One thing I did discover on your submission guidelines page was this:

The Escapist is proud to present the most heavily edited and reviewed content in the field of online videogame journalism. ...

When your draft is submitted on or before the due date, you will receive an email confirming it was received and that everything is in good order. Your article will then go through a rigorous editing, proofing and fact-checking process before being returned to you, usually a week or two before publication. The editor of your article may request that changes or revisions be made, and will give you a date by which you will need to submit another draft.

So just to clarify for future reference, do you have people correcting minor errors like the slightly altered name or is Susan correct when she says you don't do anything like that? Most news sites tend to employ a sub-editor to help with clearing up grammar and the odd typo, I'd be very surprised if a site of this size didn't have anything resembling that.

Well, commissioned features (which is from where you are pulling that) are very different from news posts. Due to their infrequency, we are able to devote a ton of time to editing them (and by "we," I mean Susan Arendt). As far as the news, because we don't have the manpower/time to comb every single post prior to publication, we expect a ton from our writers in terms of producing high quality work with only a minor need for edits. Usually, when I or one of the editors glances through news, the most we will generally find is an occasional missing preposition or letter. If I ever saw one of our seasoned writers calling Miyamoto something like Meeamoto, I would virtually bop his or her virtual nose with my virtual squeaky toy hammer - a grim fate, indeed.

Who are the ones who got the jobs?

We're still working on the final roster, but I'm sure you'll start seeing new bylines on the site here shortly :-D

whoops completely missed this one lol
though in the near future I'll probably find myself in a better position to be looking for such an opportunity :) can't wait to see what doors open up

Mmkay, so that's a definite "no" on my part. That's cool. It kinda sucks that I won't get to find out exactly what I did incorrectly, but seeing as how I wasn't really expecting a reply anyway, it isn't all that disappointing. xD

Looking back on it...I was probably a bit too personal and opinionated with the rewrite. Most news stories are meant to be really blank-slate and unbiased, so I probably could have done that part a little differently, and made the article less about my reactions and more about the news itself.

Then again, I never was good with telling "just the facts". The vast majority of my other works would fall into the "Opinion" section of the paper regardless of the subject, so maybe that's where my strength (or comfort) lies.

Hmm...either way, congrats to those who did make it. I'm hoping to see some new bloods bringing me the most interesting news in gaming soon. :)

As for me...well, when I'm not feeling either too lazy or too busy with my job and/or my hobby, I'll probably submit an article or two. We'll see if I've improved any at that point. ;P

Byline? What's that?

It's exactly what it sounds like. A line that says who the story is written by.

We can start our own news site! With blackjack! And hookers!

So to summarize/translate for the layman:

"We couldn't hire the hundreds of people who applied for the two or so positions we had available. Instead, we can take free ideas from the community and use it for our own purposes! Want to contribute with no credit back to you whatsoever?"

Uh... Gonna say no. But, thanks for trying! Good luck with the new hires, and I hope they turn out good articles.

If I apply and I get the job will I get paid or get conned out of my money like everyone else that works for the Escapist?

So, to re-summarize for factual accuracy:

"We couldn't hire the hundreds of people who applied for the few positions we had available. Instead, because there are so many talented writers among you, we would like to invite you to pitch featured articles to us instead. Features pay $250, and are fully credited to their respective author, as evidenced by the terms outlined in the link I provided in the update above, and by the giant byline seated within every feature this website has ever published."

And thanks for the well wishes, I have a lot of faith that they will!

Aw man, I completely missed this. I think I must have been on vacation or something, that sucks. Not that I'd think I would necessarily have stood a chance, but I would have loved to give it a go, if anything to just hone my writing skills. Will you be doing this again? I realise your spots are probably full for the time being, but maybe in a year or so?

Well, I can say with quite a bit of confidence that we will be hiring writers again someday, though it would be impossible for even us to know exactly when. Sometimes it happens more than once a year, other times it's much longer; it totally depends on when our writers choose to move on. When we do need more talent, however, we'll be sure to let you guys know!

Ah. Now I look like an ass. Sorry!

what if I told you that I though there was two new Pokemon games for a second. Then I read the article. :(

Do they pay regularly?
