Borderlands 2 "Girlfriend Mode" Helps Noobs Win

Sounds like a good idea to try to help those that don't have much experience with FPS games. After all Borderlands from what I've heard is one of the best co-op games out there for the 360.

As the quote... No, obviously the entire mode isn't built with a sexist mindset and yes, obviously, the quote was a terrible choice of words and should have been phrased better to avoid making it sound sexist.

"Girlfriend Mode", making bullets home in on your target, it's perfect. Hilarious, and the fact that everybody is getting angry over a joke makes it even more funny.

Phasmal:
Wow that's a really fucking stupid thing to say.
Still, they've distanced themselves from the (stupid) comments, so there's that.
Making games accessable- good.
Foot in mouth- bad.

Yeah, the intention here is (more or less) good, but his wording of it was very poor. And with how casually he said it, I have a feeling that wasn't just an on-the-fly description. I feel like that's a term that he's used to describe it before, which paints a very bad picture of both him and the development team.

I mean, there were so many ways he could have worded it. And with how much sexism has been a topic in the video games community, you'd think he'd have caught a little of it at some point and chose to use a different phrase to describe it. Even if it was geared toward the girlfriends of male gamers (which is a valid market, mind), he could have presented it as a general introduction mode to friends and loved-ones rather than pissing in the face of every girl or girlfriend who may or may not already play games. So either he's just been living under a rock for the last three months, or his use of the term is so casual for him it didn't even occur to him that others might take umbrage. Which at best is...unsettling. And at worst it makes me want to march straight up to him, kick him in the balls with the pointiest pair of shoes I have, and ask him to say it again to my face.

"For a lack of a better term." My fucking God. There are plenty of other terms, he just didn't bother to use any of them.

Jhooud:
Why not just call it Casual-mode or some such?

Because girls can't play games hurr hurr.

so I couldnt choose this charachter if I wanted play "non-derp" mode?

I think the best part of it all is that we've got a shitload of people running in screaming.
"IT'S NOT SEXIST! LOLOLOL! GRRRLSSS REALLY CAN'T PLAY VIDEGAMZ! IM NOT SEXIST; SHUT UP WHITE KNIGHTY-PERSON!"

That right there is a sign that videogaming has some serious fucking issues with manchildren to deal with.

Both sides are overreacting like the internet loves too. What I find funny about it is I would be abusing the crap out of that tree myself. This could be a very effective method of destroying enemies with guns that have really high dakka. Will have to see myself when the game comes out.

I do love it (read: despise it) when someone says it's not sexist/a stereotype if it's true.

A lot of people genuinely believe women that enjoy games and are good at them are some kind of rarity. Don't we make up like, just under half of "hardcore" gamers? There's a reason most women don't speak up when playing games or join gaming sites like this and that's because... Well, because of threads like this lol.

"Say girlfriend mode again, mother fucker. I dare you. I double dare you, mother fucker."

Wit, wait! I got a better one.

"Oh! What the fuck's happening, man?!"

"Aw man, I shot John in the face."

"Why the fuck'd you do that?!"

"I didn't mean it, dude. It was an accident. He probably said something sexist or something."

Way to totally cause controversy through misquoting developers and misleading those with the title, this is the last time I will be reading anything by you on the escapist.

Highly unprofessional.

"Borderlands 2 does NOT have a girlfriend mode," wrote Pitchford. "Anyone that says otherwise is misinformed or trying to stir up something that isn't there."

Misquote?

"I want to make, for the lack of a better term, the girlfriend skill tree. This is, I love Borderlands and I want to share it with someone, but they suck at first-person shooters."

No, and you know why I disagree with your first sentence?
Because according to the manchildren(even the female ones) of "gaming"...It's overreacting no matter how bad it is.
Implied rape of Lara Croft making people angry? Grow a pair of DEM TESTICLES!
Uneasy about how women are seen overall in gaming? GROW A PAIR OF DEM TESTICLES!
Annoyed that even in development some ass hat decided that the best way to name a mechanic meant to be easy for newcomers "Girlfriend Mode"? GROW A PAIR OF DEM TESTICLES!
It's got to stop, and yesterday would have been nice.

Yeah, that sort of mentality works for racism as well. And it's equally stupid then. Girls are people, which I think a buttload of the male gamers forget..:They can be great at games, or good, or bad. Just like everyone else.
And yes, women make up about 42% of the gaming community. Of course, if you reference that you'll get a male gamer going "Well that counts casual games and shit like Minesweeper so it's not true!!!"
Great Cthulhu I hate my hobby sometimes -_-' I'm starting to think the Escapist is a pretty shitty place to talk about anything actually.

The Escapist is a great place! I dare you to start a thread about sexism on, say, Gammefaqs lol.

Things will change and things will get better. Although stupid things are still said and women are still some kind of "variable" to the video game formula, I think it's already gotten better, really. You don't hear "girl gamer" said much anymore, for example. Well, I haven't, anyway.

Yeah, I guess you're right. But that isn't in itself speaking very highly of this place, or the debate in general.
And I mostly hear it online...In the real world no. My wife is as avid a gamer as me, my sister enjoys games, my mom and one of my wife's aunts play games. My best friend is a budding game developer and she's a girl.

The market changes, but views get stuck :/.*sighs*Fills me with despair this topic does.

*hug* We can get through this. We can get through the dark times...

You know, that there is even discussion about this shows that some progress has been made. If he had said that and no one cared or spoke up, I'd be more worried. He said something that was most likely unintentionally sexist--in that it stems from and reinforces the stereotype of women being... less than great at electronics and needing their boyfriend to do it for them, etc.--and people straight away said hold up, that's not alright. Their PR team is in full swing trying to put out this fire.

That's progress right there.

I'm female and I actually take the "over-reaction" side over the Lara Croft issue....if people don't like seeing a female charachter in a diffucult situation then it worries me they just make them "overpowerd mary sues" with big tits

but then again thats a whole other dead hoarse that was sent to the glue factory a long time ago

but "generally" speaking overall I think the "issues with women" here are mabye inflamatory..but most peopel are more or less reasonable

it seems to be an inflamatory thing on ALL game related sites

Nice title, jackass. -_-

Someone just earned a darwin award. I realize it's nice to brush this crap off and pretend it doesn't matter but...it does. As someone said, there was a better term than that.

And how bad is it exactly? A guy made a offhand joke about girlfriends sucking at games. Was it sexist? For sure but the people who yell "sexist" handle it with as much grace as the people who are telling people to grow "DEM PAIR OF TESTICLES." I would defiantly call that overreacting despite them(people calling sexist) being right.

Anyway, was it bad as people are making to be? not really, The Tree is actually called "Best friends forever" which gaming sites seem to be skipping entirely to focus on this sexist comment. The only reason the "Girlfriend Mode" is in the title of the article because the author knows sexism is hot news right now. I would call it somewhat manipulative but I'm going to stop there.

As for Escapist being shit, it's actually one of the better gaming sites. There is a little bit of elitism here like every other site but it still has more on average, well mannered convo's. As long as you stay away from PC vs Console threads, there is a lot of great people here, you will have a hard time finding a place better that are this big.

Okay, it might be that I come from tabletop rpiging as well as gaming that I see this differently. Or it might be that I want my kids as well as the children of friends and family to have a nicer environment when they game.
But, back on topic...So to speak.
When was the last time you saw a male protagonist be at the end of a rape threat? Come on, surely a "difficult situation" is gender-neutral?
It isn't? Shock! Outrage!
Sexual violence threats are in the majority of fictional cases aimed at females. It has got to stop.
If some people enjoy it so damn much they can go play FATAL or Cthulhutech.

Because every time people joke about this stuff, it reinforces stereotypes and over time these things become subconscious fact. Here, read this and tell me if it's just a silly joke and people shouldn't care.

"I wanted to make a skill tree that specializes in thievery and stealing items. For lack of a better term, the Black Guy tree."

Disgusting, unfunny and racist, yes? That's right. It's not okay because it acts on an incredibly offensive and untrue stereotype that we want to vanish from Earth. Just as that sort of thing is now off-limits, so too do we want people to view casual sexism as wrong.

*rubs temples*Calling it The Girlfriend tree and in no way clarifying it's *HIS* girlfriend he is talking about until after the initial interview is negates the option of jokes.
I've seen a very few cases where the sexism-cry was unneeded, but mostly it's from people who genuinely want change.
Like I do. Personal anecdote incoming in 3-2-1-Go.
Tabletop rpgs, the backwater cousin of video games. In that genre a game called Cthulhutech was released a bunch of years back. Cthulhutech was ostensibly about mechas duking it out with Cthulhu and the mythos-creatures.
What players got was a game where comments like: "We use the male pronoun for players because using 'she' is Political Correct bullshit. Our hobby is mostly men. Deal with it." "All the moderate Muslims in the world has been killed by their fanatical brethren, leaving Islam a fanatical, murderous religion."
It is also infamous for using rape machines, using rape as a very ill-suited plot device...Oh, and female characters will sooner or later run into an enemy that rapes them and then they DIE.
I've argued just as much if not more that this trend of viewing women as some odd "thing" has got to stop. In tabletop gaming and in video games. Because it breeds that kind of bullshit thinking.

And yeah, I guess Escapist is alright after all. Decent enough folks like you and Boudica to debate with.

Boudica:
Damn. I was looking forward to this game. But alas, I won't be giving money to a group using such silly terms and helping to propagate stereotypes.

Adult content is adult content, don;t let the kids watch or play it

But, back on topic...So to speak.
When was the last time you saw a male protagonist be at the end of a rape threat? Come on, surely a "difficult situation" is gender-neutral?

I have seen men tortured, beaten, killed in grusome and disturbing ways....a rape threat (not actual rape) seems trivial in comparison...though in prison settings...when it isnt being played for laughs (like shawshank redemption) it was shown for the terrible thing is it

It isn't? Shock! Outrage!
Sexual violence threats are in the majority of fictional cases aimed at females. It has got to stop.
.

why?

the situation is Lara Croft is a young attractive girl out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by hardass thungs/mercinaries....in that context its a plausable outcome, so its not out of place that there is an "implication" not actual rap or ANY physical/sexual assult

what actually happens is the guy makes some threatenaing comments/actions ..Lara Bites the fuckers ear off and escapes

thats it

rape is an incredibly difficult subject to handle even at the best of times...let alone an "imature" medium like games....so of coarse there is no actual rape in the game...nor would I want there to be,

it was merely a thing to make that particular situation seem more scary/intense

don;t be silly

youre essentially giving the finger to all those people who worked on the game because of one guy who said a stupid thing...I don't know if they are caling it "girl-freind mode" in the actual game..but if it not then...well thats even more silly

why not suport a game that actually gives us decent female playable charachters?

oh

ok, I skimmed a bit...I'm an awful person

BUT my point still stands..a stupid comment made by the lead designer...and the "joke" isnt even in the actual game

yeah I don't particually like it eather but you know what? you have to pick your battles..and this is not worth it

there have been more important issues before, liek that felecia day incident, the lack of female avatars in Brink and Aliens cournel marines

but this? I don't mean to insult but with an attitude like that its a wonder you buy any games at all

but then I can't exactly dicate to you what to get angry over and what not too..I can only explain my opinion, and you may think my credibility is dashed because of my poor reading comprehension (not me though...my point still stands)

You know the thing that makes me angry about your post is that you are basically advocating against game developers speaking openly and freely about thier games.

Yes, THERE ARE so many ways he could've worded it. Yes, HE USED A STEREOTYPE to describe this game feature.
But do you really, TRUELY think he wouldn't word it better if he did come up with a better term? Give me a break.

It was a poor choice of words, yes, but that happens in an open, unscripted conversation.

And you know what? I rather have game developers slipping up from time to time than not have them speak at all.

Because that is what you seem to want. We are talking about a lead designer here, not some public relations guy with a college degree in communication. So such things will happen unless game developers are only allowed to read pre-prepared, carefully worded, politically correct statements. And we have enough of this s**t in politics.

The thing that blows my mind is that just about everyone knows what he meant, and that he didn't meant to insult anyone, but still everyone bitches about it and makes it a big thing.

INCLUDING F**KING KOTAKU, who just a week before bitched and moaned about how game developers don't talk enough to the press...well...there you have the reason why.

Games journalism comes dangerously close to being on a level with newspapers like The Sun, Bild or The New York Post, and the games community goes right along with it for falling into every blown up controversy.

I weep for my hobby and my passion.

Have you been commenting and discussing this the whole time without reading the OP? >_>

oh

ok, I skimmed a bit...I'm an awful person

BUT my point still stands..a stupid comment made by the lead designer...and the "joke" isnt even in the actual game

yeah I don't particually like it eather but you know what? you have to pick your battles..and this is not worth it

image

there have been more important issues before, liek that felecia day incident, the lack of female avatars in Brink and Aliens cournel marines

but this? I don't mean to insult but with an attitude like that its a wonder you buy any games at all

but then I can't exactly dicate to you what to get angry over and what not too..I can only explain my opinion, and you may think my credibility is dashed because of my poor reading comprehension (not me though...my point still stands)

I plan to send a clear message that what he said (casual sexism) isn't alright and I'll do that by not giving them any money. The only way businesses improves is when their money goes elsewhere. It's a vote, if you will. A gentle warning to consider their words better in future.

People spouting sexist nonsense so casually just adds to the overall sexist atmosphere. Every time such things get said, it becomes more and more normal to do so. If you let it slide, you're inadvertently part of the problem.

Sucks that he slipped up and now the entire game is to pay, but that's how business works. I make companies work tooth and nail for my money. The harder they have to try to keep you as a customer, the better services you get and the more surplus money you save to spend on important things, like charity in my case.

But yeah, you should probably read the whole thing before trying to argue any case :P

The unfortunate choice of title for this mode aside, this really does sound like a great idea! My wife can't really keep up with me, my son or my daughter. Something like this would allow her to play along with the rest of us and not get frustrated.

Why not just call it Casual-mode or some such?

I think "Best Friends Forever" is actually quite fun as a silly skill tree name.

The title of this post is a bit deceptive. There isn't actually an entire mode that makes the game easier to play (like "Story Mode" in an RPG). It's just one skill tree on one character that's geared towards requiring less skill. So calling that skill tree "Casual Mode" would be a) boring and b) a bit insulting to anyone who uses it!

I'm sorry, I just gotta ask... How the hell do you get anything done? If I didn't buy something because one guy out of the hundreds/thousands working for the company said something stupid, I WOULDN'T EVEN LIVE IN A HOUSE.

Unless you do the whole 'oh, only if I hear them say something stupid', at which point you probably don't visit any super-markets or own any video games, due to both kinds of company having either a) idiot workers or b) retarded P.R. groups that say stupid things all the time.

As for my opinion on this... well, everyone is just taking one thing that ONE GUY SAID way out of fucking proportion hear, even after he was chewed out by his boss. I'm throwing my money at Gearbox for Borderlands 2 (fuck, I'll do it more than once if need be) because the games they make is worth a billion times more than getting a little annoyed over one bloke running his mouth during an interview.

Borderlands is a game that gives us good female playable charachters (and another one in-game that is not sexualised at all) so by your logic your hurting that too

People spouting sexist nonsense so casually just adds to the overall sexist atmosphere. Every time such things get said, it becomes more and more normal to do so. If you let it slide, you're inadvertently part of the problem.

this is not making a difference though, because the issue is not clearly conected to the game...so lets say they did lose sales I doubt the reasons would lead back up to this guys comments.... it was acomment said "in relation to the game" it has nothing to do with the game itself, this wasnt like the felecia day incidetn or the incident before that where a female player was being "harrased"

Sucks that he slipped up and now the entire game is to pay,

kind of petty if you ask me

but that's how business works. I make companies work tooth and nail for my money.

no one is fighting tooth and nail for your money...you are but one in a sea of millions

The harder they have to try to keep you as a customer, the better services you get and the more surplus money you save to spend on important things, like charity in my case.

this is not a customer service issue (that would be like the female playable charachter thing in Brink)

this is a slip up

a frivilous comment

it was not made with intent....if they were calling it that in the game then sure but I am really not seeing the issue here
