quite live up to the potential of the hardware.
Remake the game with better graphics and change NOTHING, the game was a master peice, FF7 may not be in my top 5 all time games but it makes the top ten. You know what I hated about FF8, 9 and 10? They were nothing like FF7 they changed to much, now I'm all for change where change is needed, but don't fix what ain't broke guys.

See you later. Or not.
and yet you read the article the moment you saw it and commented on this tread about it and say you don't care.. hilarious. i love the internet and it's quazy contradictions

the game WAS a masterpiece.... for it's time. The industry evovled... the way to tell a story evolved. There is nothing wrong with playing to nostalgia, but if they do do this(which i know they won't even being an ff7 fanboy myself) they would have to change it to a huge degree. I also get the feeling that the Versus 13 project(when ever the hell it comes out been in development since 2002-2003)will change many people's look on what should and should not be in an ff game. well that and type O
