Tails Leaps into Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2

Sega brand manager unveils the sidekick's return with some interesting facial hair.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a videogame icon that used to rank up there with Mario, Mega Man and chocobos. But after Sega's bubble burst in the late 90s and some serious missteps in the early 2000s (Shadow, anyone?) definitely tarnished the brand. Sega tried to get back up on the proverbial hedgehog this past year by switching to a format more conducive to impulse and nostalgia - the XBLA and PSN game Sonic the Hedgehog Episode 1. While the side-scrolling levels hearkened back to the series' roots, the physics felt a little off for hardcore fans. And there was a little something missing. Well, have no fear, because Sega's brand manager Ken Balough revealed that Episode 2 would not only feature a new engine, but also the return of the sidekick Tails.

We know this because Balough shaved and dyed his beard to look like Tails' orange and white fur. Yep, he is that devoted to his job. What did you do to your facial hair for work this week? That's what I thought.

"I was playing with the idea of 'how do I really communicate episode 2? and the love that we have for it,'" Balough said, gesturing at the animal tail on his face. "I thought this was an interesting and creative way to let our fans know that this is what awaits."

So yeah, Miles "Tails" Prower will appear in the new game. Tails debuted in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis, became a stalwart cast member of the series and even starred in few of his own titles (Tails' Skypatrol). Also, the villain will also be a returning character - Metal Sonic.

More than that, the physics and graphics engines are rebuilt and that was directly due to player feedback. "I want to reassure our fans that we listened," Balough said. "We are doing a lot of the things that fans requested. There's going to be a lot of really positive changes and we think the fans are going to be really happy.

Balough said that random uncurling when running uphill and sticking to walls will be fixed. "They may not sound like a big deal, but when you're playing Sonic and you're so used to the way the Genesis games felt, it's a big step to get closer to that Genesis feel."

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 will be out sometimes in 2012 for the download on Xbox Live and PSN, as well as mobile platforms like Android, Windows 7 Phone, and even iOS device. Yes, you will be able to play Sonic on your iPhone.

I hope the game plays better than that beard looks. Because...that is terrifying.

Physics being fixed that's all I wanted to hear. Because Sonic 4 my God I'd rather play Sonic Labyrinth.

I actually enjoyed Sonic 4: Episode 1. It's not great, especially not since playing Generations and Sonic CD, but I didn't think it was as bad as people said. That said, there's major room for improvement so these engine changes sound good to me. So long as the environments look better and the controls feel better then I'll be fine it, the copy-paste identical trees in Splash Hill were appalling.

I wonder how long before they change the Game's format over ALL the platforms to make it "easier to use at work"

I thought the idea of Sonic 4 was to go back to basics without the sidekicks.

that's pretty cool that he dyed his facial hair to match Tail's twin orange and white tipped fox tails.

I heard if you bought more then one copy of the last game they gave a discount on it? Will they do that for ep2??

If Sonic Colors and Generations are anything to go by, then the physics will be better implemented, or at least I hope so. I don't want to see Sonic Team ruin the good-will that they rightfully earned with Colors and Generations. The last thing they and the Sonic franchise needs is another Sonic 4 Episode 1 or a Sonic 2006.

Although I'm curious. If they actually are making a new physics engine for Episode 2, does that mean they'll eventually re-release Episode 1 with a new physics engine?

Cool :), I like playing as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles in the older games, Its only when things started to get ridiculous (fishing?) that it became too much.

The game will still keep its sense of speed, as long as that happens then I'm all good!

Hey, I like Shadow.

True, I'm fond of him because he is so gloomy, melodramatic and seriously written, but when it comes to Sonic, the retarded plots are part of why I like them.

They tend to be awful in a rather spectacular way. Unlike gameplay that's just awful in an awful way.

Also, that beard is really creepy. And if his beard is tails, what that makes his mouth?

I can't be the only one who thought of that...

First he shows up in the Sonic CD port, and now he's finally playable in a new game altogether, eh. Looks like Tails fans have spoken up. Now all they have to do is make him remotely aesthetically pleasing in-game again. It's only been about fifteen years.

I see what you're doing here though, Sega. Episode 3 & Knuckles is next, eh?

It better be, anyway. But please stop there with the new characters, if so. We beg you.

Hahaha, you fool! Why would anyone even trust what anyone says about that franchise anymore?

At this rate, Episode 4 would have knuckles, and Episode 5 would have Amy, Shadow, and whoever else (at this point, I don't care about names of the 50 magical furry squad)

Oh, and for fuck's sake, put Super Tails in.

THIS PLEASES ME.

Tails is my favorite character in the Sonic Franchise so YAY!

Also the fixed physics is a worthy of a few "Yay~"s as well.

what about Hyper Knuckles?? He needs some love as well

I hope the console versions use the Generations engine

I like how there's no Episode 3...

Why does everybody forget that shadow first featured in THIS game?:

IE, One of, if not THE best sonic games, and without a doubt the best 3d one.

It was sonic heros that was the start of the decline of the series, not SA2.

Also, on a related note:

Dear SEGA,

Please remake the rest of SA2, like you did with city escape in generations. Or shit, just release a chao garden game.

Sincerely: everybody.

Hey, at least you can say now that Sega is literally talking out of Tails' ass now.

...

And yes, once you see it, YOU CANNOT UNSEE IT!!

MUAHAHAHA!!!

As much as I like sonic and got hyped up for Sonic the Hedgehog Episode One I'm not really going to hype this one up.

I just hope Episode 2 is good and Sonic Generation gets some levels DLC. I'd Love that

PS. I think the Sonic cycle has been broken, Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, The handheld games on DS, Sonic Team has finally found something good to run with Sonic.

So now we know two things. SEGA is insane, and Episode two is actually coming out. Cool. Now when does the next Sonic rpg happen? Because I'm one of the seven people in the world that actually LIKED this thing.

I'm half-tempted to believe he works for a certain company, since there's no 3 to be found in his entire post.

3 days with no Valve joke about that post. How the hell did that happen?

This man speaks truth. Especially that last sentence.

(Good lord I miss the chao garden. One of the best pet simulators ever. I still visit my gardens occasionally.)

SA2, specifically its rerelease, SA2B, is one of the most enjoyable experiences of the gamecube/ps2/xbox generation. yeah I said it.

I like shadow too. He's no where near as gloomy, emo, etc. as countless other characters out there who have much bigger fanbases.

On topic, I am very pleased with this. Liked Sonic 4 well enough, but we're in agreement; it was no Sonic 3 & Knuckles. If episode 2 plays even remotely similar to the classic stages of Sonic Generations, we're golden.

I would go check on the chao, but I can't find my disk :(
