13,000 Play Half-Life 2 For Half-Life 3

The Half-Life 3 "Call for Communication" event this past weekend was a success, but not nearly as big as it could have been.

The call went out to Half-Life fans last week, inviting them to fire up the ol' Half-Life 2 at 2 pm EST this past Saturday, February 4, not just to waste some Combine but to make a point with Valve: we love Half-Life and we're tired of being kept in the dark. It's been almost five years since Episode Two, after all. That's a long time for an "episode."

The response was impressive, as the Half-Life 2 player count, after not cracking the 2000 player mark since the summer of 2011, jumped from around 3000 to 13,216 over a single 30-minute period on Saturday and came one spot shy of breaking into the top ten Steam games for the day. On the downside, that number is just over one-third of the roughly 36,000 members the group boasted when in the middle of last week, a number that has since gone up to over 52,000.

"Our primary goal was to unite Half-Life fans in a unique and interesting way, and that was accomplished. Whether or not Valve will respond has yet to be determined; however, seven years after the release of Half-Life 2, over 13,000 fans have returned to play it again, together. That means something," the group founder wrote. "I am personally impressed with what we've achieved today. We're nowhere near done -- in fact, we are currently in the process of planning new activities; this was only our first attempt, and, in my eyes, was a success for everyone."

The real measure of success will be a response from Valve with some useful information about the future of the Half-Life franchise. That hasn't happened yet, but here's hoping that the player spike - and similar, bigger spikes in the future - will be enough to get someone's attention and get the wheels turning.

Well, I did my part. I played the game for most of the day, and I mentioned it to my friends. It's kind of understandable, though. I mean, most people have things to do on Saturday.

I spent an hour finding out if you could kill Combine by lauching the electro-mines at them!

I would've done my part, but I'm one of those dumb kids with a console instead of Steam.

I'm not a fan of the original Half Life, but I took this as a good excuse to try HL2 on Saturday, and I'm enjoying it. It feels much more like a Valve game than HL did.

Internets I am disappoint.

Most people need to sort out their priorities.

I sadly didn't participate. Blame it on me trying to get a goddamn installation to work for another game.

Personally, I can wait. I still play Half-Life fairly regularly anyway. As long as the final product is good, I can wait as long as it takes them.

I did my part too, I put up against bullshit striders on Hard for the cause ^-^

however I did find funny to go to the group's player list and find about 6 out of 20 (kinda, not exact) playing stuff like Call of Duty and shit after the HL2 event started XD

*shrug* What're ya gonna do?

Here, let me answer it for you.

"We have no plans at this moment to develop Half-Life 3, but that doesn't mean we'll never do it."

I doubt they'll get anything more than that. Maybe the ever popular Soon™

I think this would have worked better on a sunday, considering most people don't work that day. but i'm one of those 13000 people so i did my part.

Does that mean we can blame you if they don't come out with HL3 info?

I kid.

I played, it was fun!

I think it should be done periodically ya know, try to get some regular spikes going!

Just for the sake of it really, I don't think it'll make valve talk but it might inspire something somewhere!

Seriously, they're being awfully tight lipped about this stuff, even their loyal fans are losing patience.

So the fans didn't turn up?
(I know I didn't. Was busy... but I did play Half-Life the next day, does that count?)

If they aren't going to develop it, they would of sold the IP and made a nice profit. I think they still have something going on in the background...

I signed up for the group (the first steam group I've ever joined....I barely use steam) and didn't play so blame me.

No, I played HL2 and ep 1 and 2 all in succession and all for the first time about 6 months ago....by far the best FPS campaign I've ever played....I don't know how we've gone so backward since.

I don't know what to make of Valve's absolute silence. Part of me believes that they haven't done shit and don't want to have to blurt out "there's nothing- sorry" and another part thinks they just want to not fudge the official announcement they're going to make sometime soon.

Would the HL2 fans really calmly accept any answer other than "We're working on it- It'll be here soon."?

I feel really shitty and need to confess: On the day itself life interfered and I was unable to make it.

I shall fall on my own sword now...

I played through from the start up to when you reach Black Mesa East, skipped Ravenholm and the Highway 17 to Nova Prospekt, then gave up =)

I really would like to see this make a difference, I hope the guys behind this do it again at some point, maybe in a month or so if Valve are still silent =)

What sort of bullshit is this? Either they do it or they don't, and this isn't the first time a developer has made fans "beg" for a game, so don't let them think this stuff is a good idea.

Goddammit, I forgot about this. Would've played it all day. Goddamn colleges and their essays and shit.

I was out doing stuff. It was the middle of a beautiful Saturday, I'm not going to stay home playing half-life 2 :P

Shame I had to work ALL FREAKIN' DAY on Saturday, I would have joined in.

The thing is, I don't for a second think Valve is gonna bat an eyelid to these shenanigans, but it was a cool idea and I got my Zombie Chopper (Ravenholm with the G-Gun) Achievement, after all this time. Booyah! Such a good game still.

Anyway, I'm with the crowd that's basically saying, "at this point all we want to know is whether or not HL2:Episode 3 is still in development (hell) or ever to be expected... ever."

Look, I happily waited for Skyrim after Oblivion, I fully agree that with major sequels to the worlds greatest games, "they'll be done when they're done", and I can wait forever for Half-Life 3, don't really care about it, it's not on my radar. What I'm talking about is Episodic Content that was promised us.

I'd be more happy with an official "stfu it's never coming, wait for HL3" than just never knowing.

Anyway, like I said, I can't say I expect anything official to come out of this, but I like to think it was a worthy cause to spend some of my free time on, and a great game to spend that time on too, regardless of causes.

It's a win-win in my book. I don't know why people be bellyachin' against such things.

I really hope Valve give us... well ANYTHING at this point. The fan-base is becoming really stirred up and needs to be fed.

I did my part played Half life 2 from beginning to end. Then I tried to play the original Half life but I didn't get too far

I hope some fans make an entire new episode of good quality out of spite. Not sure if that would be illegal though...

Wait...

So only a third of the people who signed up participated...

There is no news of Half Life 3...

People call this a success?

Did I miss something?

I played, put it on my blog and even gave a free copy I had to someone else. I think they could have held it at a better time though people kind of have stuff to do at 11am on Saturday. It wasn't so bad for me because I was in the UK.

Gonna go ahead and second this. Then again, it was kinda doomed from the start. If Valve doesn't want to tell us anything about Half Life 3, I don't see how a bunch of people playing Half Life 2 will magically convince them otherwise.

I have a better idea, one that will get us a response... get everyone to STOP using STEAM for one day.

Hell, I say we boycott STEAM until we hear something! I'll start right now. Who's with me!?

Oh thank god that was a joke. I was about to tell you how useless internet petitions are, probably with a sarcastic spin, but then you beat me to it. Well played, sir. Well played.

That's pretty saddening... I don't personally own any copies of Half-Life or it's successor any more so I couldn't participate even if I wanted to.

In my personal opinion, however, I believe this stunt only really poked the blind beast(figure of speech) and made no real impact onto their already dashed promises. I would like to see a new Half-Life just for a change in the forever dulling FPS genre but fear I never will... alas, at least I played Portal 2!

That's where I'm at. I'd like to know if we should expect Half-Life 2: Episode 3 or just Half-Life 3. At the very least, this would give one less thing for fans to argue about.

Fan #1: Man, when is Half-Life 3 coming out?

Fan #2: You mean "Episode 3," right? Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Valve said that the three episodes make up Half-Life 3. There is no official "Half-Life 3."

Fan #1: But they also later admitted that the episodic model was a flop, and after all this time waiting, surely they'll make a full-size game rather than a shorter episode?

(and the cycle of speculation continues...)
