Lawyer Blames Videogames For Synagogue Bombings

The attorney of a man accused of firebombing three synagogues in the U.S. says videogames may have "taken over" his client and driven him to commit the crimes.

It's been awhile since we had a good "games made me do it" story, so settle in and listen while I tell you the tale of 19-year-old Anthony Graziano, who stands accused of firebombing three synagogues in New Jersey. No one was seriously injured in the attacks but one of the incendiary devices thrown by Graziano went through the window of a rabbi's residence, burning him on the hand.

Speaking outside the court yesterday, Graziano's lawyer said his client suffered from mental health issues and played violent videogames on his Xbox. "This is someone who may [have been], with their own problems they have within their own head, taken over by these games that young people play now - lots of violence, lots of meanness," he said.

"When you have emotional, psychiatric, psychological problems and you get involved in these games, the whole aura of it pervades, and it's not a game anymore," he added. "It becomes reality."

But Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli doesn't appear to be buying into the theory. "We have no doubt that the arson and the attempted murder in Rutherford were directly the result of Mr. Graziano's hatred for people of the Jewish faith," he said. "We believe that he did this because they were synagogues and specifically to intimidate and cause alarm or concern to people of the Jewish community."

The police say Graziano acted alone and had no connection to the synagogues he attacked; he apparently just Googled temples that were close enough to reach on his bicycle. He faces charges of first-degree attempted murder, bias intimidation and aggravated arson, among other things, and is currently being held on $2.5 million bail.

Well, at the very least they are at acknowledging the guy has some mental issues instead of straight blaming video games. So it seems people might be smarting up a tad bit on it.

Still have to wonder how someone with mental issues was allowed to play these games. Generally anyone with mental issues should be monitored at least a little, and some things screened, and if someone has issues with keeping reality separate from fantasy, shouldn't of obviously been allowed near violent games in the first place.

Pretty obvious the lawyer was pulling things out of his ass to see if he could make them stick if that's the defence he went with, not as easy a target as he thought...

I doubt the lawyer even believes what he is saying. Looks like desperation to me.

Yeah, like video games assumed direct control of his body, implanted anti-Jewish thoughts into his psyche and made him burn those buildings down.

This is doubtlessly a hate crime.

Annnnnnnnnnnnd just like that, the lawyer loses. Video games wont be that type of scapegoat anymore.

Ok can anyone name a game that promotes active violence against the Jewish?

If not that whole argument is dead in the water.

I dont know its name, but extra credits once mentioned a neo nazi game.

OT: At least he addmited its only really because of underlying mental issues, so he gets some points at least.

Yes, it couldn't have anything to do with his religious views at all, because let's be honest, since when has religion caused the deaths of others right? This kind of thing just has to be video games, because they're a bad influence and are the devil.

Andy Chalk:

"lots of meanness,"

Games now have meanness, when did that happen ?

Good work Prosecutors! Not falling for that tired BS! :D

That gives me hope that this stupid argument is dying out.

You might say videogames filled him with the Passion to become a terrorist scumbag.

"Objection, your honour! My learned colleague is quite clearly talking bollocks!"

"Objection, your honour! My learned colleague is quite clearly talking bollocks!"

And this is why i love you.

OT: I'm fairly certain he'd have done this even if he wasn't playing video games; he's quite clearly just an anti-semitic, mentally ill nutcase.

You know, I can kind of understand (not condone) the mentality behind blaming video games for random acts of violence, since the real motives are often obscure or impossible to pinpoint...but a HATE CRIME? You've gotta be kidding me.

We know why this clown did this. He's a bigot who hates Jews. Pulling the video game card in a case like this is even more ridiculous than usual.

We've gone from videogames being a scapegoat for the prosecutor to being a scapecoat for the defendant. That's progress, actually.

I find it amazing that people could hate Jews. That would be like saying you hate people. Because the only thing we have in common is that we are all human, that really is about it. We don't even share the faith, as there are multiple levels of Judaism and people practice them differently. Makes about as much sense as hating someone for the color of their skin, or where they are from. Oh wait, people do that all the time. >_>

Finally someone has stood up and said that video games are evil. Join me in destroying the entire industry! It can't be too big, right?

Seriously though, how many times does this defence have to be totally crushed before people get the hint that it's not a valid one? It's just getting silly at this point.

WTF? I live 15 minutes away and I'm Jewish and I didn't hear anything about this prior.

Even if video games WERE to somehow insight a messed up person, it isn't video games' fault, it's his. I don't understand why lawyers pull this crap. games don't have the power to control minds and make you do their bidding. That's like saying ban baseball because running bases and hitting a ball reminded some wierdo about... well, bombing synagogues.

Oh come on. Now we are taking the rap for people hating Jews? Thats like a traditional historic passtime. So fuck you!
And someone with mental health issues is gonna go off no matter what. They could have read the bible and gone off and done it. Only difference is no one would have the balls to blame the bible.

Actually...... This isn't that bad.

Aren't we always saying "Yes, they can help violence along if the person was crazy to begin with"?

I mean, the lawyer still pulled this out of his ass, but at least he was nice enough to wipe it off with some toilet paper before setting it on the table.

o.o

wow, i really thought we gotten past these 'games made me do it', but as far as my actually thoughts on the story, I'd laugh it is wasn't so pathetic

Kevlar Eater:

Hey man, I heard that's what happened to Hitler, brah.

But in all seriousness, what the fuck.

It appears that my time machine worked. I'm in 2007.

The next president is black.

and in other news conservatives christans disaporve of homosexuality

*shrug* it happens, nothing to get into a rage over

Haha... "meanness"

Ah... what a way with words he has.

If the guy has mental problems then any medium could have influenced him. If he can't separate reality from fantasy then the problem is not what set him off, that's just the result of the larger problem with him.

I doubt he will make 2.5 million dollar bail.

What one game? He has an XBOX, he probably plays multiplayer games on XBOX Live, so...all of them?

I am this is what is...

How does that make any sense? But I guess I'm just preaching to the choir here.

I don't even know why his attorney is blaming video games. He flat out admitted his client had "emotional, psychiatric, and psychological issues" as well as "hatred for people of Jewish faith." If you can make a reasonable case for insanity, then why bring it up; unless the attorney knows his case is sunk and is trying to bring gaming down with it.

"God made me do it!"
He's clearly crazy.
Throw him in the loony bin!

"Games made me do it!"
OMG GAYMES R EVUL EXTERMINATE!!1

Business as usual.

Or maybe he was violent so played violent video games. If you have psychiatric problems before playing the games (as the lawyer infers) then it is hardly the games fault that you have psychiatric problems. Heck I'm pretty sure violent video games are the only reason I have not gone on a killing spree, gives me a release for my hatred of humanity.

him and the lawyer should be put to death for the crime of stupidity.
