Anonymous Threatens Internet With "Operation Blackout"

Can someone, anyone tell me if MSN would be safe in these attacks? I want to stay connected with my snugglemates while the internet's in the dark.

In the event this ISN'T a hoax, why would Anonymous protest something that would restrict the free flow of information... by restricting the free flow of information? It's paradoxical. Even if they'd go on to say that the state they put the internet in would be what the government would, people'd just take the attacks at face value and blame Anonymous. It doesn't make sense...

Remember that time I called Anonymous cyber terrorists and someone said "No they aren't!"? I do.

Hello Roller Coaster Tycoon!

Hello Roller Coaster Tycoon!

Doesn't that require a Steam connection?

Not sure if serious.

Anon has not made good on threats before, as far as im concerned they're just blowing steam.

Doesn't that require a Steam connection?

Not if you have the original CDs!

March 31st...the day before April 1st? A day commonly know for jokes and hi-jinks?

Yeah, imma put my scepticism hat on here.

I'm honestly surprised it took 50 replies before someone said this.

DJ_DEnM:

Captcha: The all-new Chevy Sonic

Apparently the captcha won't accept "The all-new Chevy Shitbox". I think mods need to fix this.

That's about the only Captcha I ever get and one little spelling error means I have to re-enter it. It may help prevent spambots, but when it's the only Captcha you get it gets annoying extremely fast. I hope the mods fix it too.

Honestly, anyone who is taking this seriously should be ashamed of themselves. And did no one tell these idiots the story of "the boy who cried wolf?" The more they do this the more no one cares and the more any news associated with the the Anonymous group just becomes a big joke.

APRIL FOOOOOOOOLS!

Good one anonymous

I am now on OpenDNS. You may proceed

Dear Anonymous,

Please, do not do this. The internet is used by much more then just greedy bankers and stupid politicians. It's used by everyone, all over the world for various reasons.

People use it to talk to their love ones on the other side of the planet. I have family in another country, who I talk to through facebook. Protests and important events are done through social media sites. Students use websites that test their skills. Teachers put homework on blogs. Doctors, business owners, and just about every other profession, use the internet and their own website, to communicate and help the outside world. Everyone uses the internet, and if the internet "stops. the world stops. Even if it means someone can't get to a website they NEED.

I do not like SOPA. Not even one little bit. But SOPA, and bills like it, despite everything wrong with them, was originally about trying to stop people from abusing the power of the internet. And that's exactly what this would be seen as--- abuse of power. The blackout that so many people supported was a choice. People chose to shut down their websites. You would be FORCING THEM. This is against the very principals you are fighting for. This will not bring SOPA down, or bring the masses to your side. You would only be seen as a tyrant, and a hypocrite. Not a freedom fighter. Even now, I can see that anyone who is taking your threat seriously, is seeing that you would only make the problem worse.

I am not threatening you in any way. I wouldn't' be able to even if i wanted. I am simply warning you and asking you politely: Please don't do this. You're not helping anyone. You're only going to cause more pain to the masses that need the internet you are trying to help. And you're making it worse for all of us.

Sincerely,
Tegan Dumpleton aka SlugLady28

(course, this might just be an April Fools joke. In that case, disregard the above message)

I'm sure those servers are VERY well protected, the likelihood of such a plan succeeding is close to nil. I hope it does, though, it might send technologically illiterate people a message about how vulnerable this precious resource is.

i can live without dns servers for a day. Will be interesting to see if they can shut them down though.

... This is a terrible idea. I hope they won't actually try to do this. All they'll succeed in doing is making their side look bad and getting the politicians to wildly wave their arms about and go "See! This is why we need to censor the Internet!" Besides, can it actually be done?

I dont know if i should be upset or meh-ing this. Sure the blackout might actually get people who support SOPA get a taste of their own medicine, and realize what they have done... but couldn't they just done it in a way that does not inconvnience everyone?

Im just hoping i would be away during those times.

edit

Okay, first of all, the motive. The idea that there are bankers lighting off 100 dollar notes and laughing at the suffering of the poor is, to put it bluntly, glue sniffingly retarded. It is a characature of the real problems that face society and it has about as much depth as a captain planet villain. I may sound like a bit of a broken record when I say this, but people are not comic book villains and the only way to engender any sort of progress is to understand where every party is coming from. Is there a problem with greed, yes, should there be greater regulation of the financial market, probably, but does that mean that 'the banks' that immaginairy hegemony so beloved by the anti-capitalist crowd are being run by snidely whiplash? No it does not.

Secondly, the continued assumption that anon's behalf that they speak for the internet. I don't know about you, but I find it more than a little silly that this is apparently supposed to be a protest about the nameless, faceless organisations that run parts of our everyday lives with hyperbolic speeches about enemies that are blown way out of proportion while congratulating themselves with how only they understand 'the people' and doing grand gestures that hurt only their cause and the people they claim to stand for..... or was that a protest performed by a nameless, faceless organisation that wants to run a part of our everyday lives with hyperbolic speeches about enemies that are blown way out of proportion while congratulating themselves with how only they understand 'the people' and doing grand gestures that hurt only their cause and the people they claim to stand for? I always get those two mixed up.

The internet is just like any other community, in that we do not agree on anything, but people will still try and brand us with specific ideologies.

"To protest the possible censorship of the internet we will censor up the internet." I am not sure how hamstringing the internet will help Anon with its goal of free sharing of information. Unless, of course, they wanted the information shared over sneakernet only.

Why shut down the internet as protest? That's like tyeing yourself to a tree to protest voting fraud. Go after the villains, not the people already complaining about them.

This is their april fools joke? Oh come on Anon, you guys can do better than this =(
I am seriously disappointed in them that this is the best they got...

IF it's anythign like their 5th of November threat, I'm not worried in the slightest, ever since their failure on living up to their 5th of November promise, I've lost any faith in them, if they pull it off, I'll believe they are pretty B.A again. But I won't bet on them.

I really hope i'm not digging out my popcorn for nothing...

I know that this likely won't work and we will still be browsing the internet at the end of the month, but I just in case I have a list of the ip addresses of common sites for anyone that wants a backup plan.

Edit: I should just say that I got this list in January so some links may not work anymore.

Bobic:
That's it, they have officially moved into the realms of internet terrorism. We don't like what a specific group is doing so we're going to attack everyone regardless of how related to the offending party they are or even if they are against them.

Of course, saying that would make them feel good, so I'll go back to referring to them as being on the same level as angsty teenagers breaking glass windows and tearing down posters thinking that makes them 'hardcore'.

Hmmm...Terrorists don't tend to give away plans before hand... surely that would just result in some 'extra' precautions being put on the servers won't it? Hmmm... I don't really know how this works... But they'd better have their own computers security tight, or they will be caught in a jiffy...!

Yeah hack the 13 most secure servers in the world, a feat hackers have been trying to do since the inception of the WWW, that will happen. Oh and ignore all the cache service that goes on to specifically avoid going to root DNS servers anyways that will make the total effect if they do succeed moot. Also avoid the fact that if you do this literally the entire world will want your ass on a platter. You may have 15 proxies but with every government wanting your ass on their wall they will fucking nail you. There is nowhere you can run and nowhere you can hide if you do something like this. It's the equivalent of blowing up a major town with a nuke and trying to hide behind anonymity and hope no one will find you.

Wait, its on saturday? Oh god... my ponies... NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

SNIP

Again... not that I really beleive it, but 'Poor Prior Preperation Prevents Piss Poor Performance' right?

If it did happen, how do the i.p. addresses work? Put them in the address bar, and bob's your mothers brother? Or is there more to it? And will links still work?

Anonymous, we know you still exist, however unfortunate that is.

Now shut up and go back to your corner.

I guess you just put it in the address bar and it should work. To be honest, I don't even know if this will work, since, to my knowledge, nothing like this has ever happened before.

Kind of makes the wannabe hacker in me go squee but seriously!? Fuck you Anonymous! How do you guys expect me to go without YouTube for a day!? Oh wait I'll just right down a few IP Addresses to long videos that I enjoy which doesn't go through HTTP in theory it should work.

Now that's emergency preparedness! :D Well assuming there is actually going to be a internet wide state of emergency.

>government, banks, etc. screw over the public
>Anonymous screws over the public

The public just can not win anymore.

while i will admit i am curious how the world would react to having no net and the chaos it would cause and i know its theoretically possible. if they managed to actually pull it off well they would be confirmed in most of the general publics eyes as "terrorists" and therefore not end up in courts but going missing and waking up in prison cells without rights

umm...
excuse me anon

could you please possibly hold off the blackout till Sunday.. please?..
because new pony episodes come out on saturday and ... well I'd like to stream them

Lol, I'll just be playing LAN with my friend anyways so I don't really care.

eh whatever. i won't get my hopes up. i'll just give my usual 'good luck with that'.

I have big exam that I have to take online on Saturday. I swear to God if these dumb mother fuckers try to mess the Internet up, it will be my personal goal in life to find them and kill them.

Also, how is this any better than SOPA? Anonymous' logic is, "we are going to prove the error of SOPA's potential Internet breaking ways by breaking the Internet!"
