Sega is bringing Phantasy Star Online's first major successor to Western audiences.

Though there's no shortage of free-to-play massively-multiplayer games available to English-speaking gamers online, there's now another one on its way that may raise a few eyebrows. Just a few days after its official release in Japan, Sega has confirmed that it's bringing MMORPG Phantasy Star Online 2 to the West. The game, which first entered alpha in mid-2011, is heading to US and Europe in 2013 on the PC.

Phantasy Star Online 2 is the successor to cult classic Phantasy Star Online, released on Dreamcast over a decade ago. The sequel takes cues from the original, which combined action- and rhythm-oriented combat with a class system and included both offline and online play modes. The original classes and races are specifically returning to the sequel, as does a combat assistant called the MAG. You'll also see familiar creatures from the original, including those accursed but adorable Rag Rappies.

One of the new features Sega boasts is robust character customization - you can change the size and shape of any body part and your character's overall height and weight, unlike many contemporary games where only one basic character model is used per gender and race. The character creator even allows you to rearrange body parts if you're the robotic CAST race.

Although there are planned phone and Vita ports in Japan, there's no word on whether these will also be localized after they're released. There are also no details yet on exactly how the microtransaction system, called "Arcs Cash" in Japan, will work or what kinds of items will be on offer. Sega promises to reveal more details about the game in the coming months, which will likely appear on its new teaser site for the game.

I wonder how long we will have to wait for a official release date? I'm guessing it could be a while which is fine by me (I will be preoccupied with GW2 in a month soon).

Lookin really good, micro trans spooks me... but what doesn't these days... I just assume pay the box price and buy meaningful DLC as it becomes available. Just another one of those "wait n' see" deals I suppose.

Flip side of the coin, F2P is a lot easier on the wallet considering fielding the game on 3 systems for friends n' family. May work out after all...

Nice work Sega!

I heard through the grape vine that the localization for western markets is expected in and around first quarter 2013... so unless you want to hassle with applocale and brush up on your Kanji I think you'll be safe. ;)

Please let it be completely free. I don't even want it to need a box, just sign up and download.

Please let it be on Mac.

While I make demands, can we get another Sonic Game with the same tone and Gameplay as Sonic Adventure 2?

Whoa there ace! One miracle at a time! ;)

On that note, I have a sneaking suspicion that Sega has started to break code on what games they need to be putting out, so with a little luck maybe they have their head on straight and the hits will just on coming.

This is a game that I will happily buy parallels and windows 7 for. I don't even care how much it costs, I enjoyed the fuck out of Phantasy Star Online ep 1 and 2, and will play the fuck out of this.

All about them androids!

wait, does that mean that i can put install skullguns AND foot launchers? that would be automatic game of the year.

I'M THROWING MONEY AT THE SCREEN!! I'M SO EXCITED FOR THIS I'M JUST GONNA TYPE IN ALL CAPS!!

I am SO excited! dduohfsklfklsd g

AAAHHHH IM EXCITED!!! ITS ALL I CAN SAY!

2013 for europe? well you're to kind.

I'm hoping my sentence construction didn't confuse you - US and Europe will, as far as I know, be getting the same release date. Certainly the same release year. It'll just take a while to translate all the text normally associated with MMORPGs.

Yes Please. Mac

I know I won't have the time to play this, but I still want it so much. I loved PSO.

Wait, but Mac owners don't play games. They are those artsy scarf-wearing designer types.

I have to say it looks absolutely Phan-tastic!

I hope I have as much fun with it that I had with Phantasy Star Universe :P

Though finding time for it will be tricky.

Well in japan it's pc only. So it's probably just going to be PC.

Your pun makes me want to hurt you so bad...
'twas a good one.

OT: I hope they do have a Vita release, be interesting.

The character creator/benchmark that was on the Japanese site a few months ago worked just fine for me without screwing around with anything. Just install and run and it's like magic. Nice to know that it's officially coming out in the rest of the world in a language I understand though. I hope it's more optimized by then than the benchmark tool was, because that was a little disappointing. The in-game visuals look like something a few years out of date, but if I maxed out all the settings, shadows in particular, it dropped below 60fps for me at times (at 1920x1200 on a 6850 overclocked ~10%).

Turning shadows down a bit makes performance go waaaaaay up and only looks a little bit worse in most situations though, and the character creation really is as crazy as they say it is. There is a slider for just about everything imaginable, including weird things like the proportion of the length of your upper arms to your forearms. If the actual gameplay is any good, I will play the hell out of it. My friend and I have been waiting a decade or so for this.

Its easier to measure my PSO episode 1 and 2 play time in days.
I have rarely been this excited for a game.
2013 cannot come fast enough.

And for those interested, yes it is truly F2P, no box, just a download.

q-q-q-q-q-quadra post

Now all they need to do is stop being so frackin stupid with Valkyria Chronicles and release 3 here. What I've seen of the cardgame makes it look like a joke, and 3 is supposed to be closer to 1 in terms of attitude.

I lost so much of my life to phantasy star online on the dreamcast. Shame my lappy wont run it.

Hey that is nice to know, may see if I can procure an install and check it out.

In that department I don't really hope for all that much... guess we will just be tinkering with profiles and benchmarking for the sweet spot. The shadows sounds like a memory threading "issue", makes me wonder what engine they are running it on... if it's some home-grown.

We all feel the same way over in our part of the world. With some luck be seeing you in game!

So did I just miss a memo about not talking about it or are there actually PSO fans who aren't already all over the JP OBT of this game ?

"There are also no details yet on exactly how the microtransaction system, called "Arcs Cash" in Japan, will work or what kinds of items will be on offer. "

Made me chuckle because there are people already purchasing and using AC. The stuff you can buy right now is the usual fare of boosters and vanity items. Although you do need AC to make characters on other ships(servers) after your first one.

I guess I'll give it a try but with so many free MMO's I think Sega has waited to long to make this move.

Offline mode? Free to play!? FUCK YES! I expected to have to dodge this title because I assumed it was subscription and online-only but yes~! FUCK YES~! HAHAHAHA! Best news on the Escapist EVER!

:'D

Edit: Give me a console port with splitscreen co-op and I'll love this game forever. *Still occasionally plays PSO*

Jeff Gerstmen said it's a pile of wank. He tends to reflect my feelings, so I'm not excited about this.

Sega implied that the Western version may use a different system:

SEGA Blog:
There are, of course, lots of details to be revealed about this model - we know everyone has questions about how "Free to Play" will work for the Western version of PSO2, so stay tuned!

Since they made a point of mentioning it in the announcement, I didn't want to assume they'd be using exactly the same system. It's even possible - though unlikely - that they'll eschew microtransactions entirely for some other model. On the other hand, they could just mean details like what kinds of payment methods they'll take.

Danzavare:

The sentence about offline mode was referring to Phantasy Star Online so people who didn't know much about the game could understand why it was unique. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be an offline mode or rhythm-based combat in Phantasy Star Online 2, which works a lot more like a traditional MMORPG. It's possible that those things may happen, but details from Sega were scarce about the gameplay specifics and I don't believe either are currently true for the Japanese version. They may add in offline mode for phones and Vita, though.

Never actually played the original, but I'm interested in this one...Probably won't bite right away though - I'm nothing if not fashionably late to every MMO ever and I most likely won't buck the trend this time either. MMOs aren't normally my thing, so I like to wait for a bit before getting involved in something that I might well wind up hating.

Fuck that! We got enough Sonic games to last us another decade and keep the rabid fanbase sated i think. What i demand is far greater yet simpler:

I WANT A NEW SHINOBI GAME ON CURRENT CONSOLES! I can't be the only one who want's to see this in our current gen graphics with refined gameplay:
