He's mad.

But he's a genius.

I love you Peter.

Matthew94:
I have to say, this is fucking genius.

I bet someone like Notch will buy it though.

naw, he's gonna stick with his diamond pickaxe....... lol

But in all seriousness, there have been people that have dropped thousands on mobile and tablet micro transactions, http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107662-Eight-Year-Old-Girl-Blows-1400-on-Smurfberries

so I wouldn't put it past anyone....... ( except me because I have never had 77k in my life.)

The most interesting thing will not be whether or not someone will buy the diamond chisel - I think that's inevitable, if the cube takes long enough to open. What will be a decent test is how long after opening the object that it takes the winner to disclose to the world what he or she has won.

Can you imagine the buildup of tension if they hold fire from announcing this for a week or two?

Its a good idea up to the point where three weeks in a team of hackers just breaks into the cube anyway, or copies the coding for the diamond chisel and there winds up being about a million of the things. Other than that though it would be interesting to see if someone on the planet has enough disposable income that they can spend $77, 838 on a complex series of ones and zeroes, but I don't think Bruce Wayne would waste money on a video game.

Interesting or horrifying? I truly do not know...

I can see where this is going. Crazy rich guy/ crazy community team up to buy this ---> announcement of Molyneux's next game is in it ---> in Molyneux's next game treasure chests will cost real money to open (more if they look fancier), because he is now convinced that consumers are just THAT retarded. Fuck this guy AND his game.

Whatever is inside the cube it is probably not likely to be worth 50,000.

Methinks this is less of an experiment and more of an evil scheme.

EHKOS:

Ruairi iliffe:
All i Can honestly say to that at the moment is

"What's in the box, Peter, What's in the box!?"

Whatever it is, it's over-hyped.

Of course it's going to be over-hyped, It's Peter Molyneux, the man seems to run off it for better or worse.

Molyneux you fucking genius. I'd happily vote for Molyneux to be prime minister, we need a new government a Peter Molyneux government.

"OH MY GOD IT'S OPEN oh hey it's just a dick drawn on a piece of paper."

And a new meme was born. The box is a lie.

DVS BSTrD:
I know I won't be chipping in to find out!

HEYOOO

If I was rich (Like billionaire rich) I would probably go for it, but unless one of my fantasies manages to take over as my real life, I'll just pass this on up

....what?

"It's an experiment! We're explorers in the mind of humanityyyyyyyyeah!"
*counts money*

-is pretty much all I heard.

I've actually always enjoyed the Fable games and most of PM's stuff in general so it hurts to see this honestly.

Yeah, or you could find out on youtube approx. 40 minutes after the game ends when the winner uploads it.

To be fair, though, if i was massively rich i'd buy the diamond pickaxe, win the game thing and then tell everyone i know exactly what was in the cube.
And then never reveal it.

HOLY COW. They actually beat the Railworks DLC list, a feat I thought was impossible.

Obviously, the box will be revealed to contain our own universe. Or more likely the most recent photo from NASA of the known universe, as well as a small presentation where Molyneux talks about how great curiosity is and I eat my own hat in rage.

The person I imagine to buy the diamond pickax is either a rich idiot or some kind of supervillain who will make sure that only he knows what's inside the box and taunt the world with that info.

So either Bruce Wayne or the Joker, really.

Okay, first impression when I saw this thread, someone's doing that SmashLovesTitanQuest thing from the Mass Effect Three 'DLC' (It was merch, but it came with DLC on the side) and just grandstanding it.
Second impression was that this is a very clever experiment and I would love to see it in action.

So, let's be entirely clear about this. Molyneux's going to conduct a series of 'social experiments' then use these results to release an overly-ambitious, disappointing, unfinished and broken game? Sorry Pete, but as much as I like you, you've exhausted my faith in you.

Rabid Toilet:
I'm just waiting for someone to buy the diamond chisel, and then someone else manages to get the finishing blow anyway.

Now THAT would be irritating.

So, in other words, Curiosity is better than the entire Fable IP.

Also, you know who is probably watching how this shapes up with bated breath?

I think that pretty much sums up my reaction to this little piece of lunatic awesomeness.

Of course, Mythbusters proved that particular scene to be impossible...

Imbecilic and impossibly greedy, but someone's going to be stupid enough to do it, so how can I truly fault the man?

I'll still call him a twat, though. It'd be nice to see human experiments in generosity or kindness.

I think this is one DLC I'll be hoping is on steam summer sales.

At like 99% discounted price if possible.

But the experiment needs a high priced object to see how far people will go to sate their curiosity.

Because that's the form he wants the "experiment" to take, yeah. Money isn't all is takes to test a person's curiosity.

nikki191:

Scars Unseen:
What's inside? I hope it's a dead cat.

or a cat thats half alive and half dead until someone observes it

Zombie Cat!

Yeah, right? Apparently showing genuine (non-malevolent) emotions is really hard for John Riccitiello.

Here's the catch: only the player who lands the last fracture before the cube cracks open will get to see what's inside.

Who will then put it up on Youtube.

I'm curious to know who wants to give Pete all that money. Maybe they'll become new best friends! They can take their sims on long walks on a digital beach together.

I'm glad I don't care about this guy. Really I am. I mean, if I thought I could get someone to pay that much cash for the chance to see something that to me was meaningless, I'd have a hell of an ego! I'd worry about Peter if he were my friend. Of course he will prove one thing, there are still a great many fools yet to be separated from their money. But be careful world! Peter's comin' round, and soon all them fools and all that cash will be separated.

I remember the good old days when Molyneux led a company (bullfrog) that actually made games, good games, games that I still take out and play now and again. Games like Populous, Syndicate, Dungeon Keeper and Theme Hospital.

Also, as many others has pointed out, if the parameters of this experiment is to be taken at face value then it is a giant fail. That there exists at least one person where the ratio of income/holdings vs expenditure is large enough to buy it at that price without making a noticable dent in their wallet is not exactly something that we need Molyneux to prove. It proves absolutely nothing about the power of curiousity. Also, what will he do with the money? To me it seems like an easy money-grab with minimal ammount of effort on their part disguised as an experiment.

It's not a money making scheme, huh? You could have fooled me. Why didn't you make it a difficult and involved process? ... No its just about the money. Thats why your fishing for 80 grand.

Ah but will they? Several people in this thread have declared they would sit on the result for kicks.

Nobody knows for sure, but we're definitely going to find out

Not if enough people are like me and probably will pass on this game because it sounds incredibly boring. I find the gimmick of only one person getting the ending curious enough to look it up on Youtube and nothing else. Beyond that, it is not worth my time.

It's like the ending to Fatal Beauty, a Whoopi Goldberg movie from the 80's. I had rented once and watched it right up to the beginning of the climax and then due to circumstances had to return it without seeing the ending. Over twenty years later, I still do not care how it ended. Curiosity sounds a lot like that.
