Diehard Webcomic Fans Invent Fake Anime

Never underestimate a bored internet fandom.

If you aren't familiar with web series MS Paint Adventures - in particular its latest installment, Homestuck - then know this: The Homestuck fandom is second only to fans of Japanese shooter series Touhou Project as the craziest and most devoted fandom on the internet. Case in point: When series creator Andrew Hussie announced that he would be taking a temporary hiatus from the comic in order to prepare for San Diego Comic-Con, the fans erupted in a flurry of creation.

Specifically, they created their own anime.

Now, that's a bit of a misnomer: The fans haven't actually animated anything outside of a few animated .gifs. What they have created, however, is an overwhelming pretense that the story they love isn't a webcomic made by some dude from Boston, but a manga/anime series out of Japan - replete with a bunch of fake screenshots. We've gathered some of our favorites here.

What's impressive here is the commitment to verisimilitude. No, no such Homestuck anime exists, but the "screenshots" have appropriate subtitles, and the style and character expressions look authentic. Some of them even add the subtle watermarks of the various Japanese TV networks (or the YouTube UI for all of those who stream their anime online). Hell, some of the screens even have the compression/quality issues that anyone familiar with watching bootleg anime VHS tapes in the '90s might recognize.

All in all, the focus on creating actual believable screenshots or manga pages (terrible anatomy issues included) is what sets this fan project apart from mere fan art. Fans without artistic talent have also made fake Wikipedia articles referencing the nonexistent series.

Obviously, the next logical step is for Homestuck fans to follow in the footsteps of Touhou fans and actually make their own freaking anime.

If you ask me, this whole thing doesn't have nearly enough Kanaya.

Update: I stand corrected. There is an animated and voiced clip after all, albeit a short one.

This happened, like, yesterday. Did this get newsworthy that fast?!

That's...
really impressive.
I've avoided that webcomic because I already keep up with more than enough of them, but with this? I'm pretty sure I need to look into this now out of sheer obligation to their fandom.

How long before they make an anime of Homestuck fans spitting into a bucket and filming it at a Pizza Hut?

Best Green Day reference I've seen in quite some time.

OT: At some point, someone will reference Touhou and I won't immediately think of Lilithslave. For now, however...

...a bucket...?

CG: I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'D ASSOCIATE US WITH THIS SORT OF LOW-RENT PORNOGRAPHY.

carcinoGeneticist's computer has exploded from sheer rage.

You forgot to mention that the anounced hiatus is less then a week and a half.
(This is why I love homestuck, It's fans are amazing)

To give context, they talked Dante Basco into reading the entire thing.

That's the level of dedication that fandom is willing to pour into seemingly pointless endeavors.

If MLP:FiM doesn't make it past the dreaded 65-episode mark, the fans will make S4 themselves, mark my words.

I started reading Homestuck about 2 months ago because a girl I liked was into it. I thought it was going to be bland and uninteresting...I was wrong. If you've got a day or two with nothing to do, I recommend it. Just have to get through the first 2 Acts before it really picks up story-wise.

I gotta admit, seeing the different styles that they've adapted the series to is kind of interesting.

We're working on that already, actually.
Not as a whole series, though. The plan is just to make one episode set somewhere in the middle of the story, I believe.

Is this Homestuck thing an actual web comic or some shitty flash game? Went to the website and all I saw was a shitty flash game.

No idea what you saw. It's a webcomic, and you advance the pages by clicking the commands, usually either looking like ==> or >*insert command here*

It's an actual web comic. It uses a combination of static images, .gifs, Flash videos, and interactive games to illustrate the events of the story, and dialogue takes place entirely through second-person narration ("You do this", or "you do that", where "you" is the character in the panel) or through "pesterlogs", which are basically chatlogs like on an IRC.

It is currently 5,237 pages long. The first page can be found here.

there is not enough keyboard in the world to express my want.

Could you direct me to the webcomic? All I'm seeing is a flash game about some character (that you name) who likes old sci-fi movies and paranormal lore

This is it.

If it's what you were looking at before, allow me to explain. Homestuck is a bit less of a conventional webcomic than you might be led to believe. There's lots of different media involved. You follow the pages and you read the text under the images given, including the text chats (which is where all the dialogue and most exposition takes place), and sometimes there will be pages that use flash, and others that are even out-and-out simple games.

I'm fairly certain that you're being misled by the first couple pages, because it's kind of a parody of old point and click adventure games.

The comic is made in a style where it resembles a video game. Old RPG elements and etc, such as the naming thing. To advance in the comic, you simply click at the bottom, which serves the purpose of 'Commands' you would give in a game. You get used to it, and it's the source of a lot of jokes, like, how the inventory or 'Sylladex' works.

Neat! I'm eager to see where it goes from here...

Christ, I took a break reading the comic early this year and when I checked in a month later, more than a thousand pages show up. Now the fans are faking an anime. What next? Will it be an actual anime series with full voice acting next month?
A Full length feature film by this time next year?

Also with Touhou being the crossover powerhouse that it is, I'm rather surprised that there aren't that many crossovers with Homestuck. I mean one of the characters is a literal Maid of Time, that's an easy cross right there.

And it'll be indistinguishable from the normal show and having managed to snag all of the original voice actors. The only difference will be background characters having more given lines. And Derpy inexplicably becoming a main character.

In fact, with how utterly insane(in a good way... most of the time) the fanbase of this trinity, I'm waiting for that legendary three-way crossover.
There'd be a good chance the universe may implode because of it

Plus, Sanae is pretty much a Heir of Breath.

What I want to know is when the hell are we getting a live-action adaption of Problem Sleuth? Co-starring, of course, the Midnight Crew.

Also, this is pretty far from the first time Homestuck's been drawn in an anime/manga style.

It's still pretty damn awesome though. That goes without saying.

I completely lost the plot on Homestuck years ago, there's like thirty different "playable" characters now and I don't know who any of these people are and it's just kind of washing over me at this point, but that fandom is something else. The shear tonnage of artistic output, from some of the nicest people on the Internet, it's amazing.

Man, good to see some Homestuck on the Escapist. Soon enough it'll be changed to "FuckingEverythingYouLike.com"

And yes, more Kanaya would be good. There's this:

It terrifies me that this is true. And the quality will barely falter.

Saw this on tumblr, did a 'oh that's cool', continued on with day.
As always I have to be 'in it' to be more impressed, but I always admire fans that go the extra distance. These are the people that if they just take one step further or just get a shot, are the creators of our entertainment in the future.

God why the hell is this a news story on here.

For some reason 'fake anime screenshots' are rising, but they've been around for a very, very long time. This is not newsworthy, this is the farthest thing from newsworthy.

If you wanted to do a news story, do one last October when Newgrounds was crashed because of the comic, but not because a few tumblrs wanted to make art.

Also, Hussie isn't from god damn Boston, Boston is not all of Massachusetts.

If I had to guess it's because Friday and particularly Friday afternoon posts tend to be more "fun" stuff fr the weekend.

From what I'm seeing there's a LOT of this art recently in the past few days so maybe that's what separates it from the stuff before?

It's because Homestuck went on a hiatus about three days ago. Since then, literally hundreds of this style of fan art have materialized. Its the sheer volume, in that time frame, and the fact they're doing it out of plain-ol BOREDOM that make it impressive.

...I hate anime now.

Like, seriously.

Technically one person made a screenshot just as a fun thing and said it was from an anime as a joke. Then everyone jumped on and made it huge. Personally I think it's creative, but it's no longer funny.
Nothing was planned, this wasn't some "let's spam tumblr with this stuff" thing. People found an idea creative and amusing and wanted to participate in it.
As for it actually getting an anime. That's highly unlikely, as this is an american series, and it's more likely for it to be made into a series here than in Japan.

Why is this considered newsworthy?

It's one of the most obnoxious Tumblr bandwagons to plague the Homestuck fandom in ages.
And that's fucking saying something.

This isn't something planned, it's just the result of the Tumblr part of the Homestuck fandom bursting with people who will jump at any bandwagon they see in the hope of getting as many likes/reblogs as possible without having to do much creative thinking themselves.
