MMO "Unlaunched"

Glitch, the bizarre world-building MMO from Keita Takahashi, the man behind the utterly mental Noby Noby Boy and Katamari Damacy, has been "unlaunched" after two months of release.

The game was returned to a beta state not because of glitches, which would have made for a spectacularly wry headline that would have amused you for all of half a second, but because it was missing important features.

"There are two obvious and huge improvements we need to make: the first is to make the early game reveal itself more easily to new players so they can get into the fun faster," wrote Tiny Speck's Stewart Butterfield. "The second and larger task is to give those players who have gotten over that initial hump and fallen in love with the game - spending dozens or even hundreds of hours playing - the creative tools that they need to change the world in more tangible ways: building whole new locations themselves, designing new buildings, setting up resource flows and forming flexible organizations to create bigger things together."

Apparently, the team had hoped to add features and fix issues over time, as many MMOs are wont to do these days, but that proved difficult. "Making radical changes to core game mechanics is something that's a lot harder to do while the front doors are open," Butterfield continued.

The game is still playable in its Beta state, though the development team may be slow to fix "non-critical bugs." Any player who has spent money on the game's premium content can claim a full refund via the game's official site. There's no information on when the game will be relaunched.

For those who haven't heard of Glitch - and I admit, it managed to slip under my radar completely - it's a world-building MMO that takes place in the minds of "eleven peculiarly imaginative giants." Just check out the distinctly unsettling trailer at the top right there.

I think it has slipped under everyones radar as I have no idea what you are talking about. Guess that is why it was so easy to unlaunch it!

Well, that's weird.

I don't mean the story. I mean everything in that video.

Honestly? The trailer wasn't nearly as weird or psychadelic as I was hoping.

Well.. It doesnt look its that great a game, but the song was awesome.

The crows and weird-ass Cthulhu monster doesn't do it for you?

Honestly, the article's title was weird. I like.

Made by the guys from Katamari Damancy?

What, did they run out of acid and realized that they had released by accident?

I hope this game turns out to be half as cool as that trailer.

Was that GLaDOS' aunt doing the narration?

I've been playing the game for a while and I was freaked out by the trailer too, but it's not even half as wierd as the trailer makes it look.

The game plays entirely on your browser, you don't need to download anything, it uses Flash, it has a 2D perspective, comparable to MapleStory and the gameplay itself is simple enough. You don't kill things, instead, you "create" things, instead of sending them into oblivion.

Sometimes the game is kinda trippy, but it's quite fun nonetheless.

Also, what's not to love about a game where you need to stroke 5 pigs instead of killing 20 rats?.

This seems to be happening a lot lately.

The Cthulu monsters are pretty standard for the internet at this point. Hardly creepy though since they're drawn up in that same style as farmville and it's ilk. The crows are a bit unsettling, but without having looked further at the game they're probably meant to hint at the conflict they've developed for the game. After all, not every thought you have is a good thought.

This looks like FarmVille, on EVERY DRUG, EVER.

So yeah, probably better than FarmVille.

After watching that vid... I doubt anyone does...

Wonder how many people were playing this.

Depends. Was it consensual?

This man and his development team are clearly insane. I refuse to believe it wasn't unlaunched intentionally, just to be bizarre.

That video... what?

Did someone swap out my meds for a hallucinogen again?

I probably shouldn't be laughing so hard at this, but I think my sanity was permanently damaged by that video.

Why do the giants all look like Shoggoths on crack?

Doesn't look so weird to me, It looks like a particularly happy maplestory.

If you think i'm saying that because it's 2D. It is.

I was a beta tester for this game, and had a blast. I'm glad they're adding all those new features. Unfortunately, I haven't been on in a couple weeks. Last time this tree started whispering to me about "Who's winning? The Giants, I mean..."
Weird conversation. So I ate a sammich and milked some butterflies.

Exactly, I understood everything before everyone, and yes I'm bit of a hipster.

Quick drink a sanity potion or get into light or try to make progress.

Looks cool, but not being able to BUILD which was the point of the game seems sorta odd.

I never heard of it, yet I am devastated. I'm still trying to figure out Noby Noby Boy...*

*had it since it came out

What, did they run out of acid and realized that they had released by accident?

I was thinking that someone probably brought regular mushrooms into the office one day and they all had a brief moment of clarity.

I can't believe I missed this. I'm a huge Katamari fan.

Well. THAT was an acid trip. A trailer like no other I've seen and I can't decide if that was good or bad.

My eyes won't stop twiching and they burn but I can't look away!

I've seen this video pop up a few times in stories related to the game, and the only reason I remember the game at all is because if this freaking trippy-ass trailer. So, I guess, mission successful for the trailer, then.

But one thing I've always wondered: has anyone ever caught the names of any of those giants from the song? I got Spriggan, and that's the only one I'm sure about. I'm pretty sure I also heard Elf and Mab?

So I found the Glitch wiki and apparently they are as follows: Humbaba, Friendly (yeah, the freaky black spider-bat thing is called "Friendly" and is apparently the "god of friendship."), Alph, Tii, Zille, Lem, Grendaline, Spriggan, Cosma, Pot (whose followers are, of course, occasionally referred to as "potheads." Thank you, Internet), and Mab.

Looking at this wiki, I have to say I dig how the skills are named in this game. They seem to either be named like college courses--soil appreciation, meditative arts--or are just creatively goofy--"croppery" for farming, "transcendental radiation" for meditation that benefits not just you but those around you.

Finally someone took my idea of basing a game around acid and made it real...sort of

I like the aesthetics, doesn't look like a game I'd enjoy though.
It must suck for the developers to have to 'unlaunch' their game like that.
Also, why does every second interesting concept always have comments about doing drugs?

Wait, did I really see a skill called "soil appreciation?"

Looks like somebody tweaked out on PCP and went on a Pop-Tropica bender...and made this as a result.

Huh. I might have to give this game a go. It completely flew under my radar. Also I don't know about anyone else, but that song is going to be stuck in my head.

And that's what this game is...you're inside their thoughts...go and make them bigger

not quite sure what i just watched... but i want it

also..the song scares me :S

I've played Glitch for a few weeks, and I really enjoy it. The entire game is quirky, mildly inappropriate humor, sarcasm, etc. The entire game functions around cooperation which is great -- and there's is no combat. I've been really looking for a game without combat that stops taking the "easy" way out when designing a game (note the quotes around easy).

Who needs Drugs when you got the Internet... I mean really
