Daystar Clarion:

If I had a quid for every time somebody hinted that part of the escapist crew are being payed for their reviews, I'd be a very rich man.

Say what you want about his argument, but please, stay fucking classy.

You obviously haven't seen his DA:II review then.

I never said paid reviews either, it's a known fact that a lot of these publications get deals on the side for giving positive endorsements, and spinning negativity around onto the consumers whenever something like this occurs. It's happened somewhat recently too when Activision threatened to pull advertising from a review site that criticized MW:3 only to have their PR agency pull an about-face and claim it was all a misunderstanding after a public backlash.

I did, and I also don't think DA2 was as bad as everyone made out.

Greg loved the game, it was in his top 5 of the year, reviews aren't objective, obviously he didn't think the faults of the game had a huge impact on his opinion.

Now, either provide evidence that isn't speculative, or stop hinting at what I know you're hinting.

Here you go mate:

I really, honestly cannot understand what there is to get mad about here? Not trying to be an ass, I just really don't get the reaction. Could someone who is insulted by this please explain it to me?

You have a table reserved at your favorite restaurant, it makes all sorts of delicious meals that you love. You've been waiting all week to go because the workweek was awful and your coworkers can't stop bitching about EA. You finally arrive, sit down and order something delicious. Your cook then completely forgets about your order, and 45 minutes later throws a TV dinner in the microwave, and that is what is served to you. That's why people are upset.

to put what he said more bluntly they took a stock photo of an unrelated person (to game in general) and did a quick edit to it and used it as THE image for a major character, whose face has never been seen before

then there are the plot holes created by the picture, in game quarians have a bad immune system...so being outside of their suits out of a safe/clean area would probably be deadly

and then the question of if they were just going to use a human face and some edits why not use the voice of the character, that way even if people didnt like it they would still be hard pressed to say that it was not tali

basically they spent all of 30 min to give a major character a face

and ive been hearing too many mixed things on the game to risk my mental image of the universe to play it

This is the reason why I'm not getting this game. Not this specific thing, but the levels of idiocy it forecasts for the rest of the game. I mean, lets list out the levels of fucking stupid this is.

1. Using a photo of a real person in a game where the character models are practically cartoonish at this point does nothing more then draw attention to both the fact that the models are pretty shit, and that the photo is horribly out of place.

2.Using a stock photo rather then taking an original one/using your fucking game engine to render one. The levels of lazy, uninterested, "Who gives a shit, just throw something in" thinking required to believe that this is a good idea are unfathomable. And if they cared this little about a reveal thats been built up over all three of these games then how much must they care about anything else?

3. They actually asked fans if they should show Tali's face, used polls like with the new femshep. So, if you had the option of not showing it and were obviously too lazy/inept/apathetic to spend more then 30 seconds on it, WHY THE FUCK EVEN DO IT?!

4. Beyond all that, the photo shopping job on this thing is terrible. What did they do to turn this obviously human image into the image of an alien? Added a few black lines, smudged the earlobe till it attached to the neck and erased 2 fingers. THATS FUCKING IT. they didn't even bother to erase the fingers well or adjust the hand to make it look more natural; nope, just erase those fingers and throw some "High tech" looking black lines on her face for no reason.

Really, this one image, this one thing, illustrates for me all the lack of effort and stupid ideas that permeate this game. Because, lets be honest here, Mass effect was always a pretty generic cover based shooter with rpg elements, but with a good enough story to keep you going (even if it was just the same old sci-fi pick and mix of tropes thrown in a sack and regurgitated randomly.). But now, if the gameplay and demos are anything to go by, it's a subpar shooter with crap story and terrible ideas throughout.

So fuck it. Fuck it right in the ear. And while we're on the subject, fuck Dragon age 2, fuck Star wars the old republic, and fuck whatever EA zombie wearing bioware's skin put this out.

It just sort of feels lazy, they've been teasing fans with "What does Tali look like?" with things such as Polls and making sure her face is constantly hidden and when they finally decide to show us, they take a lazy route. I understand that it's cheaper, but really, you might as well have kept us in the dark about her face instead of just doing a poor photoshop over another person's picture.

I mean, honestly, would it really be that hard to hire someone from DeviantArt to do the picture (even if you couldn't make a separate model for her without her mask) they can do something a thousand times better then... That.

I mean, when you have something like this...

http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=žion=&q=Tali#/d3hetly

or this

http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=Tali&order=9&offset=48#/d4rg5l0

Hell, especially this.

http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=Tali&order=9&offset=24#/d3atepj

That photoshop just looks plain ridiculous, like something you'd expect to see on a youtube video titled "Famous people who are secretly aliens". It looks like there was just NO time and NO effort being put into that photo.

EDIT: I'm not even sure if price can be used as an excuse in this situation. Most of the artists may even have been willing to do it for free as fans of the series (especially since it gets their artwork out their for millions to see)

Regardless of people's views on the characters of Tali, it just seems lazy on their part and given it also describes a large part of their created universe, IE the appearance of an entire race I can see why this would annoy people. The same could be said if they exposed the Volus using years old fan art...

Just look at and compare the hand of the model, the laziness of just cutting off two fingers and not even bothering to modify the hand further just shows how much of an afterthought the reveal was. Now I don't care much I'm only going to buy Mass Effect when it's on sale but surely you can understand why people are upset that something that has been teased since the first game and has been one of the most discussed pieces of lore being treated with so little effort.

I know fans can exaggerate but this is a case of a company to treating it's loyal fanbase with, I'll say it, contempt and sadly Bioware are really going out of their way to make me actively dislike them.

Texas Joker 52:
You know, at first, I was just a little bit upset at hearing that they used a stock image for the base of Tali's face, pardon the rhyme, but now, I just don't care, and for several reasons.

Firstly, it doesn't change Tali as a character. It does not affect her personality, the character growth shes gone through, and the only thing it does change is the image for whats under the mask.

Secondly, despite the method in which they came up with the final image of Tali's face, really, it doesn't look that bad. Shes kind of cute. And if all Quarian's look like that, there's potential for some really sexy Quarian babes underneath those suits, and for Kal'Reegar to pretty much just be an alternate, alien version of Jayne. Which, really, would make sense if you think about it.

And lastly, it doesn't make the game less fun, or draw me in any less. I'm still having a blast fucking up Cerberus, I'm still wanting to know how its all going to end, and I still had my Man-Shep make sweet love to her again, since hey, Tali is sweet. The shotgun helps too.

For all of those upset because of how they made that picture, yes, it does seem a little cheap, but really, the end result isn't bad. For those upset because she doesn't look like Dr. Zoidberg, well, I'm not really sorry you didn't get to have a laugh at the expense of those who decided to romance her, at least not because of that. Besides, you know that a fair amount of us would probably have romanced her again, anyway, even if she did look like Zoidberg. Or a Zerg, for that matter. I know I would've.

For me though it's not about what Tali looks like, I don't care about her compared to Garrus and Wrex, it's about how lazy Bioware was to basicly barely modify a picture.

-'Some Mass Effect fans are incensed'-

Thank you Captain Obvious...

Regardless of this fact, we all aren't this stuck up and petty.

Witty Name Here:

http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=žion=&q=Tali#/d3hetly

just my opinion, but i like that one of the 3

OT: :/ really :/ that's kinda lazy of them in a big way

it however is a good reveal of how they created a good character to begin with...by accident

and for me it would break immersion when i see that grainy, poorly photoshoped image trying to pass itself off as artwork for the character

This article is insulting. Why does she have hair? Also weren't the Quarians reptilian. Also why is this so lazily done, I would have preferred that they didn't reveal her face.

And to the author, after 2.5 games of waiting this really does diminish the experience. I assume you picked this up without playing the other two games or are getting a large payment from EA.

"Statements like the above make it hard to understand exactly why people are upset."

Then why do you hand pick the least intelligent, simplistic, and emotional statements you can find when attempting to make a point? It's becoming increasingly hard to take articles like this seriously when they read like forum posts that dismiss things as non-issues based off the weakest rantings of a couple people. Much like how Kotaku called everyone homophobic for disliking the gay sex scene, despite comments mostly expressing disapproval of the awkward dialogue, animations, and how they re-used the same body model of Shepard on Cortez (Same back moles and build).

Truly, Greg, I'm sorry that you're unable to comprehend why some gamers would feel insulted that an easily Googled stock photo image was manipulated in under 15 minutes to be used as the basis for a character who's been cloaked in secrecy for 5 years. It's one thing to pay homage to something. It's another to half-ass originality by slightly manipulating someone elses' work. Do you give praise to every Deviantart page with a recolored Sonic the Hedgehog too?

Nonononononono.

Whoever wrote this article, YOU. ARE WRONG. Using a stock photo and editing it poorly in photoshop IS THE LAZIEST THING YOU COULD DO WHEN YOU ARE ABOUT TO REVEAL A CHARACTER'S FACE WHO WAS PREVIOUSLY HIDDEN FOR 2 ENTIRE INSTALLMENTS.

You had a gigantic budget Bioware. What the HELL happened? You couldn't spare a little money from your drug pile, so you tasked your no-talent lackeys to search google? Ya lazy pricks. I'm expected to pay 60 dollars PLUS twice that cost just to experience the entire game in DLC, so when I'm paying hard earned money, you better damn well spend a little effort and make a unique character model. This IS NOT UP FOR DISCUSSION. You aren't entitled to my money, I'm not an "entitled gamer" as this crappy site so callously throws around as a rather misinformed buzzphrase, and you are certainly above this Bioware, or should I say you WERE above this.

Of course, this doesn't ruin Mass Effect 3. No. EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE GAME RUINS IT. This entire game is a horrible final entry into the trilogy of what used to be an okay franchise. And this broke the camel's back with an iron piece of straw that you devs copied off of google images.

Go on, I know I'm gonna get banned or possibly warned for this because WE CAN'T GO AGAINST GLORIOUS BIOWARE OVERLORDS. guess we're already one step closer to thought crimes.

How...how could anyone actually be okay with a major gaming company using a poorly edited stock for the face of a character that's been shrouded in mystery for 5 years? Bioware has been teasing and teasing this for years and THIS is the best they could come up with?

Not to mention that it goes against their own established lore. Humans are supposed to be the only sentient race with hair. Humans are considered to be uniquely weird looking by most races. Quarians were already described as "hard bodied" in a fashion similar to turians. And now we're supposed to suddenly believe that they're slightly altered humans? How can you drone on endlessly about how important story and setting are for games...then turn around and pull something like this

This is Bioware looking the community in the face and saying: "Hey, we don't really give a shit. You'll buy it anyways"

Did they really do that? Did BioWare lose ALL imagination they previously had? That's a fucking human with less fingers and some strange markings on it, of course it's LAZY!

Kind of hard to defend EA BioWare at this point. Having just read an article about the corporate and back biting nature of the company now, and on the back of a pretty bad Day-1 DLC idea, the rather incomprehensible decision to cut out a large number of player choices on a franchise which sold itself on it's continuity, the really annoying mess I had just to buy a copy of SWTOR, and now this...

Tali was a main character. Not a throw away extra. Stock pictures should not have been used for her. If you're really not going to put the work in on one of your more popular characters, at least hold a fan competition for it.

This whole games reeks of disinterest from the developer, which is entirely unfair, as I'm sure the artists are passionate about Mass Effect. A great shame, and something which has tarnished what would otherwise have been the gaming event of the decade.

And for people saying we're complaining too much... no, we're complaining the exact right amount. These are silly moves by EA BioWare, and they deserve to get called out on them.

just off from my play (15h in) and ME3 is already effing suck. Dumb ass dialogue dumb ass story they halved dialogue involvement and apparently many of choices (previous and current) don't count for sh*t story is on rails and you can not make significant impact on it. i was hopeful till the very end and was disappointed.and now all this? Bioware is dead for me.

Ahhh, glad to see this made it to another news article.

Sad to see it's biased and defending Bioware.

The hate on them really did get out of hand at times, but this is lazy as hell.

They're a AAA studio, and they reveal one of the most beloved characters in the franchise is just a stock photo? Lame.

I mean, they wasted the character modeler's time telling them to create Jessica Fucking Chobot, but they couldn't spare the time for a MAIN CHARACTER, one of the most popular none the less?
It's the messed up priorities.

Also, I see the Biodrones are here again, making personal attacks on any "haters".
Good job guys. Keep at it. You're as bad as the "nasty Reddit trolls".

Bioware is getting really good at penny pinching is seems.

And people said EA was a bad thing.

Psh.

The worst thing is the hands, they just photoshoped away 2 fingers. They didint even bother to put some space between the remaining 2, you know like the quarian have had in every game?

... why is everyone so upset about this?

I mean - I could see the one thing (see the Irridium spoilered conversation at the beginning of this thread) but that is preventable.

Was it lazy? Yes. But then, considering the sheer massive amount of speculation on Tali's face, there was nothing they could do that would actually work. I mean -

Really guys, are people just looking for excuses to be upset now?

It's the laziness.

It's the mismanagement for resources.

It's the hypocrisy of a company that forces Draconian DRM down your throat, puts it's weight behind SOPA/ACTA and then turns around and goes grabbing images off the internet for their game.
(Go look at the other thread, they're stealing images from Deviant Art as well.)

oh- my - god.

someone photoshopped. BIG WHOOP. I photoshopped a stock photo once. Didn't pay for it neither. jokes on somebody.

The point remains that tali is totally the one i wanted to tag in ME1. Photoshopped photo or not-- either version works for me if this is an online alien dating site shepard found the photo on. I didn't do the ME2 thing-- i heard you could tag her there. I won't bother with ME, despite how much I liked the first one, because I just really don't want to install origen. even if it means I CAN tag me some tali tail.

This is a perfect example of people on the INTARNETS needing to get out of their houses. The fury and rage directed at video game companies by all these manchildren is really quite embarrassing.

Bara_no_Hime:

Why do you post here if you cannot read English? This isn't an attack, because practically everything you questioned has already been answered in this thread, including the far, far superior Tali fan-art.

Why is this even news? It literally makes no difference to the game whether they altered a stock image. Its a bit lazy sure, but not a big deal. People need to stop being such children.

Meh, stupid thing to do by Bioware. I don't know the reason why they decided to go with a stockphoto, but it can't be a good one.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter if it's a stock photo or not, people were going to rage anyway at what she looks like.

allow me to do another rage dump real fast.

The hand doesn't look like a quarian hand. The quarians have these really thin pointy fingers with much more space between them. You also forgot all the plotholes/continuity problems that arise from revealing what she looks like through a poorly photoshopped stock image:

1. She's depicted as having long flowing hair, but her suit is skintight up her neck, the back of her skull and up the side of her face. She'd have to be bald to be able to wear that. So did she decide to wear a wig just for this photo then?

2. You can see her eyes and nose behind the mask, and even though you don't see the whole face you can see enough to know she'd have some weird alien proportions. And yet in the pic she looks like a normal human with lines on her face.

3. The picture is taken outside in a field with the sun shining on her. She's clearly on the surface of a planet without a suit. What happened to the whole "quarians wear suits all the time because they have no immune system and they can easily die of diseases?" Why would she risk her life just to take this photo?

4.When the fuck would this photo have even been taken? Why would she bother to stop by some nice looking planet and take a photo with her suit off when the games have made it clear that she's pretty fucking busy ship repairing and galaxy saving.

5. When exactly did shephard even get this photo, there's no mention of it at any time before its revealed, and there's no indication he's had contact with tali outside in game interactions.

The whole image is just this one massive turd staring at you. There's no way you can fucking rationalize it's existence or her appearance in the context of the game's universe. Bioware could've put in the few extra man hours to model a face based off what you could already see and make a head without a mask for Tali, so you could see it, you know, at that one part where she takes her mask off and faces shephard. Instead they just took a dump on some image they got after 2 minutes of google searching.

Pendragon9:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Oh, so we're "entitled"?

We pay them our hard earned cash, and we're entitled when they don't provide a quality product?

GG sir, you have officially earned the title of "dumbest person on the internet". Please come up to the stage and accept your dunce cap.

I think you earned it all by yourself.

Tell me, where in my post did I use the word "entitled"? Show me. Quote my previous post with it bolded.

Oh, wait, you can't - because I never used that word. Nor did I imply it. Of the two of us, YOU were the only one to use that term.

My question was - how is a shit photo have anything to do with game quality? Have you PLAYED ME3? It is the most fun I've had in the Mass Effect franchise - ever. It has the best parts of ME1 and ME2 - I have never been happier.

Do I think the photo is shitty? Yes. They could have done better. But, since my chance of getting the photo (see Irridum's spoiler section) is nill (no way I'd ever make that decision), I don't particularly care. If I want to see a better picture of Tali, I can do an internet search.

Was it lazy? Sure. So was importing the planet scanner and not actually using it. Is it a deal breaker? No! Why would it be?

You can cry symptom all you like, but if the gameplay and story are good, who cares about a photo?

Does anyone else notice that they didn't even photoshop out the knuckles for the missing fingers they edited out?

LAZY WITHIN THE LAZY-IT'S A LAZY-CEPTION

BWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

Socken:

VulakAerr:
Let me explain how this all works to you guys.

1) Something, anything, in a Bioware game is revealed to the public.

2) Shitstorm rages for weeks.

3) Between 95 and 99% of this is a bunch of crybabies wailing about anything they possibly can owing to a deeply unfulfilling life at home.

I stopped reading there because I can easily counter that with: "95 to 99% of the people defending this sort of thing are mindless consumer drones owing to a deeply unfulfilling life at home and absolutely everywhere else [citation needed]."

Here's how it really works:

1) A company puts out a product full of lazy copy paste jobs, uninspired art, story and gameplay.

2) The game gets hailed as the second coming of Christ.

3) People rightfully point out the many flaws and exaggerate them, just like everybody else exaggerates the quality of the game.

4) "YOU'RE JUST MAD BECAUSE YOUR MOMMY DIDN'T LOVE YOU YOU NASTY TROLL!"

Then stop exaggerating. I can't hear the valid criticism through the "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH".

OT: I've never been less underwhelmed by a controversy before. Ever. Even the whole "Tali's Sweat" argument was at least completely outlandish, this can't even have that honor.

Waaghpowa:
I'm not going to get enraged about this, but it all comes off as somewhat suspicious. I just can't tell if it was intentionally done or laziness.

...I don't get why you're upset. It's a PROMO for Mass Effect 3 during the Walking Dead. It was clearly done intentionally to say "Hey guys who like the Walking Dead, here is that image with a Reaper and Shepard."

Is this really so horrible? If it's simply one photograph with an incredibly short amount of screen time, I don't think that it's economical or reasonable to spend a lot of effort on creating an original picture.
By the way, it's absolutely staggering that the fans were able to figure this out this quickly, let alone at all. Maybe it's just because I have a horrible memory, but it seems insane that they could remember the face of one stock photo. I've already forgotten what she looks like in the time it took to type this!

thiosk:

The fact that you're worked up over people getting worked up is deliciously ironic.

2) Shitstorm rages for weeks.

3) Between 95 and 99% of this is a bunch of crybabies wailing about anything they possibly can owing to a deeply unfulfilling life at home. 1 to 5% of this are genuinely disappointed fans whose hopes have been hurt in some small way important enough to them to make a difference.

4) Genuine disappointments are assimilated into the mob as "hard evidence" Bioware is turning its back on their fanbase.

3) Meanwhile, almost everyone continues playing in ignorance of the outside turmoil.

If I was a huge fan of Halo and in Halo 4 they revealed Master Chief's face, and it was just in a photo taken off of a stock image site, I would be pissed. People have been wondering what Tali looks like since ME1, and for Bioware to just take a stock picture of a woman, lazily photoshop two fingers off of her hand, and make her eyes white, that's just lazy. It's lazy and it's a slap in the face to anyone who liked Tali as a character. It's shit like this that makes me glad I didn't bother buying the game, Bioware doesn't deserve my money if they're going to be a bunch of lazy shits.
