Square Enix Sued Over Kane and Lynch 2

image

A Chinese lawyer has called Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days a "Chinese slaughter game."

According to a news article on Japanese news site, NariNari, translated by the scholars over at Sankaku Complex - which I'm not going to link to due to the site suffering from a severe porn infestation - a Chinese lawyer has filed a suit against Square Enix over its terrible third person shooter sequel, Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days. In it, he accuses the company of "damaging the image of Chinese people," "mocking China and the Chinese people," and "causing people to misunderstand China."

The lawyer is demanding an apology, as well compensation from both developer, IO Interactive, and Square Enix to the tune of 10,000 yuan or around $1600.

Kane and Lynch 2, which is set in Shanghai, sees Kane and his fraternal life partner, Lynch, visiting all kinds of violent horrors upon the Chinese populace - culminating in one very distressing scene where they expose their horrifically pixelated testicles to unsuspecting police officers.

Now assuming NariNari isn't the Japanese equivalent of The Onion, and, God forbid, this nutball actually wins in court, he isn't going to stop with Kane and Lynch.

"If I am victorious, it will establish a precedent allowing us to sue others - we will be able to strike a great blow against foreign companies who think they can insult China," he proclaims.

No doubt any winnings the he receives will go to support groups for those brave police officers still suffering the effects of elderly-male-scrote exposure.

Where has he filed this suit? In China, I presume. If it's in China, I could see this winning. We know what they're like with their state sponsored media and all that, I can't see why the courts wouldn't uphold that this is evil anti-Chinese propoganda of some sort.

one, this game is how old? and two, You dont see Russians suing over Call of duty, you dont see Japanese suing over Medal of Honor, you dont see Elites suing over Halo.

This guy's got some balls.

Sorry, sorry. I'm here all week, please try your waitress.

On topic, I can't see this getting very far even in a Chinese court - the court doesn't want to make itself look ridiculous.

"Wort Wort Wort! The prosecution rests, your honour."

Damn. They're not being sued on the grounds that it's a P.O.S?
Nuts.

Throw out the case, you won't win.

Geez, wonder how many people plan to sue Activsion or Rockstar for the slaughter of russians.

Its the Resident Evil 5 effect all over again...

(Calling Capcom racist because the game took place in Africa)

Great blow, and $1600 don't exactly go together. I'd rather see him try to get the game banned, so we don't have to look at it any more, sitting there in the pre-owned isle for $5 like some haggered old prostitute.

''Nobody will notice their money is missing!''

When will butt-hurt lawers realise that we don't necesserily see a race of people in videogames, we see people who we are allowed to kill. I'm equally happy killing Chinese, Russian, European, or American soldiers - some people just don't understand that videogames are escapism, we are portraying avatars, not sharing opinions with them. You know, that Lynch might be a drug addled sociopath who I wouldn't trust to butter a slice of bread, but damn his political viewpoints just speak to me... come on butt-hurt-China-lawyer-dude, get a fucking grip and stop assuming gamers are mindless idiots.

Seems that Japan has a better sense of humour than China. I mean, there was an episode of The Gadget Show recently in Japan, featured a new girly car called 'Lovery' - that's fricken genius!

Man, Naughty Dog will have a lot to answer for should any other nation get wind of this - I mean, how many nationalities and races has Nathan Drake massacred?

A third person shouter game sounds more interesting than this game probably was...

So outside of having every form of media boycott China for fear of being sued... what exactly is this guy's aim?

It does, doesn't it...

Some people want China's economy to fail and then for there to be a revolution in the country...

... Personally I think those people are mad.

China has a large and growing Nationalist movement. Currently there are foot soldiers and hackers. Chinese nationalist lawyers would be a worrying development. I'm not suggesting that these groups at currently related but... It could easily be done as their view is China is the best, but most suppressed country in the world and only due to outside powers holding it back...

You may think this is funny but I don't... and I have a really dark sense of humor...

Had that been intentional it would have been quite funny, as Kane and Lynch spend the vast majority of the game screaming at each other.

That's only because they switched sides in halo 2 we all know that was the out court settlement.

I found this hilarious when I read it last night on Sankaku Complex, and I still find it hilarious now. I think this is more because of the grudge the two countries hold against each other, and not really because of anything else. Any excuse to complain, eh?

Oh that image has made my day. Bravo good sir, bravo.

yes, they should have had put in more sweat shops, mordern slavery, organ harvesting of prisoners (which includes excessive use of the death penality), and chinese medicine with more powdered babies

it's - set - in - CHINA!! what did you expect to be shooting at?!
that's a little typical isn't it? see the chinese treated the same way gun fodder are treated in any other game and only now do you cry foul.

$1600? Mere pennies to Squeenix, may as well just pay the bloke and move on or ignore the guy and move on.

normally i'd chide you for fanning the flames, but honestly, you're absolutely right.
i mean, i don't care for "peoples", i think pride on account of one's birth country in any sense is just dumb and outdated, and i judge everyone as an idividual. but really, if you play by this lawyer's rules and judge the chinese (unfairly) as a whole, the place is just fucking horrible! the portrayal of chinese forces in this game is the least of his worries!

I bet if all the Chinese people were replaced by white people it would be OK. Doesn't anyone understand? You can only kill scores of white people. Anything else is racist bad, mmkay?
I don't hear crying about all the Nazi's killed in the all WW2 games.

Why are game developers sued over stupid crap like this? Movies have far more disturbing content than any game and I rarely hear anything about it.

I killed loads of people in Hong Kong in Deus Ex, and Shanghai in Human Revolution. I'm sure those games must have something against China too.

The killing of Chinese citizens is just one of many aspects of Dog Days worth Bitching about.

Yes Skyrim WAS rather enjoyable!

This is fairly typical behavior in China actually. The mentality is very much China vs the World (led by America).

I suspect that he really just hated the game and wants to be reimbursed for time wasted.

No they shouldn't, this is bullshit and he knows it. SE should bring down the hammer on these frivolous lawsuits as well as anyone should.

here's my preferred rebuttal to people like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssC77hapv0g

China is pretty much the most backwards, tyrannically ruled bomb of a first world country. Poverty is common place, the rich rape the people for all their worth and the "government" goes to great lengths to murder silence and arrest anyone who speaks up. They have the highest ratio of executions of any country on Earth and an utter joke of a criminal justice system, all but ensuring innocent people and anyone the government doesn't like go missing or have their head blown off on a daily basis. They give new meaning to the term political prisoner. Nothing that comes from that country surprises me.

And and I'd well bet China is one of the more racist and xenophobic nations of people on Earth as well--irony.

$1600? That's it? I make that in two months. Why the fuck do we care about this?

EHKOS:
$1600? That's it? I make that in two months. Why the fuck do we care about this?

It's the principle, and the precedent. Precedent means a lot in law courts. If he wins here he will have free rein to do so continually for higher prices and win claiming precedent.

Have fun dieing before Square Enix even goes to court!

Specially over $1600, the court fees will be more than that wouldn't they? All they have to do is threaten to drag this out and he'll end up in the red.

Now if he was doing it because it was a horrible excuse for a game as well, then we could take that shit to Kickstarter and get some reparations.

Though really, China doesn't need any help fucking up it's own image, they're doing it quite well themselves.

Grey Carter:
"If I am victorious, it will establish a precedent allowing us to sue others - we will be able to strike a great blow against foreign companies who think they can insult China,"

Wait what? So this guy thinks you can sue anyone who insults you?

I'll be right back guys I have to go sue anyone who ever made a ginger joke.

Let me get this straight .
This guy wants money because a game offended his race ... WTF ?
I didnt knew China was a lawyer .
