Fans Protest Tera's Censorship

Fans launch petition over what some might consider a minor change.

Fans of the upcoming MMORPG Tera recently launched a petition protesting several recent changes made to game's European version, though strangely, they're not protesting adjustments to the game's classes, leveling system or anything that'd typically occur to an MMO. Instead, players are apparently upset over Frogster's decision to cut down the amount of digital blood that appears in the European version of the game.

"We, as members of the Tera community, feel that this time you have crossed the line," reads the petition's statement, which is titled "Bring Blood Back to Tera EU!". "The community was patient for a very, very long time with your incompetence and childish games. You have played with the boundries [sic] of how much the community can take. Count in all the false information that was given to us."

The US version of Tera has been given a Mature rating by the ESRB. However, in Europe, Tera was given a much lower 12+ rating by PEGI. In order to keep in line with this rating, Frogster decided to make several cuts to the European version of Tera, the most notable of these were the lessening of any digital blood or blood splatters that appeared in combat in addition to removing a slider that allowed players to adjust the amount of blood that could appear in-game. According to a forum post made by Tera Europe's lead community manager, blood still appears in the game, but at a reduced amount.

In response to this apparent high-level treachery, several European players are vowing to cancel their pre-orders or only play Tera on the unaffected US servers.

So lemme get this straight. 9 year old girls in their underpants is okay but the blood had to go? 9 year old girls in fox ears and underpants but its the blood that is the issue. REALLY!? This is the one time not a single fuck was given about sex in video games?

Well at least they're being polite and respectful.

Fuck em, I say. In all likelihood they'll still play. If not, are you really losing anything, community-wise?

I thought the (Somewhat) stereotype was Europe was more concerned with violence than sex and vice versa for the states.

If the European mainstream has such an aversion to blood, it's no wonder your women don't shave.

Okay show of hands: Who else thought this would be related to the dress-code?

When I saw the box I thought they might have added an extra 10mm to the clothing, when I read the article I knew exactly what this was about. It's probably so that it doesn't get held up or banned in Germany.

Thats just Germany. I dont know why the country with the biggest record of bloodshed in European history got this adversion to blood in digital media from, but its there.

I did. Imagine my surprise to see it was something much more minor.

They should keep the slider but possibly put a parental lock on it just in case there are younger aged players that do play and that helps the parents monitor the amount of blood on the screen.

Captcha: History repeats itself, too true captcha...Too true.

Well, I see why they did it, at least. The strongest economy and probably the biggest prospective market in the EU has an aversion to bloodshed in video games. From a business perspective, that's a no-brainer.

But yeah, parental locks would be a better solution.

Really, they're protesting just because of having no blood in the game?

Does every single video game these days need to have blood in them? No, they don't. So, stop whining about these minor changes and just enjoy the game.

You know those Germans when it comes to video-games: Besser tot als rot

Hands up everyone who read the headline and thought Tera had covered up some skin.

Point taken, though i figure since it looks like a 9 year old girl, it would stir fury more than blood.

My first two guesses were that people saw the elin race and called BS, the other was that they were given pants.

I, too, originally thought it was going to be a dress-code related matter, which I probably would have protested against on the lines of it being petty, but this takes the concept of petty to a new level. Sometimes I really worry about the gaming community.

Meanwhile, titilating softcore-pornographic apparel for every females (and even some of the males) of every race including the big-hipped little girls is 'aaaaight. Oh you, TERA.

I don't remember the last time I looked at a game and said "yup this would be so much better if it had more blood splatter effects". I guess this is a big deal to some people but for the life of me I don't understand why.

Yeah, more or less. Though to be fair, it seems most of the complaints about violence and whatnot come from Germany.

I would censor the pedo shit before I would censor the blood. But maybe that's just me.

i would not censor anything. the dressing in tera is very good looking, my only complaint is that the males should share of the same greco-roman style approach to clothing. that is, barely any at all. no that is not sexual, i just find the dress code beautiful, if a bit on the erotic.

Take all the blood out of the game. All of it.

Just to piss of this fucking cunt and all their supporters.

EDIT: Also, give the little girls some fucking pants. Seriously.

to be honest i hate censorship so fight on petitioners. i don't care if it clothing or blood or what ever it is. if its censorship i want it gone

this.

given the pedo bait in the game you'd think that'd be a bigger issue (and what i thought they where getting all uptight about)

"Yeah, the whole 9-Year-Olds-With-No-Pants thing was insulting, but the removal of blood? YOU HAVE GONE TOO FAR!!!"

If you're going to complain about stuff, the least you can do is start with the big issues and then move down to the minor ones.

And yet Great Britain created Bottom.
God, we're awesome.

Add 1 more to the crowd that thought they would be giving the little girls some pants.

Yeah, from a business perspective i can understand the blood part, but...
y'know, the nekkid little girls... giving them some pants and making sexism in the game optional, instead of mandatory, would also help business. just sayin'.

I'm given to understand that the elin's shortpants were originally more like panties than shorts, and that the current version IS the censored one in that regard... Don't know how much truth is in that, though.

I briefly played in the Tera demo and didn't really miss any blood. But then again I don't know what I missed so maybe the visuals would have looked better with more blood.

I don't like it when these ratings gets to decide what goes in the game. If the designers felt that more blood was needed then they probably had a reason for it, and I'd rather be able to play it as intended.

Age ratings really are very stupid the way they work at the moment. I'd love to see more games with an adult rating. Not because I want sex or blood all over the place, but because that would allow for uncensored titles. Censorship is bad m'kay.

Ditto. Especially given the stereotype that the English are in denial over the existence of anything even remotely sexual.

Something that some people are missing here, main news article included, is that it isn't as shallow as "no blood". Frogster has been promising that the client will essentially be the exact same as the US client, censorship (or lack of) and all.

Then with the release of the latest client the blood, as well as the slider that could limit it and such, were either removed or drastically reduced with not a hint of warning or announcement by the developers. And when questioned about it, Frogster either ignored or locked/deleted the topics.

Coincidentally enough, apparently the older EU beta clients still have the blood in them, as well as the removed sliders.

I like how they've given themselves the option of playing on the US servers, because they know they won't be able to manage actually boycotting the game entirely if nothing is changed.

I think they should just stop whining and play on the US servers, 100ms of extra ping is surely worth it for all that lovely blood!...

To be fair, those girls look at least 12.

Wait, I... this doesn't make sense. For starters, they changed the game because they got a lower age rating? That's kind of the opposite of what should happen.

I really hope this is just in the German version (considering that the German version is always cut) or maybe allow third party mods so you can just mod it back in.

There was blood in that game? I only played the beta but there was really blood? O.o

At least it wasn't as bad as the no more heroes blood censorship. "Hey let's just replace the blood with blocks of black ash, nobody will notice!"
