Frictional Confirms Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs

 Pages PREV 1 2

Oh. Yes.

I was interested when Frictional said in an interview (it appeared on the Steam news for Amnesia) said that the next game wouldn't primarily be a horror. I'm glad that was wrong/they lied, because they know horror. With them producing and thechineseroom writing, I think we're in for a treat.

A horrific treat, that will scar us for life, but a treat none the less.

Computer experts? You mean it's a PC exclusive? The requirements for Amnesia were quite low, so you should be able to run this on a very dated machine, one you should have somewhere in the house these days.

Also, are you really complaining about a PC exclusive with the word "another"? Really?

Sarcasm my boy. I did have problems starting it up(turns out my driver needed a patch) but getting help to solve it... That was a nightmare. NO ONE wanted to help me at all because I'm not computer literate(been a console man, wanted to dabble in the PC world with the mods.). I'm just hoping AMFP didn't have Amnesias problem(something about them not making it compatable with all drivers).

Sarcasm in that sentence merely indicates you're unhappy with the fact you need expert knowledge to play it. So either you're using it wrong (double sarcasm attempt perhaps? That doesn't really work) or phrasing it wrong, but in either case, updating a driver is not a matter of computer expertise, it's basic knowledge you can pick up in a few minutes like programming your TV channels on a new TV.

Also, we're living in an age where even my mom answers most of my random questions with "Google it" :P

I didn't know it needed to be updated till someone told me it needed to. Whenever I started up the game it said "This program will not work." Googled it, took me to the Frictional site where I did EVERYTHING that was in their troubleshooting guide. My topic was ignored on frictional forums and had to go on Steam forums till I was told what was wrong.

I don't think I've ever seen a troubleshooting guide for a piece of software that had the answer to a problem I was having. Kinda makes sense, what with the fact that if they knew about the problem, it wouldn't be in a troubleshooting guide, it'd be fixed.

So yeah, gotta Google that stuff. Funnily enough, the first site to come up on a search with the solution to your problem was PirateBay :P

That said, for future reference, the first thing you do if you're having trouble with a game is making sure your drivers are up to date. You haven't specified which driver you needed to update (if it's something like graphics card drivers, that's really the very basics), though I understand if you needed to look up drivers for some other stuff, download a .dll file to sort it out or sth like that.

True, I know now and knowing is half the battle.

GI JO-*shot*

So... We get thechineseroom's awesome storytelling and atmosphere skills and FrictionalGames' expertise in horror games and the like. Ladies and Gentlemen, prepare your undergarments because Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs will make you shit your pants like no other game has ever done.

(sure, FrictionalGames aren't direct developers but they'll be overlooking the game's development so I can assume their skills will still apply to the game)

Jesus, Amnesia terrified me beyond all hope, I'm amazingly excited for this, if it's as good as Dark Descent, I will need a nice 90 pack of undies.

Let's hope 'feverish visions' doesn't mean those cheap retarded flash scares like in Alan Wake. It most likely doesn't.

YES. I can't wait. I loved the first game (I wish my pants could say the same), and I hope they'll manage to pull off something equally as disturbing.

1899 and "A machine for pigs"
... Yea, they have a lot of stuff to work with that will make most anyone crap their pants here. Seriously... having read the Jungle, they have more atmospheric gore to work with here than any sort of murderous nutjob's mansion could ever hope to stockpile.

Still haven't played Dark Descent yet.

I should probably remedy that.

To Steam!

Wait.. Frictional AND the thechineseroom doing an Amnesia game? Holy freaking shite! This is going to be beyond freaky and beyond disturbing. Did anyone here play Korsakovia? Becuase if you did you would realise Dan Pinchbeck is a fucking genius with both hands on the real heart of the concept of horror games;

"What gets described as horror these days is basically just torture-porn, I find that boring, personally. To make something that was really bleak, nasty, frightening, confusing and just plain wrong, Horror operates on what you don't see, and the rush to slap our viscera and zombie hordes out on display at every opportunity is definitely tied into the fact that horror games just aren't frightening anymore. Frankly, I'd love to get let loose on the script for a full-on survival horror game, as to me, this is the really easy stuff, and it's amazing that it's being done so badly in so many commercial titles, especially as we're now doing so much other stuff so well. (i guess he got his wish)
.........
Don't get me wrong, there are the occasionally really brilliant moments in games: the Poltergeists' first appearance in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for instance but generally speaking, we've moved right away from horror to action in pretty much all our major horror franchises, and they are poorer as a result. Resident Evil 5? Alone in the Dark? They're just lame compared to their predecessors."

Let's Play a game.

I was thinking the same thing. Ever since Justine came out and took all the supernatural elements out of Amnesia and replaced it with a psychopath and her victims, I began to think that the writers had been watching too many torture movies. And then we hear this new title, that gruesome but strictly non-supernatural concept art, and that quote from the ARG ("the world is a machine for pigs, blah blah blah misanthropy blah blah blah nihilism"), I'm pretty sure this game is gonna force us to chop off somebody's bodily appendages. Whether we do this as a sacrifice to Cthulhu or not is yet to be determined.

I hope they move away from Lovecraftian horror. Lovecraft wrote some powerful works, but he has been reduced to a joke, really. It's sad but there's been an over saturation of Lovecraftian horror over the web, I'm not sure I can take him seriously anymore. Cthulhu's appearance in South Park really took the biscuit for me.

That being said I'm excited to see the direction they're taking and given the final hour or so of the previous game it will not be Torture Porn, rather it will have more in common with European expressionist literature and weird fiction, given the setting and the scant few details released, so, yes it will be dark. It could take you some grotesque places, but it will also be thoughtful in a very particular way.

Of course I could be wrong... but I doubt that, Frictional know what they're doing.

The Wykydtron:
No chance of a console port i suppose? No? Thought so.

Guess i'll watch the fifty billion LPs that are sure to come out at launch instead...

/sadface

The previous one didn't take much to run it... my crappy 250$ laptop ran amnesia. albeit at the lowest quality, but that made it scarier.

Yeah my laptop is pretty much the same price point but has an exploded battery now XD. But didn't Amnesia have problems with certain video cards? My laptop refused to run even the demo due to video card related reasons if i recall correctly.

That and whenever this super awesome new HD horror epicality comes out my laptop will just suck even more due to updated everythings. I have literally no faith in it at all, at least consoles will actually run everything 99% of the time.
