Fans Piece Together the Halo 4 Box Art

image

Like a jigsaw puzzle, but with super soldiers.

It's always fun to get a first glimpse at the box art for a highly anticipated upcoming game. It's a sneak peek all on its own, and a taste of just how the publisher is intending to market this game to the masses. But while anybody can just send out a press release with various image files attached, Microsoft and 343 Industries did something cool with that Halo 4 box art: They made their fans put it together.

By that I don't mean that they made their fans design the box art, of course - that would just be asking for trouble. Halo fans were sent one of 32 image fragments that each made up a portion of the box art, and collaborated with other fans on sites like NeoGAF to work the whole thing out. And work it out they did.

Frankly, I think this box art is fantastic. It's Master Chief as we know him, suited up and in an "ass-kicking is thoroughly imminent" pose. On the other hand, he's in a pose reminiscent of the Halo: Reach Armor Lock ability, suggesting that perhaps somebody has just failed to kick his ass, and a reciprocal kicking thereof will shortly be on its way.

Also, there's some big, blue... thing in the sky that looks like it's tearing everything around it to shreds and drawing it in. Maybe that's what Master Chief is about to fight. Does it even have an ass to kick? I don't actually know, but I'm sure somebody in the comments will answer that question for me.

A cool little mini-ARG with fans reveals a snazzy-looking piece of box art. This was a win all around, I'll say.

Looks snazzy. When is it coming out?

If this artbox is the real deal, then I have to say that this is the best artbox for a Halo game ever.

Good move, new studio, good move.

Still not excited for the new game, but there you go.

So Master Chief will be fighting Micheal Bay's Decepticons? Sweet!

For those who want a refresher:

ODST's still my favourite, both game and box art.

wow, this looks really nice.
i mean i don't own an xbox and think halo peaked at... well halo i am not looking forward to the game but this looks really nice it doesn't feature obnoxious amounts of blue and orange.

Really good box art, looks more interesting than most games, easily the best of the Halo's

Really?

Cool boxart, and interesting way to release it. Good job, whoever's in charge of that.
Still not particularly excited about the game though.
Haven't bought any of the previous games either.

Well, he pretty much said everything for me. I'll enjoy the games people come up with in Forge, and I can't wait to see what Rooster Teeth will do with the new engine and tools, but that's about as far as my interest goes.

No, John, the blue thing IS the ass.

OT: What can I say? It looks awesome.

Personally Halo peaked the second the flood appeared.

Up until that second it is one of my favorite FPS' ever.

Again speaking personally, I know half the planet loves the series, no criticism for anyone who does.

You sir, are very correct.
OT: I think its great box art.

Halo's always had epic box art. Now I pray that 343i will have a game equally so to meet the bar Bungie's set for over a decade.

I can easily imagine to those who put the pieces together were humming to this.

And yes I play too much of Professor Layton games.

Well done them. Go devs for having fun with it.

Awesome cover art, best Halo one yet.

This is why my hope for Halo 4 just went up, little things are what make Halo special

good cover art but will the game be any good.

WHAT DID YOU DO TO WHEATLEY?!

OT: Nice box art, probably still not buying it though.

Now that's box art to be proud of! I'm seriously considering making this a day one purchase.

Fantastic cover art, I hope the game is just as good.

Really nice. While a lot of people seemed to bitch about John's different armor making no sense from a story perspective, seeing as he was trapped on a ship, I really like his new uniform. Looks just as strong as the MK 6 and yet more flexible.

You are now aware that the game will never live up to that box art.

I just hope they kept trying with this one. I liked halo reach the most because it had actual variety, (admittedly cliched) characters, and a few instances of inventive gameplay. Halo has a very nice formula but they never really got creative with it until reach.

*deleted*

If it's as good as Reach, then I'll buy it straight away.

My only concern is their won't be any good characters besides Cortana. That was the thing I loved about Reach's campaign, plenty of interesting characters, mixed with a bit of loneliness at times.

Honestly I think just having Cortana could work if they make Master Chief a little more vocal during gameplay. Having it focus on the interaction and relationship between those two characters has the potential to tell a pretty interesting character story.

Having a few extras would be nice though.

Also we need an ODST sequel. Make it its own series of squad-based shooters. ODSTs are way more interesting a concept than SPARTANs.

Halo 4: Master Chief vs. Unicron.

He needs the Matrix of Chiefdom. Cortana can live in it.

I thought the ODST's were just a load of roughneck thrill seekers, that's the impression I got from The fall of Reach(?) novel anyway.

The game...really doesn't portray them like that. I'd compare them to the Delta Squad team in Republic Commando, except voiced by half of the cast of Firefly (Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin). They've all got their own characters to them and the fact that they're not supposed to be one person armies like SPARTANs (even SPARTAN IIs like Noble Six) means there's generally more options open for squad banter so making an ODST Squad-based shooter title makes sense.

Nathan Fillion's character actually has a chance to show up in Reach for a brief cameo New Alexandria as one of the airborne escort missions.

Another soldier striking a pose. Also the background is too crowded. Not as good as Halo 3's. Though I'm not at all a fan so whatever.

Same here. The box art looks quite good... different to a lot of modern shooter's box arts recently, and its good that it shows off the sci fi aspect. Reach's box art could have just been for any modern fps.
This pushed me from a 50% chance to buy to a 75% buy.

Don't get me wrong I think it sounds like a great idea, but I would have thought they would turn out more like the roughneck squad from Starship Troopers than the Bad Company from the BF series (which I thought were great).

This is all of course not going to turn out like we hope even if it does get made, but we can dream.

Having had studied videogame box art both as a recreational pass time for about five years and at an academic level this past year, I can safely say that this is the best I've ever seen from the industry. Just... fucking... wow. I really hope this marks a change in how box art is done, because I'd buy this just to put on display. In fact, can I get a poster of this someplace?
