Laugh at the Minecraft 1.2 Features Released Today

Minecraft gets an official update with jungles, cats and ... iron golems!?!

After its official release at MineCon in Las Vegas this past November, one might think that the Mojang team would slow down on releasing updates or adding content to Minecraft. That appears to be the opposite of truth, as Jens Bergensten has sure been busy since taking over development from Markus "Notch" Persson. The 1.2 patch for Minecraft was tested for a month, but the official servers all now support the new jungle biome, ocelots that can be tamed like wolves, cute little kitties, an increased ceiling of 256 blocks, and monstrous iron golems to defend your castle or compound. In true indie-style, the Mojang team released a hilarious video to show off the new features and tell the story of a zombie attack.

You can download the latest version of Minecraft here. Bergensten was nice enough to post all of the patch notes, but I've gone the extra mile to show you all the wonders documented at Minecraftwiki.net here. Get downloading!

New jungle biome
Added ocelots
Added cats
Added iron golems
New AI for mobs
Tame wolves can have puppies
Villagers will have children if there is room in their village
New map height limit (256 instead of 128)
New items and blocks
Added rare drops for mobs
Added 3 new blocks textures, that aren't yet used in the game(1 is accessable in creative, it looks like stone brick)
You can place Slabs and Stairs upside-down by placing them on the ceiling
Many other minor tweaks and fixes
Placing blocks on Wild Grass will replace them
Cave Noise works in Multiplayer

F3 has some changes and additions:
b: Shows what biome you are in
lc:
bl: Block brightness
sl: Sky brightness
rl: Raw brightness
It doesn't show the seed in SMP (due to popular demand) anymore

Lava now has a faint rumbling sound effect, and large particles that hop out of the lava produce a popping noise.

Bug Fixes :
Doors have been updated so that double-doors work better with redstone

Mojang released a quick fix 1.2.2 to address big trees not spawning in some areas. Man, those guys are quick ...

Still puzzles me why Kitties scare off Creepers, but kinda neat with the iron golems protecting the villagers.

But does every map have a huge "MINECRAFT 12" sign in it?

This is pretty cool. What are those lamp thingies the characters were turning on right at the beginning, something to replace the torch?

redstone lamps http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Redstone_Lamp

Can zombies really bust through doors now, or was that just for the movie?

Only on Hard and Hardcore, otherwise they just beat on your door.

They'll break through wooden doors during the night, but it takes some time.

This thing is buggy as all hell. It crashed five times on me now. A bit distressing...

I can finally have Babu, the ocelot!

S.Weeeeet! I now no longer need texture packs for proper lamps!
And I've been saying for months they needed to put reversed stairs and slabs in. Cannot wait to get my teeth into this!

look at his tufted ears!!

Just downloaded it, Im liking the new map height. Super towers here I come 8D

You could give some credit to the makers of the video as well. It wasn't exactly "Mojang Team" who made the trailer. It was Hatfilms, which makes their trailers.

So can I just laugh at Minecraft?

Mojang didn't make the video. Instead the Team HatFilms dude (Haatfilms, they used to be, which is their own Channel name). They've made all the Minecraft trailers because they're friends with the team.

But yeah, it looks good. Jen seems like a coding God compared to Notch.

I'm not laughing at the features, you misleading title you :P

This sounds cool alright! I'm going to start a puppy mill in my server! :D

You had me at defense golems.

Maybe it's time for a revisit into LEGOcraft!

Hopefully mine won't be a fox-eared asshole

Awesomesausages....

Time to re-make my world yet again, but starting over is super fun!

Watch out, he'll pee on almost everything, and is notoriously serpentine.

Oh wow, surprisingly substantial update.

new biome, new friendly mobs, new devices, and double build height!

Can't wait to make silly-ridiculous high structures, but I dare not play the damn thing until my mods update.

Double the maximum height? Pretty awesome

New mobs? YES!

That was seriously painful to watch.
They didn't... pay any money for that trailer did they?

I liked it personally. You can only do so much with Minecraft i guess. I guess i do like their other stuff better.

OP: I just started a new world just for this! Of course I end up in the middle of an endless pine forest.

Archer reference! And I'm naming mine Daxter.

An update on what the other guy said, Zombies will try and break down doors but are only able to actually do so on hardcore mode.

Minecraft: what doesn't kill you only makes you.... strangerrr

Oh? Cool. I've been a bit busy with Terraria's multitude of updates. Good fun in the mining games, of late.

Im gonna name my cat bob and teach it to annoy the villagers
a cookie if you get the joke

Apparently the newest feature is to always crash after I've played it for about 15 seconds?

Me and my chums have been enjoying the jungle biomes since the prerelease. They're quite epic, but you're really strapped for iron, redstone and mob-dropped items if you stick to them too long. Can't say we've experimented with the other features yet, except for annoying each other with the cats and occasionally finding that a Skeleton dropped a bow.

Ooh this update sounds really cool! [bolts off to play Minecraft again]

Haven't found a jungle biome yet in my singleplayer map, but I am going "D'awwwwww" as I watch the three village children run around with each other.

Friends of mine have laughed at me for calling them "Beard Babies," but since the texture pack I use gave villagers beards, and the child villagers use miniature skins of the adults, that's prettymuch what they look like.

I wish the Android version would get an update
