I expressed an opinion, and later retracted it, you jumped in a middle of a thread and your surprised that the original conversation had concluded. I guess I can't expect much from you.

I like how you're trying to play this one as if you've got any kind of high ground here. Moral or intellectual.

Not surprised the conversations over, at all. Surprised you think it's alright to expect people to comb through an entire thread to make sure YOU retracted YOUR stupid.

Like I said, it's on you to make sure people know you retracted the opinion. No one else.

But you don't get that or you don't want to admit that you get that. So I guess I can't really expect much from you.

Yeah its not to much to ask for you to follow the conversation if you want to comment about something I said, I'm done.

I don't give a rats fanny about the conversation, I was pointing out the stupid in your post. Don't want me or anyone else to do that in future? Addendum or GTFO.

I didn't say sheltered, just that parents should be able to control what subjects toy stores expose children to.

Then parents can vote with their wallets and go somewhere else?
If Toys R Us released a new GI-Joe action-figure, why should we allow that? Should parents have a say too? How about an easy-bake oven? Should parents have a say there?

No? Because these things aren't "offensive"? Well, neither is homosexuality.

It's not about homosexuality, it's about sexuality in general. Kids do not understand the idea of sex and until they do there's no need for them to be made aware of it regardless of orientation. There's nothing offensive about homosexuality but kids aren't ready to learn about homosexuality anymore then they are ready to learn about the ins and outs (heh) of heterosexual sex. You're thinking about this in an adult/teen manner, not a kids manner.

Also, the dude has an opinion, don't ram yours down his throat.

Dude, it's an internet forum, if you are posting your opinion here you damn well better be ready for people to disagree with and to tell you so, especially when said opinion appears to be in favor of censorship. Also, your right Kids don't understand sexuality, which means they don't link marriage to sex, it's just marriage.

You said you were done last comment. How am I ever going to be able to believe anything you say from this point on? You've obviously got no conviction.

Also the 90's called, they want their joke back.

Again, what about those of us that don't think homosexual marriage is the same thing as heterosexual marriage? Why should we have children's material deal with this subject if we don't want to have them exposed to it?

Then don't buy it form them. When you try to stop other, sane parents from buying it for THEIR kids, however, that is where the problem starts. You are trying to make the choice for everyone else based on your own closed-mindedness, which is why, to answer your question above, telling you "If you don't like what they sell, don't go into the store" is different from "Don't let them sell it."

Mortai Gravesend:

Hey, if you don't want me to point out the innumerable flaws with your post, don't keep replying. Otherwise I'll keep pointing out whatever bigotry, red herring, or false statement you come up with.

Stop being so juvenile with this crap. Volf's maintained a mature demeanor throughout the entire debate, I strongly disagree with him but he's conveyed his points in a polite matter. You, however, are acting like a condescending ass. Regardless of your position on the issue acting like that undermines your argument and makes you seem petty. Let it be.

Juvenile? Oh I'm so sorry that I don't treat prejudice with the respect it deserves. Oh wait, yes I do. None. His demeanor is quite irrelevant, don't be absurd. Politely treating gays as lesser is still just as fucked up.

Oh and if you don't like how I'm acting... do something about it? Oh wait, you can't. So I'll be a 'condescending ass' to people who act prejudiced all I like and you can go on and pander to them.

And I don't care if someone is so illogical they think it undermines my argument. Their inability to logically evaluate an argument isn't my problem, it's theirs. Deal with it.

Hmmmm Wait.....THIS!?!? THIS is the big deal over a comic?
Out of all the things you'd think mothers would complain about a comic, would be things like:

-Excessive Violence
-Nudity
-Religious Over/Undertones

But no. They complain about a guy getting married to another guy in an Archie comic.
Yet none of them bitched about how much of a man-whore Archie is when trying to balance the two chicks craving his affection like a couple of rabid mongoose fighting over a snake.

So here's my opinion on this whole subject

GO THE FUCK AWAY MILLION MOTHERS

*Sigh*

Addendum or GTFO.

You'd think with this many people postin he'd just go edit that shit and move on.

Maybe he likes it... deep down.

The Toys R' Us CEO is very pro LGBT. Its also one of the few places that puts gender identity discrimination in their policy. This is just par the course. They aren't going to change, so go elsewhere. Plenty of stores play it more safe, but making concessions like this would mean that they would ask them to fire employes for being different too. That would be unacceptable.

I'm not against the message, but... an Archie comic?

Next are we going to have an Archie comic about Abortion? Stem Cell Research? Polygamy? Assisted Suicide? Atheism vs. Creationism? Online Piracy?

... Because I would TOTALLY buy those!

Close minded parents: making people more segregated and unaccepted one child at a time.

So another stupid organization got mad about something stupid that might "harm their children?"

*Yawn* Heard this. Also, I'm too tired to make a coherent thought. I might expand on this later...

No I won't.

I don't know why...but the movie Chasing Amy came to mind when I saw this article.

Anyway, I don't think the mothers are mad at it for being displayed, I think their more angry at it depicting same-sex marriage as something that isn't wrong, if anyone is pushing these kids, its those moms not the comic book.

How do moms explain it to their kid when they walk into a gas station and their kid sees playboys on the magazine rack? Oh right, it's not gay.

What is it with Americans and wanting everyone else to parent their child? You expose your children to far worse every day with television and very few parents have the initiative to monitor what their kids watch. They'll just write angry letters to the station demanding it be taken off the air rather than PARENT THEIR DAMN KIDS. It's like those stupid parents who whine about violent video games and buy them for their kid anyway. Pay the hell attention to your kids and you wont have this problem. Nobody should have to do it for you.

Volf:
wrong, some people find homosexual marriage "offensive" when comparing it to heterosexual marriage, they have a right to voice their opinion just as much as anybody else.

When did anyone say they should not be allowed to voice their opinions? I'm getting the vibe that most people just think they are idiots and laughing at their failure. You don't want kids to be exposed to this kindof stuff? Thats your right, doesn't mean I can't look at you as less of a person because of it because that is my right as well.

I understand that but aggressively attacking a dude for thinking that parents have the right to filter what their kids are exposed to at an early age is retarded. *I* think we should let them form their own opinion when they're old enough to understand it. That doesn't make me wrong, it just means I have a different opinion and these threads are about discussion, not arguing. As far as censorship goes I wasn't in favour of banning the comic, I just thought I'd add a new perspective to it, I guess in an attempt to rationalize the Mums perspective.

Also, you have a point as far the kids not linking sex and marriage goes, I hadn't considered that.

It's cool man, no need to apologize. I understand he was in favour of censorship at first and that's not necessarily something I agree with but I can understand and relate to his original point (parents should be able to filter what kids are exposed to) so yeah, I backed that part up.

As a kid I wasn't allowed toy guns so I simply didn't get them, I'm in favour of that. If you don't want your kid reading the comics don't buy them. I can see why parents wouldn't want their kids reading it, it's a heavy subject for a kid.

The people who don't accept homosexuality are now the outcasts.

Hate is a choice.

not accepting and hating something are not always the same thing.

True, but when you have absolutely no valid justification for not accepting a certain group, it certainly goes a long way in compromising the integrity of your opinion.

Kwil:
Aw man.. disappointing.
I can't be the only one who read "same-sex Archie comic" and thought we were getting treated to some Betty and Veronica action...

You're not alone.

Anyway, I actually find this a little strange. Less because of the subject matter and more that I used to read the old Archie comics (old neighbor had a collection). Its weird seeing 21rst century morality in a comic when the last one I read was just getting past the idea that women weren't trophies.

Extremist parents:

Please realize that people grow up eventually. Maybe, instead of worrying about how your kids are growing up, you should try doing it yourself and realize that the 'homophobic', 'safe' society of yesteryear is... uh... yesteryear. As in NOT TODAY.

What I find to be funny is the shear fact that these moms just don't want to have that talk with there kids. I believe its better to sit down with them and talk to them early on. Also they say the kids are to young to understand well how will they understand unless you TALK TO THEM!!

I come onto The Escapist as usually it is one of the small islands of sanity and tranquility in this otherwise irrational and cretinous world, but reading some of this thread has shaken my belief in this previous assumption; since it does appear that the lunacy has started to creep in here and I do not have any oil or tinderboxes to light my way.
-Sigh-

Regarding my tuppence-worth, OneMillionMoms is, to my knowledge,
a) no where near as numerous as the name suggests,
b) some of the laziest mothers around, or rich, as they seem to spend more time being offended than looking after the required children, and,
c) synonymous with the myriad foaming-mouth Republican lobbys that have too much money and not enough sense.

If you don't like what a shop sells don't go there. Since porn had been involved, do you as a parent take your kid to the "Adult Store"? No since it is inappropriate, because it is for 18/21+ only. Homosexual marriage/civil partnerships are not adult only material that is going to corrupt your children.

[Apologies in advance for this] GROW THE HELL UP AND STOP BEING A BUNCH OF BIGOTS! It is actually making me feel sick that people in such a, technologically, enlightened age can be so backwards and retarded when it comes to seeing people holding hands.

I don't really have a problem with an openly gay Archie, but it does beg the question, what was the thought process on it's inception?

Maybe a Publicity stunt? When was the last time that Archie was actually considered relevant. I thought Archie died out a long time ago, and up until this article I didn't even know about this particular series.

So I guess it worked as a Publicity stunt. Any Publicity is good publicity.

Edited for rewording of last sentence. Turned out I didn't like it after I posted it.

Heh heh, It's fun to point and laugh at things. Like a group of women who have steam coming out of their mouths instead of words.

Funnily enough, if we abstract the story and the response from notions of "good" or "bad" all we gets is some people yelling about not liking certain material and some other people yelling at them for yelling. Every-time you respond to angry people by being angry at them, you fail to make a difference or do anything positive. Explain why you think they are wrong and stop posting smarmy comments about them or GTFO! Be better then your opponent.

I understand where they are coming from, both sides actually. The company has apparently made their moral decision in the case already. Honestly I find the idea that any place, even Riverdale, is an ideal version of the world to be the most offensive thing in this story as it tries to flatten and marginalize the world into one set of values and beliefs rather then appreciating the multiplicity of the world.

Andy Chalk:
Unfortunately, children are now being exposed to same-sex marriage in a toy store.

Oh wow.

God forbid the next generation EVER finds out that gay people EXIST. The implications alone are almost unfathomable.

*rolls eyes*
