Hitchhiking photographer, Ray Dolin, shot himself, apparently in order to drum up publicity for his new book.

It was a beautiful story, it really was. Professional photographer, Ray Dolin, was hitchhiking through Montana, when a random stranger in a pickup truck shot him in the arm. The best part? Dolin was hitchhiking as research for his memoir, entitled The Kindness of America. 52-year-old, Lloyd Danielson, was arrested and charged with felony assault, while Dolin got to sit back in a local hospital, enjoying the free publicity and public sympathy his brush with ironic mortality brought him.

Now it turns out that the story wasn't so ironic after all. On Friday, Dolin admitted that he'd shot himself in the arm and made the rest of the tale up. He didn't give a reason for the whole sorry mess, but locals officials believe it was a "desperate act of self-promotion."

The charges against Danielson have been dropped, though he's still potentially on the hook for driving under the influence. The authorities are considering whether or not to charge Dolin over the incident.

"I had the worst feeling he was telling me the absolute truth," said Sheriff, Glen Meier, describing his interview with Danielson. "I kept telling him that we are seekers of the truth and we are going to work very hard to find out the truth of this incident.

"It was a great moment when I sent someone up to the jail to tell him he had nothing to do with it."

I feel used.

Yeah, that must be a kick in the gut for people who believed this guy. Glad the man who was unfairly jailed is now free to go.

This guy was willing to send an innocent man to jail, perhaps even for years, in order to promote his own book?

This guy is evil.

So, it appears he really should add a 'C' to his website's name now... and probably a 'U' and an 'N' and a 'T'.

Yeah this guy is scum. He really needs to be locked up.

Same with the other guy for his drunk driving.

So the guy who writes about the kindness of America is a fraud who exploits kindness and framed someone for assault with a firearm.

I still think this story is quite ironic.

[Smart]Ah, the old shoot yourself in the arm and frame a nearby drunk guy trick![/Smart]

Whoever said there's no such thing as bad publicity clearly wasn't thinking hard enough.

Well, it's very American of him. Very strong work ethic here.

I guess it was just too ironic to be mere coincidence.

my thoughts exactly, actually gave me the chills.

There is not enough facepalm in the world... reminds me of the feed dump story about the man who cut off his own foot in order to avoid working.

Has he ever heard of the story of the boy who cried wolf?

He is so screwed if he is ever actually in a real emergency now.

He needs to go back home.

Damnit. If you can't count on Americans shooting random strangers, what can you count on these days?!

Somehow the phrase "Would you kindly" suddenly gets a whole new meaning...

The sad thing is that this has gotten a *LOT* more people to have heard of his book/project. It will do better just from sheer name recognition >_>.

DAY-UM!

thats some drama right there...

Once again, realists were proven right about how we see the world. Oh, the irony makes me smile.

You could say he was ... gunning for attention. *puts on sunglasses*

This incident makes me inclined to throw his book in a fire. I'm pretty sure if his publisher gets wind of this, they won't want to be associated with such a lying bastard.

Not just you we all are, what the hell is happening with America these days?

That is why you should hire proper PR instead of doing it yourself. A proper PR person would have shot their client for them and ensured no-one got banged up for it either.

Gotta admit though, guy must be pretty dedicated to shoot himself in the arm just to hopefully get some attention for his book which may or may not actually help it sell any better.

pretty sure I wouldn't do that.
Also, i don't think he seriously planned on letting a dude go to jail for his stunt. WHen he heard that they caught someone he was probably sitting there going 'crap crap crap crap crap crap...'

what a tweest!

Next up; He actually shot himself through the head and died but doesn't know it.

Well, I mean... Montana. You probably only need to extend your arm to grab a drunk redneck with a gun there. He could've known.

Although I must say I'm a little surprised that something was too ironic for the US to happen.

...And this setback for our hamburger eating friends puts Japan back in nr 1 position on the leaderboard of weirdest nation on the planet. ;-)

idiot. you dont try to launch a book career with a gunshot, you launch a rap career. Then the cops wont care enough to investigate

But he really shot himself in the foot there.

Or arm. Er.

Hey, he shot himself, we had NOTHING to do with it... this time!

Or.. he says he shot himself in the arm so the other guy would be off the hook so he could demonstrate 'the kindness of America'.

That was meant to be a dumb joke but it's actually almost plausible.

Ok how much do I have to pay you two to not become comedians?

Surprise level = 0.

captcha: describe Disney. Apparently, "jew haters" is an acceptable description :D

What a massive tosser. I hope critics universally pan this wanker's book by throwing it at his face!

People need to stop believing media outlets like the Escapist and start questioning news programs. Why people are willfully brainwashed is beyond me.

Think you'll start reporting the news with any more objectivity and professionalism after this? When you start a report with "A hitchhiker who was shot in the arm by a passing driver," you are going ahead and assuming you know the facts before the police have even come to any ultimate conclusion. A subversion of the legal system or assumed knowledge hardly make for news worthy of reading.

Wow. I'm feeling both respect and disgust towards that guy. On one hand, it's a brilliant trick, getting a lot of attention because of the irony. But then on the other hand, he was willing to get an innocent guy in prison just for that attention. Also, hypocrisy (it's close enough) being something I cannot stand, the fact that a person writing a book called: "The Kindness of America" is a massive American scumbag is most infuriating.
