George Hotz is arguably the most recognizable hacker name in the world.

Sigh... No... no he's not.

I'd actually never heard this guy's name until right now.

He will never be anything like, say, Mitnick.

This. I mean, Mitnick even had a film made about him, hes released various books and hes pretty iconic. Geo is a clever guy, if not bit of a gibbon, but I wouldn't say hes the most recognisable hacker name in the world.

My first response is "When isn't he?"

This isn't news.

For some reason when I read that I thought of this:

Ah hell nah. Now I have to watch that video over and over and over again.

I can see where the "most recognisable hacker name in the world" viewpoint comes from. There were a couple of weeks last year where geohot was being reported on almost every day and people who were looking into why the psn was down no doubt came across his name. This made many people aware of him when normally they wouldn't have been.

As a person who doesn't look into hacker related news unless it affects me, I've never heard of Mitnick.

*facepalm* facepalm everywhere.... With no end.

And yeah, how about that money people paid you in order to fight that lawsuit with Sony back when they were suing you and not anyone saw a penny for it after you fkeed to South America?

The guy's a genius, I'll give him that, but that doesn't mean I still can't be bitter about him.

I want to see him in a PSA like that old "This is your brain" Egg. "This is your brain on drugs" smash egg.

Now can we stop with the whole doing drugs is for stupid people? I mean if you go into any university it's pretty quickly disproven anyway. Can't we just say sometimes idiots like drugs and sometimes geniuses like drugs too.

Exactly, people like me who couldn't care less about this kind of stuff still know GeoHot. So maybe not among people who give a shit about this kind of thing but Hotz is probably more known mainstream.

OH MY GOD SOMEONE DID RECREATIONAL DRUGS - ONES NOT PERMITTED BY THE GOVERNMENT.

Crime of the century, Story of the Decade, Certainly worth writing an article about.

There was a survey a few years ago among videogame developers, programmers especially, and a massive percentage of them smoke dope... like 40% - which in any career besides gangster rap, is a pretty huge percentage. Not trying to sell it here! - but it can be difficult for programmers to wind down, and smoking probably helps with that quite a lot.

It's par the course for a lot of programmers just like it is with other creative industries, people shouldn't assume anything about dope smokers, because they probably had a hand in creating your favorite games, favorite music, favorite movies, books, anything that benefits from creative freedom really.

Greg Tito:
Still, George Hotz isn't a bad guy. He honestly doesn't believe he is doing anything wrong by hacking computers, phones or gaming consoles, even though major corporations like Sony and Apple may think differently.

Sarcasm? If it's sarcasm, I salute you, sir, but it's hard to tell in writing... If this on the other hand is to imply that one isn't a bad person if he just firmly believes he's doing nothing wrong, well, then we'll have to agree to disagree.

Not sure what to make of the dude himself, tho - I think if he's planning to off himself by means of precription-grade painkillers, it's probably his business. Wouldn't consider someone like that a "hero" of our generation. Also not rolemodel material.

Greg Tito:
In that struggle, GeoHot fights to keep it all free.

If my eyes could roll any harder, they'd shoot into the back of my head and I'd be permanently blind.

GeoHot isn't a hero - nor should he be treated as such.

Also, this.

GASP! A computer hacker that smokes pot?!

No.

Fucking

Way!

/sarcasm

One thing I do fail to understand is how hacking of any kind can be considered "legit and aboveboard."

How is it illegal to hack your own PS3?

I'm not claiming to be a legal expert and I can easily be wrong about this, but I'd imagine the terms of service with any piece of hardware states that you can't fuck around with the coding and then post said fuckery on the internet.

If nothing else, according to this article, it was enough to get Sony to sue him.

dogstile:
So he's a smart guy who's a dick about it? Isn't that pretty much any mentor character or cocky protege (is that the word?) in movie history?

image

Pretty much, yeah. Stereotypes had to come from somewhere, as do stock characters.

Dumbest title ever.

Greg Tito:

...

For example, while running a red light near his residence in Palo Alto, CA, he said. "Fuck these assholes. Stupidest red light ever. It makes no sense at all. I live by morals, I don't live by laws. Laws are something made by assholes."

...

That is the kind of thinking that leads to bullshit rationalizations that allows a person to think it's okay to just do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, to whoever he wants, in whatever manner he wants, for whatever reason he want without regard to the effects or consequences his actions may have on others. That is the kind of thinking that leads to thinking that everything is supposed to just go his way and nothing bad is supposed to ever happen to him. That is the insular, conceited, self-centered, self-absorbed thinking of a person who is mentally 5-years old, or less. That is 100% selfish, child-like, douche-bag asshole thinking.

GeoHot, you are not the only one living on this planet. Grow up and get over yourself.

and THATS the problem..some jerk thinks he's smarter than "the systm" and somone will end up hit by a car...dress it up all you want running a red light is running a red light...no matter how "justified" you feel

I do understand that mentality though. Although I can't really judge much without knowing the exact context.

What a nice young man.
I hope he had a happy 4-20.

This really isn't news so much as mud-raking. We've had several presidents who've used drugs as well. So please, Escapist Magazine, stop trying to "break a story". This is at the very heart of what's wrong with journalism and it's a large part of why we often don't like journalists. It's none of my business what this guy does on his own. The only thing he's done that deserves my attention is crack the iPhone and the PS3. This other stuff is what sleazy lawyers bring into a courtroom to paint a picture. I can paint my own picture.

I wasn't going to release the PS3's master key, until I got high.

I was going to exploit it for my own personal use, but then I got high.

Now Sony is suing my ass, and I know why.

Because I got high, because I got high, because I got high...

This just in Geohotz is neither a sinner or a saint... still a 100% douche bag though.

We will never know really if it is truly illegal cause Goehotz didn't have the balls to take it all the way to court. He settled out of court and no legal determination was really ever made. So the world may never know.

That Norwegian gunman and Hitler didn't believe they were doing anything wrong either.

*leans back in chair*

I await everyone's counter-arguments.

Tshk, tshk. You should put a bit more effort in your flamebait.

But if I understand this correctly we have a very gifted adolescent who considers his talents an excuse to act like a twat.

How... original. And news-worthy. Especially news-worthy.

I'm the kind of person that stands at a crossing and waits for the light to tell me I can walk across, even if the street is entirely empty and I'm the only person there (call me crazy), but I don't think he was saying "hey, I just drove through this red light in the middle of rush hour." What I got from it was him ignoring a red light because there was no cars or people anywhere in the area.

Not a good idea to pick and choose when to obey traffic lights, but I'm just sayin' I don't think it's as bad as it sounds.

Running a red light when no one is around? Not really unacceptable, though I would not say it was good either. But bragging about it as if that makes him a philosophical genius? That's more what I take issue with here.

Terms of service/EULAs are already somewhat unstable legal ground because you have to agree to them AFTER you buy a given product (and if you opt out, then you lose the product you paid for), so it is hard to say if this is illegal or not. The only absolutely true thing I can say about it is that it is a gray area.

I remember the first time I jailbroke an iPhone, part way through the process a picture of some random pre-pubescent twat unexpectedly appeared on my screen. I said out loud, "who the fuck is this?" Then a couple of weeks later I found out who he was, and that he's about thirty times as smart as I am. That was... humbling.

On topic: meh.

I have a lot of respect for him managing to jailbreak both the iPhone and the PS3. The drug use makes it even more impressive, but is actually quite common amongst quite a few people the media would typically call hackers.

To everyone saying he opened the doors to piracy, this is true, but he didn't do it for that reason. Hackers want the freedom to install whatever they can on computer systems they have bought with their own money. Some users might install illegally copied software, but there's a lot of free/open source software out there that people want to install, and DRM prevents this. The PS3 in particular was marketed as a home computer that you could run Linux from & also play games at the same time; a lot of people bought it for this functionality.

Basically, at the end of the day, the PS3 is a computer, and you should be free to install whatever the fuck you like on it, regardless of potential consequences for piracy. This is generally true in the eyes of the law, and definitely in ethics.

This is not news.
A retarded young adult smoking pot and not giving a fuck about breaking the law is not news.
What the fuck is happening to the Escapist News Room?

I never really knew much about the guy to begin with, but from this article he just comes off as a total asshole (as many many others have said).

You follow the law for a reason. Saying that you ignoring it because "Laws are something made by assholes" just makes me want to strangle you. Get over yourself.

Then again I have little respect for people who smoke or do drugs to begin with. But seriously, fuck this guy.

mad825:
And in the latest news: rebellious teenagers drink alcohol.

Yes we do.

OT: Alright.

*crickets chirp*

SNIP

I think he meant his morals, not the clowns in charge. Do I need to remind you of simple thing such as gay marriage and how it's not legal despite it being fairly common sense that it should be? There's nothing wrong with saying "fuck you rules" when they're wrong, or at the very least you see them as wrong. Not that I'm commenting on the hacking in question; just in general that's a good way to live, in my opinion.

Okay? So the dude was lit up. Doesn't make him any less of a public douche. A bullshit creed that amounts to "if it's good for me, I'll do it, regardless of what it means" that would have Ayn Rand beaming with egotistical asshole pride still makes no sense if anyone other than the individual in question is involved.
