Valve: There Is No Half-Life 3

OP is right, the chase is growing hot.

I don't think Valve knows how to end the series.

I don't know why anyone gets disappointed anymore, they're probably not working on HL3 or on it directly. If anything they're probably working on a new engine before then, or for the game specifically.

Seriously it's out when it's out.

Sgt. Sykes:
You know, waiting for HL2 for 6 years was... kinda funny.

This isn't funny anymore.

But right, who needs a new shooter these days. Not us, not really, and certainly not Valve, with their STEAMroller of money machine.

Someone should just write a book to make the whole HL story coherent. Then make a movie. Done. Screw the games.

that is actually not a bad idea :D

I still believe HL3 is coming. Especially after reading this article. It's definitely in the making. He didn't deny the existence of a HL3, only that there is nothing to be leaked. And why else would they tease us with the Borealis in Portal 2?
I just hope the game comes out before the world ends in December 2012... :P

HAHA nice try Valve but we're on to you. We KNOW you're up to something. You just don't want people to know you're making a game. Yes. YOU WANT IT ALL FOR YOURSELF

People put as much effort into interpretting made up bullshit numbers in Portal 2 as they did for the 9/11 conspiracies. Not sure if that's depressing or if those people who came up with the numbers for both things are just massive trolls.

People thinking this time gap is extreme obviously weren't around for the time gap between HL1 and HL2, or the development time of TF2.

Respect to Valve for keeping shut for so long. They got high QA (if their dev cycle is long - I don't count L4D2 or TF2 updates since Polycount), experiment a lot, and a horror game needs mystery to catch the player off guard.

All this conspiratorial stuff for a pew-pew shoot people game...I can't help but giggle when I look at it that way.

I loved Half Life 2, but I simply can't be arsed to care anymore. I probably will once something is announced, but there's no way anything they make will be 8+ years worth of awesome.

MiracleOfSound:
Sigh. I really hope HL3 doesn't go the way of Duke. After all this build up now I really doubt it can live up to my hopes.

Well it sort of HAS gone the way of Duke Nukem. Fans have a capacity for self-delusion and conspiracy that leaves the theoretical and enters...the bullshit.

OT; I hate to say "I told you so," but...oh, fuck it. Told you all it aint coming out. Its just another vaporware title. I find it amusing to see the people who hold Gabe Newell as the Jesus Christ of modern gaming desperately clutch at smoke for more updates when the trust is very obvious; the game is NOT COMING OUT, because Valve are making way too much off TF2 and Steam to give a shit about their complaints.

Maybe if they began to hit the pursestrings, they could be reminded of who Valve is shafting. But they won't. Instead it will be more complaining, more mind-boggling and rubbish theories, and more trolling. That's just how people are.

"Chetf from Valve"

Really?. I'd like my news posting guy posting some PC news to at least know who some of the important people of Valve are.

You will only ever truly appreciate HL2 if you played it anywhere near its release. For its time it was absolutely mindblowing. Everything else is/has ripped it off and it is slowly becoming interesting as people are playing the rip offs before the original, so its originality is lost. Happens with most great pieces of media art.

Erm hello Episode 2 came out in October of 2007 and it's just about to turn 2012, that's still less than 5 years, not this 8 years you've claimed it's been since we last had any half-life (though granted thats still a long time to wait for 'episodic' content). Oh and your news headline "Valve: There is no Half-life 3" is manipulatively misleading, it implies that valve is stating half-life 3 doesn't exist, which we all know isn't true. I know, I know, you're a journalist (of sorts) and its only in your nature to be manipulative and misleading but that doesn't make it a good thing. Please don't use such insipid and shallow tactics just so the story can get more 'hits'.

What buildup? All the hype has been purely from the fans. I honestly think Valve are just sitting there waiting to see how long the community will go on trolling their selves before everyone either stops caring or dies of old age.

THANK HOLY MOTHER OF NON-EXCISTENT ZOMBIE JESUS BABY! SOMEONE GETS IT, SOMEONE FINALLY GETS IT! [sorry for offense anyone, but that is worth the use of this phrase.]

Vulpis:
As some people I know about have pointed out...who needs HL3? What we want is *Episode* 3, which is not the same thing...and which nothing at *all* one way or another was said about.

It is the same thing. Half Life 2 episode 2 sucked or Half Life Episode 1, whichever one gave you the gravity gun that could pick up enemies and fling them at each other romantically. Its the same bloody thing, just one is about 2 or so hours and the other is 7 or so hours. Do you really want the next half life to be 2 or so hours long?

Seriously Half Life fans, stop trolling yourselves, hell, MAKE IT YOURSELVES! I'm being serious, isn't the next bit just going to be them going to the borealis, that shouldn't be too hard to make. I mean why the hell not?

AlternatePFG:
I still think that Valve is just waiting to make Source 2 or whatever their next major engine upgrade will be called before announcing Half Life 3.

Probably, that was one of the major pushes of Half Life 2, was the Source engine.

CaptOfSerenity:
I don't think Valve knows how to end the series.

Alright, heres how it will probably go down if they head for Borealis. 70% vehicle section there, then 10% puzzle, then 20% combat. Once there is 80% combat and 20% puzzle.

The plot will probably involve someone or something happening to someone like Barney who they then have to go save at the half way point. The begging is just getting there, and the end is just a massacre. Seriously, thats all it really needs to be, as long as writings good. Its not that they don't how to end a saga, its just their waiting for the next engine, since, remember when Half Life 2 came out and had physic based puzzles. Yeah, thats probably when Half Life 3 comes out is when the next engine is ready.

...Like that'll keep people from looking for signs, considering how desperate they are... maybe if Valve'd just come out and say there's gonna be a Half Life 3...

Already has. I stopped caring after HL2 EP2 came out. Valve is making so much money with TF2 and Steam, that people need to realize that we'll probably never see another Half life game ever again. Want half life 3? Mod it! Make it yourself! We do have Gmod and the ability to make our own levels! Why hasn't someone made a fan-made HL3 mod yet?

Imma feed you :) have a cookie you deserve it.

any way, When I saw this thread I thought it was saying that valve announced there would be no half life 3. I'm glad this is not the case, wish escapist news writers would stop pulling this crap.

You guys haven't figured it out yet? They're skipping Half-Life 3 and going straight for number 4. It's quite obvious if you look at all the data.

I'm a believer.

I'm naive.

I still believe that there will be a Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Or a Half-Life 3. I know.

Whether it'll be good or not is another debate entirely.

Lets face it everyone, there is not going to be another Half-Life game. It has now become VALVe's Duke Nukem. It pains me to say this, since I used to be a huge Half-Life fan, but after this many years only having a couple of concept images and some ideas from 2007, I really don't think this game is going to happen.

Also, let's not forget what John Patrick Lowrie (who voices the rebels in the Half-Life 2 games) said: "Ellen McLain [his wife] and I haven't heard anything about a new Half Life episode. Wish I had better news for you. I would love to do another episode."

So yeah, after this long, I'm calling it dead and/or irrelevant.

RIP Half-Life 2: Episode Three

Someone actually made a miniature Half-Life 2: Episode Three mod for Episode Two. It was several levels long and had you enter the Borealis and set off a bomb to blow it up. Not very well made, but it was nice enough. Certainly more than VALVe had done.

Here's a video of the first part.

Dont you know that valve cant count to 3

Dont you know that valve cant count to 3

Considering that the company is already planning the voice work for Half Life 4, which is set to be released in 2014 I think, that might actually be the case!

That is a really really misleading headline Escapist, come on, you're better than that.

As for the announcement - yeah it was pretty obvious that it was all from starved fans who wanted something to get excited about. Valve have been pretty poor towards their fans with this with a 100% close-down on any information whatsoever and it's been quite a long time now. People are losing interest and to be honest I think they're going to just abandon the thing as vaporware, put unrealistic expectations on it and ultimately be disappointed when it doesn't live up to the idealisation.

Gah what am I kidding, it's Valve, I'm sure it'll be a matter of "all is forgiven" when the first official teaser or whatever is released.

Oh Jesus tap dancing Christ, are people still on about this?

I hope you aren't hinting that HL3 will go the way of Duke as in "vaporware and shit" rather than just "vaporware".

You leave your game sitting on the cooler for half a decade and see how good it is.

That's a good point, but the problem with that is Duke was still worked on over that 14 years. It was passed from dev to dev, yes, but nonetheless, each dev was still doing something to further the development of the game.

Besides, it was 6 years between the release of HL1 and HL2, so half a decade isn't really anything to fret about. It's a long time by today's standards because of all the 1 or 2 year development times for various games and their sequels being put out these days. That's just my opinion anyways; I really don't think this much time will kill Half-Life's quality, but I could be wrong.

I stopped caring a long time ago

AvauntVanguard:
Screw HL3. I want Episode 3.

Well, the blurb on HL2:E2's Steam store page says that it's "the second in a trilogy of new games created by Valve that extends the award-winning and best-selling Half-Life adventure". Technically, that means that any new entry in the series will be made. Whether it's an "Episode" or just "Half-Life 3" (with a new engine, considering how long it took), the blurb states that Half-Life will continue.

Or you could not believe it and be shocked once/if the ARG truly comes out.

You know, I like how I mentioned all of this possible ARG crap about a month ago, and NOW we're making a big deal out of it when it's on the front page.

Dunkerloop:
I think it'll just end up a full sequel instead of an episode, at this rate.

Er. Yes. They have stated so themselves.

OT: No ARG != No HL3. Or, if you're one of the nutters that actually follows this train of thought, this is part of the ARG as well. No offense to said nutters.

Gabe Newell was quoted this year as saying 'Of course we're still making it' and then asking people to be patient. So it it is being made. Sorry can't remember the source (it was on here as a news item though)

I hate to be that guy but eh...

CALLED IT!

I don't care how long it takes for the game to come out, I will still be happy even if it's just as big as one of the episodes.

Valve... Is no longer cool.

Wait, it wasn't cool before I said that. They've been uncool ever since they announced hl3 wouldn't come out just yet.
