Tomb Raider Takes Cues from Batman and Bond Reboots

image

Crystal Dynamics looked to Hollywood for a way to make Lara's story relevant again.

Origin stories can be a real drag, especially when you already know the outcome. We've seen Peter Parker get bitten by a mutated spider more times than we can count, and the story of a young alien named Kal-El has achieved downright mythic status. Even a well-worn origin story can be interesting in the right hands, though. Just take a look at Batman Begins and Casino Royale; Crystal Dynamics sure did. In its upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, Crystal Dynamics took inspiration from James Bond and Batman to learn how retelling an iconic hero's origin story can make it ring true for a modern audience.

"We knew we were facing a problem with a franchise that, at the point of starting development, had been around for 13 years," says Darrell Gallagher, head of Crystal Dynamics. "We knew that to stay relevant we had to change." According to Gallagher, Lara Croft has been a popular and recognizable character for most of her onscreen tenure, but not always a relatable one. The gaming population wants to see Lara as more than just an action hero, and Crystal Dynamics looked to the silver screen to see how other characters handled this transition. "We looked at Batman and Bond and said: 'Wow, they've really done a great job.'" While Lara is not the first character to undergo a major reboot, Gallagher believes that other characters will see similar reinventions in the near future.

Given some of the controversy surrounding Lara's latest adventure, this information could help contextualize the decisions Crystal Dynamics made regarding her character development. Not every franchise reboot needs a gritty backstory, but clearly, having one hasn't done any harm to two of pop culture's most enduring protagonists.

I'm still rooting for this game. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

I'm gonna go ahead and make the inevitable comment about how nobody felt the need to have Bond or Batman threatened with rape in their dark n'gritty reboots.

Well, unless you count that bit where Le Chiffre whacks Bond's testicles repeatedly with a rope. That was pretty hot.

They had to change by doing what all other big old franchises are doing? way to be fresh.
And they took inspiration from *hollywood*?

Captcha "same same" holy fuck captchas are freaky.

I was going to make a Batman joke, then I remembered there was a near rape scene...

OT There is dark and gritty, then there is beating the snot out of your protagonist til the audience is sick of it, and that's the end.
I'm afraid this is going to be option number 2...

I can't handle the cut scenes I've seen, they are so battering, it's past realistic.

That said, I'm still hoping this turns out. They may make an 11th hour change ala Boarderlands that saves the day.

Itīs a shame that they view the Tomb Raider franchise as a story, to me, the great things about the first game had nothing to do with story. It was an exciting adventure where you explored caves filled with traps, you raided tombs. Along the way it turned into action oriented games with less and less adventure and actual Tomb Raiding, now itīs a dark and gritty character study with cover shooting gameplay. But iīm not really into any of these gritty reboots, i prefer Burton Batman and iīm pretty sure i would prefer old-school bond over serious bond. Just donīt see why everything has to be so DARK AND SERIOUS!!!

Not really that excited, would rather have a TR game resembling the last 20 minutes of Indiana Jones 3, with more focus on traps, puzzle solving and atmosphere. Still waiting for that game, maybe some day in the future.

I'd like to imagine the inspiration that they took from Batman is that Christian Bale is voicing her, doing his Batman growl.

If they don't pull this off it'll be lambasted more than Metroid Other M, at least Samus didn't have a properly established dialogue and character in the previous games.

Also I believe this game, like all the other Tomb Raiders, will sink or swim purely due to how good the levels are, how intuitive and pulse racing the traps, how fun and addictive the platforming, and how fluid the combat is, although if they really do treat Lara as a punchbag like some sort of softcore smut porno for the entire game nothing will save it.

They're also taking cues from The Hunger Games if that image is anything to go by.

Wait. What's Lara Croft's iconic origin story?

Slightly different in that by my count Lara has no less than three completely distinct origin stories. This one will be number 4.

So it's less about remaking the origin story, and more about the character who emerges at the other end of the origin story.

Which in my opinion is far more interesting anyway.

Neither was Lara.

So before you go throwing around the "R" word, do a bit of research. Read a few accounts of the actual crime and see if any of them even remotely compare.

Ugh. This whole rape thing has set back intelligent discourse on the state of women in video games a good deal. Like you say, rape isn't even in the game. At all. A guy menaces Lara (like every other enemy in the game) and is then killed for his trouble. It was so overblown, misunderstood and argued over that people are tired of the topic and refuse to acknowledge or debate real problems for women in games. The team behind the game actually tried to be mature and give their characters personality. They actually made you think about violence in video games, and they did it in a very smart way. Can you think of many other games that put the player in a situation or state of mind that genuinely makes you want to fight back? Can you think of many other games that actually cause you to feel upset over violence? Violence is a bad thing, guys. That's the point.

But no. The public just freaks out over nothing and misses the entire point.

How many times do enemies intend to harm or murder player characters in the games we play? Millions upon millions. But the second you give one a face and actually treat the threat with an adult understanding of violence... this happens. I don't want games about rape. I don't want rape seen as a hot topic. I don't want rape seen as a way to be edgy or pretend to be mature. This was neither. What this was, was an enemy actually shown to have motivation and behaving in a way that justifies you murdering NPCs. We kill people in games all the time--all the time. Why? Because the game tells us to? Because if we don't the game will be over? Here we have a reason. We have an honest, real reason to think of something as a threat and to fight back. They actually managed to make an enemy in a video game a real enemy.

Mow down countless hordes of squishy blood bags in a shower of bullets? Cool!

Give you a genuine reason for fighting back against one enemy? ZOMGRAPE U GUYS ARE MONSTERS! Rape is not some obstacle to overcome omg

Sorry about that lol. I don't like to be so emotional, but this whole ordeal and its treatment by the public as really upset me.

You can go to hell. Your people and their tree-hugging spirituality and blatant militarism have been a thorn in Rome's side for far too long. You attacked us for trying to bring to peace and happiness of Oppaiism to your people, and when we defeated you and let you live and keep your territory you showed us nothing but scorn.

Then you tried to take over our City-State allies who had never done anything to you while you attempted to spread that filth you call "Christianity", only to be humiliated by our mighty mechanized Roman legions.

Well, fuck you. Lets see how smug you are when Edinbuurghhoweverthehellyousayit is a smoldering, nuclear crater.

This will never be as good as batman, because he is batman. Simple, that is how science works. Besides, we would be happy with good narrative, controls and a fun experience.

It was badass when Sarah Connor clubbed that creepy guy over the head, the guy that had licked the face of a supposedly medicated patient, but we panic over a man looking at Lara funny?

Guy tries to touch Lara's leg. Lara kills him. Moral of the story: don't fuck with Lara lol.

it still looked quite amazing sooo hoping it'll turn out good (and fun to play, of course)

Wait, what were we talking about again?

Oh god, my sides, they hurt....

Oh right... Tomb Raider... Ahh, well, yay for hypersensitive dimwits who are so quick to tear this game apart, by their standards, the girl I smiled to at the bar should charge me sexual harrassment. Seriously people, what the hell?

Anyway, onto a more relatable topic, I'm actually excited for the Tomb Raider reboot. Since the 90's Lara Croft has been -nothing- but a teenage sex fantasy about a kickass woman with big guns (Both kinds, if you catch my meaning). That's it, that's the long and short of her entire character. Now a Dev wants to say "hang on, why is she like that, what made her such a tough as nails, don't take any guff, shoot first and forget the questions badass?" and people get their knickers in a twist because some guy looks at her funny then gets shot (I think, I'll have to watch the trailer again, but I know he dies).

And I'm off topic again, long story short, we keep crying for devs to take more risks with their franchises, but when a big dev sees this kind of reaction to someone who actually does that, what message are we really sending? Me, I'm going to do something crazy, and actually let a developer make the game they want, and tell the story they wish to, and then, if by some odd coincidence it actually is as bad as people think it will be, then I'll add my voice to the choir, but the backlash over this is worse than whatever Million Moms has been up to lately.

Remember this from Terminator?

True story, the actor playing the orderly felt so bad about doing that, that he told Linda to really connect with her elbow when she first hit him.

Part of me likes a darker beginning to Lara's story, but, as I recall it wasn't pleasant to begin with. From what I remember from the newer games, she was in a plane crash in her youth and in one of her first expeditions she was pursued quite relentlessly by a nightmare horror beast.

I just hope the game retains, at least in part, what made the original games great.

I played that game as a young girl. I had nightmares ;-;

I'll wait a week to see if the developers have held onto their game and not given into peer pressure. If it's as advertised so far, I'll buy it just to support them.

this is not really new. they mentioned it like in may already that they used batman as an guide to tell laras origin story.
anyway, looking forward to it. looks really far more interesting then the previous once.

So apparently seeing your parents get murdered right in front of you is a totally acceptable character building device, but rape isn't. Apparently seeing the woman you love get murdered because you made the self-serving choice is a good character building device, but rape isn't. Apparently getting your vertebrae dislodged and being dumped in a hole in the ground in the middle of nowhere wherein you have to helplessly watch your city burn is a perfectly acceptable character building device, but rape isn't.

Someone wanna explain this one to me? It's not even actually rape, it's almost rape.

I donīt want to take sides, but i think the issue is that as soon as it happens in a game it becomes "fun". The Gamemechanics arenīt there to make you feel the weight that things like Rape should make you feel, they are there to make you go "huzzah, iīm having a blast killing these bastards!".

Btw, iīm really hoping that the aliens make a return in this game, that twist was awesome in the first game.

All the bond movies have been made in no specific order, I get that it was his origin story, but considering there was no previous origin story, can we still say it's a reboot?

not really...From my understanding Casino Royale was actually the first Bond story Ian Fleming wrote, but before they could make it into a movie a comedy version was made, and they had to wait for the copyright on the name to run out before they could go back and make the new version, so really it was just going back and adding in missing pieces of the story.

(like I said this is how it was explained to me, I could be completely talking out of my ass, feel free to correct me if that's the case :) )
