Kinect and Internet Explorer Come Together on Xbox

Microsoft is reportedly working on a Kinect-driven version of Internet Explorer for the Xbox 360.

Xbox 360 owners may soon find their consoles equipped with a fully-featured web browser. The 360 currently offers media searches via Bing, but according to The Verge, Microsoft is now playing around with a version of Internet Explorer 9 for the console that will bring the web in its entirety to couches and big screen televisions.

Even cooler, the report says that Kinect gesture and voice control will be "heavily integrated" into the browser. Kinect won't be mandatory, but the 360 version of IE9 will be "heavily tuned for Kinect usage," and if you're not right at this very instant dreaming about telling your Xbox to "enhance 34 to 36 - pan right and pull back," then I'm afraid we just don't have anything else to talk about.

Microsoft hasn't said anything about when this fully armed and operational web browser will actually be available to 360 owners, but with E3 happening in June, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect to hear something official in the relatively near future. Now if only someone can make it work with Google, we'll be all set.

Yes I fully agree.. its about damned time MS allowed for an internet browser.

And yes, how does one go about uninstalling IEX and replacing it with firefox, opera, safari, basically anything other than IEX or Chrome.

Ya hear that?

That's the sound of no one giving a single fuck :D

My laptop is literally 6 feet from my Xbox.

So they took two of the worst performing pieces of shit and spliced them together?

Whatever works.

Fuck, does this mean I'll actually end up using Internet Explorer? They said this day would never come. Oh well, maybe I can watch porn on my big screen TV now. That's all I ever used IE for anyway.

Why...
why would I want motion controls in a browser?
Name one thing this'll enhance over mouse + keyboard. Just one.

Oh good, now I can have the 'amazing experience' of using IE on my Xbox.

Kinect, the most useless peripheral ever created and the most broken internet browser. Oh, funsies.

Well this is kinda awesome... I wonder if this means I will be able to play realm of the mad god on my 360...

Oh and the responses by the haters are just hilarious

Simply life changing. Will there be specific gestures for certain functions? Maybe if I pull my pants down and fart at the screen all my browsing history will be cleared.

I can pay $150 for a an addon for my Xbox that lets me use the world's second worst web browser, next to Netscape?

Because raising your hand like a kid in elementary school to select things and awkwardly talking to your television is so much more convenient then just typing stuff in with a keyboard.

Ahh, Kinect and Internet Explorer. Two bad tastes that go horribly together.

Like strychnine and arsenic.

I cant wait to see what kind of viruses that IE9 will let onto 360s.

Unfortunately as i type this im watching TV having to listen out for my dads car alarm going off so i can turn it off, at the moment it goes off about every 10 mins due to a fresh hole in its glass roof it got today. Oh also, my dads a bricklayer, guess how it got the hole in its roof.

"Xbox - Open Internet Explorer - Go to: Google.com - Search: Pornography"

The true reason we need a hands free experience. I hope it does not track all motions.

I can't justify it, but I can say mouse and keyboard will never be as cool as working voice to text command. I am not saying it will be able to do this, which is the problem.

I predict a lot of problems with unintentional "scroll-up-scroll-down-scroll-up-scroll-down" commands.

"Xbox - Find Asian boobs"

Dammit, Kinect! I said "Asian boobs" not "Raisin tubes!"

All you people joking about using this to watch porn, the joke's on you. Judging from the way Microsoft has been handling Windows Phone and the 360 so far, this will probably have some sort of porn-blocker built in.

Also didn't the PS3 have a Web browser since day one? I remember hearing people making fun of it because they thought it was a useless feature, but at least it didn't take them six and a half years to implement.

won't stop me from watching my anime porns those are more tricky and easier to get around lawl.

On the subject.... i would rather die like this then use that.

Andy Chalk:
"enhance 34 to 36 - pan right and pull back,"

That's what she said. Okay, but seriously, take the numbers out of the whole quote:

Enhance, stop. Move in, stop. Pull out, track right, stop. Center in, pull back. Stop. Track right. Stop. Center and stop. Enhance. Pan right and pull back. Stop. Enhance. Pull back. Wait a minute, go right, stop. Enhance. Track left. Stop. Enhance. Give me a hard copy right there.

That's what she said.

Which brings me to my next point; knowing what many on this forum primarily use the internet for, combined with motion-sensitive controls...

Anyway, seems cool, I guess.

$10 says this will require Xbox Live Gold account.

They already charge for multiplayer.. Might as well charge for everything else on the PC that's free.

Seriously? Who doesn't have their computer in the same room as their Xbox. If Microsoft were gonna do this they really should have done it much earlier. No one cares now.

Besides, I'd feel awkward reading out the names of the porn I wanted to watch.

Bing, IE and Kinect the worst Microsoft has to offer all in one place.

OT, not the least bit interested, thought it's surprising that the xbox has no browser...

So..now Microsoft also allows virusses to be easily planted on your Xbox 360. How lovely of them

Seriously even with their "more secure" IE.. the fact is.. the basic design of how IE works is unsafe!

You do not run an application in such a way that from the application layer something can crawl right down into the system layer... with IE that is what you get.

Poor Xbox360 owners :!

Sure the browser on the PS3 sucks.. but at least it cannot break your PS3.

Haha, nooooo thank you. Youtube on Xbox is equally as useless. Why would any sane person want to browse the internet with an interface which takes considerably longer to operate, when you can simply use a computer -_-

18 quotes in and I finally found someone as depraved as me. Thank you good sir. I must say interactive pornography is an... interesting idea that could spawn from this :D

Hope I dont get a virus though.

The user will be able to force a page into compatibility mode simply by flipping the bird.

probably wont be able to unless you get a jailbroken console, same reason why you wont be able to download and play WoW on your 360.

WoW on the 360, get on it Microsoft, you will make millions.

but, yea, Microsoft loves their shitty browser, so dont expect a way to get another one that doesn't involve them busting down your door with a C&D order.

moving your wrist up and down will be the kinetics signal to load a new page.

your wanking will open 100 new windows, overheat your xbox and you will end up with a ROD.
have fun.

If it doesn't let you use a mouse and keyboard, it isn't fully-featured. Anyone still not convinced that Microsoft is chasing the motion control loving casual crowd that Nintendo is now regretting that they chased?

Great idea! But about 8 years too late.
