Star Wars: The Old Republic Goes Free-to-Play

Wow, that was quick.

I've been playing the free-to-play version for the last two weeks and I so hooked enough that I was going to get a sub, but now I think I shall just wait till it goes fully free-to-play as I don't mind the few restriction they will be putting on it

-M

For me this doesn't seem to change much. They'll add a store with vanity shit I won't buy anyway and I can keep doing what I'm doing.

Also keep coming with these posts on the 'plight of the free player'. They're absolutely hilarious.

So storyline - free, bad ops and imbalanced P2P - sub.

Sounds like a win to me.

11 months.

Wow. Even when I was voicing my scepticism about SWTOR at the end of last year I gave it at least a year, possibly two, before it went F2P. Nice to see they've managed to exceed even my lowest expectations.

Ah, that felt good :)

Guys, no need to fret, Guild Wars 2 is out later next month!!!!!!!!!!! But yeah, if you're going to play this, DO NOT start with the Trooper story, it will honestly make you bored out of your mind after the first act.

Huh lots of people acting just as smug and asinine as the company they are mocking.

On the escapist?
SHOCKING.

cool, i hope the game runs for year so i can occasionally drop in and play a few levels for each class story.

This is nice, I wanted to play through the stories I heard they were alright.

It all comes tumbling down

tumbling down

tumbling down

Nothing drops paying customers in an MMO faster than letting all the free players in, because they are all trolls and 5 year olds obviously.

And nothing turns off free customers more than only getting the tiniest portion of the game and having to pay out the nose for EVERY single thing, just so the game can be called "free to play."

Its like saying that baseball is free to play, but if you want any bats or gloves and bases 2 and 3, then you need to buy them.

Personally I play a mmo where it really is free, but everyone has the same option to pay for things. However, you can use in game coins to buy the real money gold and items from other people. Sadly in recent years this has included the best gear in the game, and makes certain people pretty much faceroll everything, but you don't have to play with them.

You can enjoy everything the game has to offer, every quest and instance etc., without spending a penny if you want to. Though your time would be much better spent spending at least $50 one time and then you can still play for years for free.

It may be unbalanced for PVP, but if you play an mmo ONLY for pvp then I pity you. Especially if you pay a subscription for the privilege of owning pixels with your pixels so you can brag about it to other people's pixels.

OT I still have no desire to play ToR, as Starwars has long since faded out of my sphere of interest. The original trilogy and the clone wars cartoon were enough for me, I don't need to grind and deal with the usual MMO things in said universe. I don't think that doing so would make me like Starwars any more than I aoready do, and quite possibly a lot less.

So some of it's going to be free to play but the majority of the content is going to be locked unless you pay the subscription. Just like what FunCom did with Age of Conan. The free to play part is really going to be nothing more than an extended trial account.

I bet these people are regretting those tattoos right about now.

They are literal failure stamps

This amuses me. Though I do wonder what the limit on the amount of characters you can have is, as well if you are still able to use a speeder at all if you are a non-subscriber.

So all the singleplayer stuff that people wanted from a KOTOR sequel is now available? Fuck your micro transactions, but I might actually pick this up now. The MMO where I never have to deal with another player.

Thats one hurdle down. Now all they need to do is make Origin unnecessary to run it and I might actually play.

I had a sub and enjoyed the game but my attention span does not work well with MMO's, so I stopped playing while I still had two months worth of playtime left. I'll definitely check it out again since it's going free to play.

I still won't be coming back, cause I got a mmo coming out with no subscription and everything being available.

only 25 more days :D

The current free trial has 8 character slots. If they didn't limit it for that I don't think they're going to limit it further.

Get it straight from the site and you don't need Origin.

Bioware had some great ideas that I think should have done very well in an industry full of mindless raid grinding.

And then they stuck those ideas in a WoW clone. Bravo.

I'm interested, but my laptop cannot run TOR, sadly. The family computer might be able to, but getting access to it during school would be tricky. Shame. I actually committed the gamer sin of enjoying myself while playing it at my sister's house.

Wow, with the amount of times they asserted that TOR wouldn't be going free-to-play, they almost managed to make this suprising.

Ha ha, just kidding, this isn't even close to a suprise.

Too little. Too late. Maybe Cameron will make a movie about them one day too.

I am actually cool with this, my free month just ran out, so this will let me keep playing later this year.

This is a good thing from where I'm standing. the sooner MMOs move away from the bullshit monthly subscription model the better.

You do know that Freemium or "F2P"are usually more expensive than the Sub based MMOs? But the costs in these models are kind of hidden for the uneducated kind of people.

It all depends on the amount of free time you have. I might play an MMORPG for an hour or two a month. Subscriptions are a waste of money for me. Also there is a no cost start up and the frugal never HAVE to pay.

TripleDaddy:
Put that lightsaber down.

Ops are for closers.

What's my name? Farrck Yu. That's my name.

You know what it takes to do Operations?
It takes Thermal Detonators to do Operations.

Man I love Blake

cyvaris:
Brace yourselves, a shitstorm is coming.

Yeah. What's with all the butthurt?
People complaining that it's gone free. People complaining that it's not completely free. People complaining that the part they want isn't free.

Just another day in the Escapist's BAAAWWWW factory.

Honestly, I think everyone is just a bit bored of MMOs in general. I tend to pick up the WoW expansions and then play them for a couple of months and then unsubscribe. However, it's very unlikely that I'll play Mists of Pandaria at all when it's released.
The whole genre is a bit stale for me now.

Perhaps Guild Wars 2 will change things...but I doubt it.

You do know that Freemium or "F2P"are usually more expensive than the Sub based MMOs? But the costs in these models are kind of hidden for the uneducated kind of people.

Well that's the most pretentious thing I've heard.
"Mmm yes, microtransactions are for the SMALLER and STUPIDER people."

In all reality its easier and rarely more expensive. I think my time in a F2P game was most concentrated in STO, in which I spent maybe 10 bucks altogether and played the game for about 6 months and still occasionally play it. How is that more expensive? You do realize that 6 times 15 is 90 bucks right? That, the last time I checked, is more than 10.

Microtransactions are normally a tad cheaper, and if they are not in some cases its just easier to pay 2 bucks here or there instead of 15 a month.

But I guess I'm just uneducated for thinking that right?

actually,

he's right in that in can be more expensive, a lot more expensive, but then it for me (long time CoH player here) it's a matter of value.

the value of permanently unlocked content, for all characters, on all servers. and if i have the option of paying a little now to have a little unlocked for the rest of the life of the game. then yes, I'll drop that $5, even if it means what i spend in the shop exceeds the sub fee, cause its a one time purchase it ultimately pays for it self by just being available regardless of sub status

Isn't city of heroes sub based only...?
If not then its in the minority, most F2P MMO's I play give you more than enough stuff for free provided your not lazy.

that is what happens when you listen to your community. your game tanks!

Hooray! Now I can pick up where I left off with my Cyborg Sith Warrior! Last I recall, my slave and I were just about to leave Korriban.

Hopefully we see another 400% revenue increase with SWTOR like the one we saw with LotRO.

Typical, just bought the box this afternoon.

Woo!
Now I'll play it, in-between playing GW2. Liked the trial i played, but not enough to pay 14.99/month.

They seem to have mistaken "F2P" for the "eternal demo" model of business. If you're going F2P then all aspects of your game need to be available to everyone who logs in. By gating things off to subscribers only you defeat the purpose of even going F2P, especially in what they're doing with TOR. I see no incentive to play the game as a free user, in fact it looks more like they're punishing people who want to play free by relegating them to what is essentially the single player experience in an MMO. This reeks of crappy EA business decisions, and I'm sure they'll end up rethinking their model when they see it's not going to change anything in regards to their profit with this game.

eh ..... sorta sub based, they went F2p a while ago, and you get 8-ish years worth of content to play with plus all the power sets up to the latest expansion if your just starting. there's a graph i could hunt down, to illustrate the difference between the 3 tiers, but I'm feeling particularly lazy at the moment

point was, 95% of the sub content is purchasable, with only the end game 'Incarnate' trails/missions/powers and an extra 12 character slots being sub only far as things that matter go (yeah, 12, each server caps at like 44 slots >.> yes, my main sever is almost full ....)

and if you do a little finagling you can get some of the more spendy paid content for, like $5.
(they are still honoring codes for the Going Rouge expansion, and its REALLY cheap to get now) so there's even more content to dick around with (new starter 1-20 zone, extra game mechanic, more powers, plus a free month of sub status)
