DOOM Rejoins XBLA Roster

The grandpappy of first-person shooters has returned to Xbox Live.

In October 2010, the Xbox Live Arcade version of id Software's classic demon-killin' simulator vanished from the service, with neither warning nor explanation. We still don't know exactly why the game was de-listed, though based on Microsoft's history of doing this sort of thing, one could easily assume that it was selling poorly and essentially just taking up space.

Other games, including Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Double Dragon have received the same fate, vanishing without warning, never to return.

Unlike those two however, DOOM has been revived. As of today, the game can be downloaded from the Xbox Live Marketplace for the totally-worth-it price of $5 (400 Microsoft Points).

Bethesda's official announcement of this whole thing offers no specific reason for the resurrection, leaving gaming journalists like myself to assume that even Microsoft is unable to stem the tide of demonic energy emanating from the classic series.

Remember when Tipper Gore warned that DOOM was evil? Yeah, she was totally right. And if I've learned anything from twenty years of Castlevania sequels, it's that you can't kill evil, you can only hope to seal it away for a while.

It's always weird to see these items de-listed, since there's no real practical reason. That's the reason they don't need to discount prices with time, after all: Titles aren't taking up valuable real estate in a store.

How does it come that the game is STILL region locked?

Before it vanished I just got the this "item is not available from your location" nonsense from Xbox live but for some reason I was allowed to download Doom 2 just fine. I was hoping that now that the game has appeared again that they would leave the whole region locking nonsense out since Doom 2 can be downloaded anyways. But no, I STIL get the "item is not available from your location crap".

This is so much crap :(

Do I have to buy this again? if so I am going to be a very angry panda.

Ah, Doom. Still love that game. Great fun, and a good source port only makes it better. Still play it on my PC sometimes. My original DOOM2.WAD, installed via five floppies and copied from PC to PC since, still works in new OSes thanks to source ports.

(And all my CAD experience I owe to DCK.)

Did she? She thought everything was evil. While everyone else thought SHE was evil. I mean, when you get John Denver and Dee Snider allied against you....
