Valve's New Hardware Project is Wearable "Steam Glasses" Pages PREV 1 2 3 NEXT
I'm really looking forward to having huds in real life! Will be damn awesome (though I can barely bring myself to play on my iPhone on the bus, as I find it embarrassing).
Oh you <.< | |
Indeed! I'd love to see Valve take on Google, or specifically see Google consume Valve.
I tip my hat off to you sir. Hoping for a answering selection a la terminator so i can say Fak YU asshoole to people.
its either this. or just another one of this: RelaxView 4.0 Eyewear or something stupid, like the Toshiba's '360-degree' head mounted display
Oh my god, think of the possibilities! You could give yourself a health bar! You could make yourself a dialogue wheel! It wouldn't say anything particularly relevant to the conversation, but then again Mass Effect rarely does anyway.
i really do not like where this is going...
because the conversation choices on the wheel always represent the outcome.
I think that technology like this will lead too AUG reality games. They have one that is similar for the 3DS where you use the devices cameras to hunt down and battle ghosts.
3-5 years? yeah keep dreaming. 10 years? maybe with a full R&D budget and unlimited supplies. just to do something like that without hand input you'd have developed the tech to track eye movements. and that has to fit in glasses which will have laser projected HUD on the lenses so gotta figure how to do that. plus we're talking about processors, memory, and i assume internet connectivity in glasses. i'm not saying it can't be done, but i am wondering if the tech is a feasable and if it is could it be marketed in a way that could make profit.
If the internet were to go down for one day our society would collapse, I'm not sure this will help with that. If the internet would go down for one day we wouldn't be able to see anymore.
What's with Valve and gimmicks lately? I'm sure as hell like to see their biometrics work...From a third-party point of view.
You read: They're making computer glasses
Yeah. I'll probably end up buying them. I think it'd be good for some ARG stuff, and chatting to friends. Maybe bluetooth connection to a phone with Steam mobile for voice/video chat.
and with this we get one step closer to our end, if this becomes norm 20 years from now 40 years from now we'll all be like in the movie Wall-E
Valve. Once again proving to us that having a real HEV suit is closer than you think. Captcha: Face to Face, good Daft Punk song that.
You know what, this doesn't sound like a totally stupid idea. My first thought was "hmm prescription lenses for something like that would be hella expensive". But then I figured in 10-20 years we'll have practically cured blindness so bad eyesight should be an easy fix. Deux Ex shades here I come!
I'm not sure I get the point of a video game company doing this. Unless the end goal is to have the glasses be able to double as actual, opaque "eyephones" that people can use in lieu of a TV set or monitor, allowing 3D movies and games to be more immersive. That's something I would love to see, especially now that portable computing devices are approaching the processing power necessary to render photorealistic game graphics.
I know Valve has a habit of not giving people specific job titles, but I don't see much potential overlap in expertise between programming/designing an upcoming game and engineering physical hardware.
Probably two different teams working on similar projects. Google will probably focus more on the Social Media aspect while Valve... I don't really know what Valve would focus on, hopefully something slightly game related
That was the best thing I've ever read.
Oh boy! This looks really....STUPID. Seriously, it's going to create a transparent overlay that allows you to see through them to the real world at the same time you see the display? That would make the graphics incredibly crappy. Everything would be this see-though film that would pull you out of the game every time someone or something passed in front of you. And even if something didn't, you'd still be looking right at stuff in the real world, which unless you're staring at a blank wall could potentially effect your ability to see certain graphics.
I have REGULAR glasses that I don't like to wear because they mess with my peripheral vision and hurt my ears, how are futuristic computer glasses going to make it any better? I think I just answered my own question, actually...
You can pre-order them already.
I've seen Dennō Coil, this is not going to end well.
I was thinking about money shifting from HL3 to the R&D of these glasses.
I know most people see this as silly, but someone has to do the research and development if we ever want this sort of thing to be a reality.
What? No SteamBox? No Steamcast? No Apple Valve Red Delicious? No, even better!
That right, Gabe Newell, you better: I'm not leaving! I just bought a timeshare, YOU aren't making me leave!
... Am I the only one concerned about what could happen if people try using these things while doing something slightly more important? Like walking? I mean, there are actually people that think it's perfectly OK to fricken text and drive. I don't trust the average human being to not think, "Hey, I can play video games while I'm driving!"
augmented reality glasses that can play bejeweled, hell yah
Wearable computers? From Valve? Pish and tosh! I scoff at the very notion of Valve releasing anything that isn't hat related. Capcha: eat your vitamins. Not a bad idea.
Oh, geezus... Hey, we skipped the hoverboards and self-drying clothes and went straight to that? I don't know if I'm contempt with that...
They should just build a giant model of City 17, and have players pay to go through it in an HEV suit.
Well after the whole mobile gaming blows over we will either have the technology or not to go the next few steps, and those are computers in glasses and later on sprayed monitors on top of eyeball.
Somehow I doubt Valve is going to have problems ensuring that they have enough money for everything they want to do.
Cue a lot of bad driving and people walking blithely into traffic...

I totally want this, but I would awfully surprised if people actually were willing to accept this. Imagine if this were nintendo developing this, you'd all be complaining about how "gimmicky" this product is.
