Eve Online Panel Encourages Harassing Suicidal Player

Think it's a bit silly myself, the article doesn't get into any details and only presents it in a very serious 'tone' but we have no idea what was actually said.

My guess? This is being blown out of proportion by media sites that are looking to generate hits. If what was actually said was actually this bad their would be some direct quotes. Of course CCP respond seriously to not make them sound so callous if they don't or try to say 'they are blowing it out of proportion for page views' then they sound like they don't care or are crying victim. Plus you never want to get the media pissed off at you.

What a cunt!
I actually can't put into words how I feel about this!
Thats just bleeding retarded!

I watched the portion of the panel where this occurs. (Reposting for others to see)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=E7Ki91U-mBE#t=3705s

Looks like the guy sent the message as a way to try and get sympathy after getting shaken down. The depressed player may have made up whatever he wrote; we don't know

The only error I'm seeing is when the CSM told everyone the depressed player's account name and encouraged the harassment. Even if the depressed player is not really depressed, there's no need to grief the guy like that.

EDIT: I've played a bit of EVE a long time ago, just a free trial. The game does warn to regard everyone with a grain of salt (with a voiced tutorial that says this with noticeable regret/pity). The main thing I got from that is to stick to the high security core until you're ready to wander into the player-controlled fringes. Til then, you have no business being 0.0 sec unless you're part of or allied with the corporation that controls it.

And I'm reminded why the EVE fanbase is the scum of the internet... They're even worse than Lol and DotA... almost as bad as Xbox Live and that Japanese site that talked that guy into hanging himself on a live webcam...>.<

This industry is getting sickening...

You hang out in a place that makes money by shocking or alarming you with single-sentence summaries with the sole intention of getting you to click them, then worry about the state of the gaming community? Go to a forum or something, and see all the awesome things that aren't inflammatory enough for news industries to publish.

I couldn't bring myself to watch more than few minutes of the video due to the the presenter being a total immature, obnoxious, drunk dickblister. So yeah, it's not that hard to believe he'd do something like this (if true).
For better or for worse I don't know anything about EvE but I gather it's common to bully and scam other players. What would posses someone to play a game like that is beyond me. To each his own I suppose.

EDIT: watched the video, he does mention some guys name at 1:12:00 and invites people to find him. Pretty much stands for itself.

And here you are, posting on a well respected forum where one of YOUR members said "please stop living" to the guy who told another guy to kill himself.

Pot, kettle, black, you didnt even watch the video, why are you posting?

You mean how I get berated because I like JRPGs? Or because I wanted to try fighters I'm the gaming equivilent of Satan. Or how about because I wanted to make my own PC yet when I asked what were the best parts to get for it, I deserve to have my hands broken beyond repair because I'm not tech savvy.

Its very hard to talk or have a fun discussion when everyone wants your head just because of what you like/dislike.

jurnag12:
Well, I see one CSM member who isn't getting re-elected any time soon.

Sylveria:
Sounds like something the Eve player-base would do. The game is built for people who have only the minimal human functions and social-skills. They likely see the death of another player simply as one less person they have to compete with in the game.

There's plenty of friendly, social people on EVE. The fact that only the big heists, frauds, schemes and wars reach any sort of news doesn't mean that everyone's like that.

Not that any of those things are indicative of the personalities behind them. The game encourages it because its a game.

This is just cunts being cunts.

Okay, why are there about five accounts, all made today, that all seem to be saying the exact same thing?

Edit - And two of them yelled at me about being judgmental within three minutes of my post? I feel so loved!

OT - Well, that's pretty bad. I'm not entirely surprised by the fact that people are saying it, but I'm a bit disturbed that someone with that much power was given a panel, came to it drunk, and proceeded to spew such verbal diarrhea. I tried EVE, once, and could never get into it. Now I'm glad I didn't.

Woodsey:

It was within the game, and as an Eve player who pays attention to actual facts I can say with complete certainty: he will not be banned, and he will win the CSM chairmanship by another landslide next year. Personally I couldn't care, it doesn't effect me. Goons on the other hand are over the moon at the shit storm this has stirred up outside of Eve, not only that they generating tears and hate from ignorant people in game, they are now generating tears and hate from ignorant people outside of game.

Maybe because when you attack something in a ignorant manner, passing some kind of worthless judgement, it riles people up and they make the effort to reply. I don't like Mittani or the way he chooses to play Eve, but its a sandbox; you can play how you like and what he has done in no way warrants this bullshit.

[edit]

Just look at the number of people who read an obviously weak article, knee-jerked to some worthless conclusion, didn't bother reading any comments, but felt that their 2 line judgement was worth contributing - Eve kicks this type of person in the nuts again and again until they change or quit, blaming the game for their failings. That is why I love Eve.

I would happily strangle the life out of the bollockless twats who could say this about anyone. My advice while I watch them turn blue is grow a pair and insult someone face to face or just don't talk at all. Weaklings and children, one and all.

Because there are at least five people that were not registered before that came to comment on the uninformed armchair drivel and wholesale judgmental opining presented by the commenters on this post?

Just because the mittani is a douche does not mean that all tens of thousands of EVE players are, that's throwing the baby out with the bathwater, and reeks of moral high horsing.

So typical dick behavior for the MMO crowd, gotcha.

its gonna be fun seeing silver tonguing they'll have to do is something serious arises from this.

I didn't say it wasn't in the game. I said the rest of the stuff which people do - which would otherwise be trolling in other games - is encouraged, and is not indicative of the people doing them (which was the implication of the guy I quoted). This is being a dick in a way that the developers did not intend and do not support.

I genuinely cannot believe this happened. It's utterly appalling and it gives the reasonable majority a bad name. I sincerely hope that the people responsible are punished as harshly as CCP can manage.

I hope they all get raped to death for trying to make somebody they don't even know commit suicide.
Not much else to say regarding this.
They deserve nothing better.

Alright. I'm going to colonize another planet with robots and live out my life there.
Seriously, I would say that as a joke, but the idea is tempting.
Any world in which people could do such a thing is not a world I want to be in. I am honestly disgusted. No, really. I feel nauseous. I don't care what game it relates to, the fact that people could think that this is a good idea...

Left Eve online quite a few years ago ... great game .... but the people are sick and twisted

Thank you both for taking time out of your busy schedule running your EVE corporations and apparently laughing at telling someone to go kill themselves.

Or did you not think your sudden appearance was unnoticed?

Fuck that. They tried to take a life without reason. In a proper society they would be lined up against a wall and executed.

Seeing as we don't life in such a society that will take the steps necessary for humanity I hope they will be made example of by vigilante's.

I know it is unlikely, but it is deserved.

You know which european country was the last to do that?

You are every bit as bad, and if you do not understand why, you need to take an actual course in ethics.

Nobody "tried to take a life" and if you had watched the video you would know this.
Also you are advocating vigilante justice without the recourse to courts, law or trial.

You know what that is called in every civilized nation on earth?

Murder.

And another member of the EVE community coming in for damage control. Welcome!

So, do you guys tell people to kill themselves a lot personally, or is there a vote in the corporation on the matter?

They gave out the information of a suicidal person for him to be harassed. They attempted to cause the death of a person without reason.

I don't particularly care which European country was the last to execute a person for his crimes. Regardless of current practice, for some people four walls is three too many.

It is perhaps murder but it is less severe than what these people attempted. They attempted to take life without reason. Someone who would take their lives would be doing it for the betterment of the world.

Well...

First your damage control team calls into question the source (Eurogamer, a respected game website)...

Then they call into question the credibility the Escapist member that posted the article...

Now you claim that you're the victim...

You won't garner a lot of sympathy for your cause like that, and are just enforcing stereotypes about the EVE hardcore player base.

Posting from two different accounts so that it looks like someone actually agrees with you is 1000 different levels of pathetic. And yes, it really is that obvious.

OT: I expected this out of a MOBA community, but not necessarily EVE. I fail to see how they thought this was a good/acceptable idea.

Ive seen some bad trolling before... and whats even funnier is that he trys it again further down but actually has one or two badges... he could at least post one of his supposed links.

Concerning this whole fan run team thing, it seems to be blowing up in a few peoples faces lately. Why are these people allowed free stuff, like BETA testing, merchandise... oxygen?

EDIT: OH NOES, it seems a very small, very pathetic portion of Eves player base is attacking our interwebs! I mean if you wanna play internet crusaders then at least throw some links down that support your arguments... that is assuming there true.

It's a real shame that none of the good things eve players do for each other make the news... seriously, my corporation and alliance are some really good people. I can remember one guy ( a math major ) who tutored me in Precalculus over skype and saved me from failing math. Or this one time when we helped one of the alliance commanders make it through his divorce (which was likely brought on by his being an alliance commander but no one said anything about that).

I take some comfort in the fact that CCP has a history of really bringing the hammer down on this sort of thing, and that a few people will be seeing perma-bans and likely termination notices, in the case of the representatives.

BrotherRool:
Remember this is a news article though. We're coming at it from a different perspective, I'm assuming they were taking it as forum troll from a drama queen. Which you know, you do meet that sort of person on forums.

It's probably a good reason never to forum harass or troll to the best of your ability though, because you never know where the other person is actually at

There is also this possibility, that it was just an average nerd rage or drama queen. But encouraging someone to kill his or herself is still really fucked up even if you think you are trolling.

Why do I not find this all that surprising?

Noceur:
Nice source you got there, care to actually look it up next time? Failure journalism.

keddren:
Haha, none of you neckbeards have even watched the presentation.

You have done such good here, being very informative on how inaccurate the news source is and explaining what is wrong.
Truly you have made a positive contribution to this discussion and represent the Eve community well.

Seriously, can you cut the attitude and be, I don't know... Useful?
I'm not going to go condemn the entirety of a game based on the actions of a few. I've played good games with bad communities, and I've had terrible experiences on games with supposedly great social environments. No one group represents the entirety of the player base, and dramatic reporting aside, most people here know it, too.
If you care enough to try and change others' perception of a news article like this, then don't half-ass it.

Yeah..... the controversies, the heists, and the scams are what make the headlines, but you don't hear about some of the really positive things that EVE players do for each other. Once you get past that, EVE players (with possible exception of the Goons or some of the uber-1337 corps out there) are pretty chill.

I used to play with a guy who was recovering from being paralyzed from the waist down from a work accident. I didn't know this at the time, but he was basically using the game and our camaraderie to stay sane despite the fact that he was in pretty much constant pain. Later, when he said that he was going into surgery to try to repair some of the damage to his back and apologizing for his absence, I immediately heckled him for apologizing when he said that it restored some of his control to his hands.

But the goons are jackasses. Don't trust a goon unless you are a goon.

I'm interested in what CCP will do with this CSM. Considering they clearly violated the EVE online terms of service. Specifically 1,2 and 29 and maybe 7 I'm not sure about state/national law on the subject.

EVE online Terms of service:
http://community.eveonline.com/pnp/terms.asp
Revision date: 01-31-2008

I find it hard to believe that this is true, probably some misunderstanding or it's blown out of proportion. It is beyond me how anyone could think that it's a good idea to do this on a public event.

I was really thinking of getting into this game, but I have completely been turned of it now.
