Anonymous Threatens Internet With "Operation Blackout"

Much like a dying star flaring up one last time, Anonymous tries to make one last attempt at seeming relevant by threatening to turn off the internet.
In that same strain, when this fails utterly it would be nice to have a black hole where they once were.

I'm all for activism, protest and demonstration. But this type of behavior doesn't really make any kind of sense to me.

We think you're abusing the citizens, we feel you should be made accountable for what you have done.
To further that end we will abuse the citizens ourselves.

Uhhh....

-Mod edit: fixed for you!

I guess I should be glad I'll be out of the house all of tomorrow, but that still leaves me with the lingering question of how long this will actually last. There are people out there that will be more than a little inconvenienced by this, should Anonymous actually pull this off.

Does anyone know what time zone they're operating in? My internet went down at 9 o'clock GMT with a DNS error, so I assumed it was this.

Hey, I got an idea! The government wants to censor the internet because they think it's a reckless and lawless place, so we'll prove them wrong by shutting it down forcibly. That won't strengthen their cause, right?

Yeah. Anonymous does that, I loose all respect I had for them. Up until recently, I've seen them as internet freedom fighters. For a couple of months now I've seen them as way too enthusiastic and ocassionally douchey, whilst still mostly reasonable. This'll just push them into the category of jerks doing stuff 'cause they can. The internet IS Anonymous. Pretty much all their ideals are in effect on the internet. So they shut it down? Doesn't make much sense.

Anonymous, stop. You're making people see internet users as jerks, and you're hurting your own cause. You're hurting about 10% of the people you're protesting against, and about 75% of the people you're supposed to be protecting.

Sorry for that rant. Just had to get it out of my system.

War, why must they constantly fight. I know the leaders of our nation are not all that good. I just said, in another post today, that I have a great distrust of the government. But, at the same time, I trust them far more then Anonymous.

The Anonymous, anyone who disagrees with them (even mildly) is attacked. Saying, they are wrong gets you their wrath. I fear that if they really did come too power that I would be needing to develop a resistance cell to combat them. I do not feel that way with the current government, I may not trust them with some civil right, but better the devil you know.

I will weep with great Joy when the FBI (and maybe the US military, depending on whether or not they are American) start breaking down their doors.

PS. Taking down the internet, even for one day, will hurt the economy greatly, not too mention other ramifications of the internet being down in our over-connected society.

DEATH TO ANONYMOUS, FOREVER REIGNS THE KING

Yes, because the one way to get a message across to people who are in favour of harming the internet community, is to harm the internet community.

There is no such thing as "the internet community"

On this scale, there is. Any group of people with something in common can be referred to as a 'community', and in this case the common factor is usage of the internet.

People shouldn't just use the word "community" to denote ANY group of people with something in common, since there is more to the idea of community than just that.

If I was one of the following: irresponsible leader, sopa supporter, wallstreet banker pricks....

I wouldn't feel threatened. I'd rejoice because the internet is working against them for the most part.

If all they wanted was attention, just sign a deal for reality tv shows or something. As Jon Hamm says, stupidity is something generic Americans love to celebrate...

What is this I don't even...

They are going to shut down the entire internet? Is that even possible?

(Oh wow. something other than that Fry Picture. Pretty refreshing)

So let me get this straight.

Anonymous have been saying that the internet represents their ideals like freedom of speech and whatnot, and this is also the same group that (along with many other groups and websites) opposed SOPA and PIPA because the bills could potentially destroy the internet.

And now they are going to do the one thing that they have protested against?

You see, this is what I'm talking about. Anonymous have degraded themselves so much because of stupid things like this. They don't care about the people anymore, and quite frankly, I'm not so sure they ever have cared.

Anonymous, please. Stop, just stop. The people have had enough. You just don't represent the people anymore and you're nothing but a complete and utter joke.

Sorry for this rant, but they are just getting on my nerves now.

Note: I'm aware they have said that they are not going to "destroy" or "kill" the internet, but that still doesn't change my opinion of them.

I am sure you never supported anonymous so why the rant about how they NOW doing things you don't approve of?

Well, prepare to be shocked because there was a time when I actually thought Anonymous was cool in a way. I liked how they stood up to cults like Scientology and at the time, I really thought they actually cared about the people they claimed they were fighting for.

I fell out with Anonymous when they went after the wrong people, which in my opinion began with the Wikileaks incident when they decided to go after the credit card companies that stopped funding Wikileaks, and not the government that was trying to cover up the secrets that were being revealed.

My hatred for them went on throughout the course of last year when they went after gaming companies for no reason other than standing up for a single hacker (although much of that was LulzSec), authorities because they had simply tracked them down arrested them (not sure those sort of attacks are doing them any favours), and even being cowards by not standing up to Facebook and Fox News.

While I appreciated their protests on the controversial bills SOPA and PIPA (which I hope stay dead), this internet takedown threat is to me the final straw. Anonymous are just dead to me. They don't represent the people anymore and the fact is they don't care about the people anymore.

only real crime: distruption of the flow of information

only thing i will be upset about: i dont have the hub in my cable package and i have to watch the new episode online so i will miss it until the net comes back up. oh well ill be cool. one day not checking my tumblr, i think ill live

LOL. This I would like to see.

If they success, we all can look forward to the news cycle covering their arrest and imprisonment in Guantanamo Bay. With luck, it will be the end of them and I don't have to listen to their self-righteous angst ranting and won't have their publicity stunts clog up my news feed.

It will be a good laugh if it turns out one of their "higher ranking" members turned out to be an FBI mole like the LulzSec case.

well. 30 minutes where I'm at til march 31st so we will see soon enough. I'm skeptical but intrigued. Human psyche would be interesting to see in this modern deprivation situation.

On a side note. Anonymous...... U.S congress shelved the SOPA and PIPA acts indefinitely after wikipedia and google went offline for about 12 hours. You are about two months too late for this to seem relevant. They kinda got the hint when they couldn't use google anymore which to 95% of the internet using population is considered "the entire internet." Not to mention the only people you will actually be hurting or effecting are business people who rely on credit internet connections and dedicated connections for other various reasons. I don't see the point of this message other then to announce you are uber trolls of the internet.

But I'll grab the popcorn and watch to see if this really goes down.

Howlstone:
Why do this on a Saturday when everything is closed anyways. Wouldn't it make more sense to do this on a Monday?

EDIT
nevermind thought you said sunday. I was gonna call you out for being crazy. my bad.

Technically this probably isn't possible unless they take down all the ISP's DNS servers. Every corporate DNS server.

The only thing that wouldn't work, IF they successfully took down the ROOT DNS servers would be that new domains wouldn't work. Or domains that don't get a lot of traffic on any ISP and require a ROOT lookup.

If the ROOT DNS servers were processing every single DNS request the Internet would never function as it was right now.

I kinda thought thats a lot of traffic to mess with. And certainly its not a hardware attack which means another hacker can come behind and fix whatever they messed with. And call me crazy but I feel like the NSA, China, both Koreas, and the EU would have their own techno-zombies on standby to counter attack stunts that would "shut down" the internet. Seems like a pretty big undertaking.

My home is routed through my own DHCP server that keeps dns records for 1 week unless I do a manual refresh, this coupled with a Firefox plugin designed to fuck sopa means even if it does work I'll still be able to use the net so long as where I go doesn't use http linking to different servers in their page source.

It's the 31st in 2 American time zones, meaning it's been the 31st in a very good chunk of the world for awhile now. I'm waiting, Anon.

(You can keep my wall from getting a million gesture-less "Happy Birthday" posts on Facebook. I might have a reason to spend my 20th birthday outside)

It's 6:16am here in the UK so that is the 31st March in the USA.

I wonder what will happen. Will the boats Internet blow up or... will there be an uneasy silence...

Meh anon will wait until it's 9am in the USA so people will see the Internet is broken...

Hey even if they miss the deadline they can just wait till it's April 1st and start it then XD

April Fools?

I have research papers to do.

"Ooh yeah, you're real scary!"

zyzzyx:
Uhhh....

Fixed.

Press Preview before you post in future please :)

Anonymous just trolled everyone.

Just take a look at a calender ;)

March 31st right now, the internet seems fine to me.

Is April 1 now in Eastern Australia. Nothing interesting to speak of. Got a DNS lookup error for a few seconds but then it was back to normal.

annnnnnnd busted. anon is officially just a name now.

Guess I gotta correct my previous statement: anon's pr isnt run by EA, its clear now its run by Peter Molyneux :D

while i dont think for a second they could pul it off i will admit i am curious to see how the world would react to no net

Awww, I was kinda hoping it would actually happen. Might have got some people out into the real world for a day or two... Oh well, back to the forums!

Looks like we may be in the clear on this on!

I wonder how anonymous planned to expunge my personal DNS-cache of my private network, or everyone else's for that matter. So even from a technological standpoint, I don't see the sense in this. And don't get my started on their confused "ideology".

Good thing it never happened.

Yeah, didnt see this coming because its not as if people have not made such claims in the name of ANON in the past.

But hey, they totally meant Hawaiian pacific time, right? right?
