Hyperkin Resurrects the Game Genie ![]() You can now edit your PS3 save files with this new product using an old trademark. Back in the 80s, the Game Genie by Galoob was a physical hacking device that let you mess with the software loaded onto game cartridges. You plugged Super Mario Bros. 3 or whatever into the Game Genie, which then plugged into your NES, and if you input the correct code, you could become invulnerable or have unlimited raccoon flight. Nintendo fought the Game Genie, but it wasn't until the advent of game discs that use of the product lapsed. A peripherals company called Hyperkin - makers of some nifty products - purchased the trademark recently, and vowed to bring back the Game Genie. The first step is the Game Genie: Save Editor for PS3, which is available for purchase today for $33 US. The new Game Genie: Save Editor is essentially a USB flash drive loaded with software that lets you edit the save files for popular games. You grab the saves from your PS3, put it on your PC, use the Game Genie software to search for the right variables to edit, plug the drive back in to your PC and voila, instant gold profit. Hyperkin says the software will be able to handle many games such as Uncharted 3, Batman: Arkham City, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and that more titles will be added to the database in the future. "The Game Genie Save Editor for PS3 is a breakthrough for gamers everywhere," said Steven Mar, head of Hyperkin. "The Game Genie Save Editor allows for even the most novice gamers to breeze past the hard or boring parts of games, leveling the playing field for a more enjoyable experience." So for those of you with fond memories of glitching out the sprites in Mega Man or if you've spent years figuring out how to get endless gold in Final Fantasy like this guy, you can now tinker with your PS3 save files to your heart's content. Want to get a complete set of Daedric armor from the start in Skyrim? Pick up the Game Genie: Save Editor for PS3. You could also just play the game. Or, you know, get a decent PC rig and install some mods.
I'm glad they are bringing back the game genie. After you complete a game its fun to use cheats to mess around and enhance the experience.
Game Genie is a wish come true!
Thank God! I don't know why cheats for consoles have fallen by the wayside recently. Sure, you could blame achievements, but there are still plenty of cheats that will prevent you from getting the points if you used the code. I used to watch all through the credits for games just to get any special codes. They do enhance the game! I'll be buying one as soon as they have it for the Xbox 360. Would love to play through another run of Skyrim as a God from the very beginning.
Game Genie was my first hex editor! I had pages of home crafted Excitebike and Final Fantasy code blocks, and would often buy/rent games based on whether I had codes for them. :D
nice, that'd been handy ... like 2 years ago ... when i still had a PS3
Cool. Maybe they'll release one for the 360 too? It would be fun to mess around with Skyrim.
They had a Game Genie for the Sega Mega Drive too, you know. Why does hardly anyone in the gaming media these days acknowledge Sega's consoles? Not everyone owned a Nintendo product (and in some cases like me, still don't). Will also be interested in seeing if they make one for the Xbox 360. I play games for the enjoyment - not the "challenge". 'Cheating' helped me do that for games I otherwise would never have been able to complete much less still play to this day (The New Zealand Story, Curse, and Cyborg Justice on a working Japanese Mega Drive from 1990, for example).
This disgusts me. People too fucking lazy to learn how to play the game, so they cheat. If you're not good enough to beat the goddamn game, don't fuccking play it. Pretty damn simple.
Or, you know, the people who like to just screw around on games and don't play to win.
Especially since fewer games are offering in-game cheats/button codes/whatever you want to call them.
A lot of what used to be "cheats" and "unlockables" are now sold to the consumer.
It appears you can already edit save files for the 360. The problem being that Microsoft takes this sort of thing as serious business and you can get your account suspended/possibly banned. I didn't look too far into it (Largely because I have no intent to try), but...Ummm...Trod carefully.
Yes, that's the only reason someone would ever use cheat codes/editors/whatever.
Hopefully this will allow you to obtain the unavailable clothing in Skyrim such as the Greybeard robes and Sheogorath's suit. I only ever used the hacking software for event Pokemon unavailable in the UK when I had one.
:D Cheating in single player games is back in style?? Hooray, I can enjoy the plots, stories, and design of games I find tedious, boring, and stupendously aggravating, without all the annoyances! Now I can quickly breeze through the horrendously boring gameplay of games like Bayonetta and Dante's Inferno, and actually see how the other half of the game's story works out! When cheats started dying out, games were less fun. The ability to put in a few codes and stride around like an old testament god stomping on mortals and turning them to salt was infinitely more fun than wading through mediocre gameplay with tedious fights. Huzzah!
Wow thats awesome I was really hoping something like this would come back and it did.
I hope to see some PROPER cheats. There was something REALLY REALLY fun about turning our rocket launcher into a freaking machine gun in GTA that was just stupid fun...
The Game Genie is one of the best products ever released. But, I'm a little shocked we haven't had a bunch of people freaking out that its immoral or somehow going to ruin lives. Honestly the lack of cheats in alot of games today is what makes them absolutely boring beyond all comparison. If I wanted to be forced to do something I'd goto work or jail. I wouldn't look for that in a game. Here's hoping the Genie hits every system on the market soon.
Ah, I remember my good old AR2. I bought it because the compression disc for my memory card was broken, but I had a good time moon jumping and sprinting with a chainsaw in GTA and such. Good times... It's a shame Achievements ruined all this isn't it? (Well... I guess online play had a hand in it too... >.>)
You know, it still fucking amazes me that people can have such an opinion. So someone wants to mess around in a game; what's your fucking problem? The Escapist ran an article by someone describing how they had a fit because they saw someone use cheats. Get over yourself, no one is losing out, people are just having fun. ----------------
I'd love to agree with you, but Bayonetta? Not only do you have no taste but Bayonetta comes with an infinite health cheat enabled by default. You'll only get stone medals but you absolutely will progress.
I miss being able to mess around with your games. I understand not letting XBL games being hacked for the sake of being fair, but I hope that offline hacking and save editing can be more accepted and commonplace. If the user isn't online, it shouldn't matter, right? Bring on the Game Genie.
I love it can't wait for it, finally a reason to play games again, its not about making things easy IMO its all about customizing the game to your tastes!
Any particular reason why you're so defensive about the issue? If you don't want to use cheats/codes/glitches/exploits/whatever, hey, don't use them. Which is also "pretty damn simple," as you so elegantly put it. Besides, would you rather slog around trying to find resources for upgrades in ME2, or would you rather have everything you need right from the start, and can then spend your time on something more fun, like shooting Collectors in the dick?
Most 360 gamers use simple "save editors." They're kinda like mods but they only change the values within a save file, rather than alter the behavior of the game itself. Lemme tell ya, playing ME2 with max Paragon and Renegade bars made life so much easier. The best part about it? All you need is a computer of some kind with a USB port, a good program (like Modio or Horizon), and a simple thumb drive.
Counting down to Sony's inevitable lawsuit. What about you, guys?
So... its a hex editor with very specific functionality that is pre-programmed? Huh. I guess its interesting that they're bringing it back. My view of gaming has change a lot since back in the day though so I don't know how to feel.
Looks like someone didn't start gaming until the fifth or sixth generation, at the earliest. The game genie is a product of the 8 bit era, that survived into the 16 bit era. Back in those days, people who actually beat games were the stuff of playground legends, and I mean just having finished a single game once without a game genie was something to be /really/ proud of. By your metric, the vast majority of 80's and 90's gamers would have been completely unworthy of the hobby.
I just noticed they have a 3DS one that allows you to transfer saves and watch videos on it....I might have to invest in one. Also I still have my Sega Genesis one :D.
Mods nothing, you can just pull up the console in Skyrim and dump piles and piles of armor at your feet. Or sweetrolls. Whatever's the most efficient at clogging the halls at Winterhold College.
Really? Sony are okay with this? If they let us have these this is awesome. I'll assume it's similar to Action Replay, so I'll be getting this as soon as I can. I do doubt that Sony won't try and pull something though. If they'll ban us from modding our console, they'll ban us from modding our saves just as easily. (Oh my god, I can finally get 'round to completing FFXIII so I can play XIII-2. Hyperkin, I love you.)
Ah, the Game Genie. I remember this well. I practically glued it to my copy of Super Mario Bros 3. Truth be told, if you put me in front of a NES right now, I could probably remember some of the codes just by the noise that each digit makes when you input it; I seem to recall the infinite jump code being particularly melodious.
I always preferred GameShark... Sharks are just more interesting than Genies.
They could even expand upon this to allow modifications of the save file in a similar way as people on PC mod their games. At least, that's what I'd like. I feel console gamers are seriously left out, and restricts their creative desires. Still neat as hell either way.
Surprised nobody else mentioned this. I'm pretty sure this will mess up some EULA or other ruling that would make Sony kick their asses.
Too true, mate! My cousin owning a Game Genie was the only way that we beat some of those notoriously difficult games! (and not so hard games -- we WERE 4 and 6 years old at the time.) It was such a shame it broke before we could beat Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. [read: get past the 3rd level.] Man, the NES had SOOOOO many hard games.
You might wanna see a proctologist about that stick up your ass.
If you want to stop playing because you got stuck, that is up to you. I would much rather slip god mode on and be able to see the rest of the story.
Get PC version of your games. OR!.. i guess you could shell out 33$ and wreck your save files :) Seriously, though, regardless of what publishers say, your game is your own. You're entitled to play it however you please.
