No Single Player for Command and Conquer: Generals 2

The reboot of EA's popular modern warfare RTS franchise will focus on e-sports skirmish play.

Fans of Command and Conquer, one of the oldest RTS game franchises, will be aware that there's a new game in the works: Command and Conquer: Generals 2. The initial announcement revealed it would be free-to-play, the first of many other Command and Conquer titles to come. Some further details have been revealed, among them that the game will not have a single player campaign, as the developer intends to focus on multiplayer online skirmish gaming.

Bioware general manager John Van Caneghem says that this is part of an overall strategy intended to "get back to the roots of what made Command & Conquer great." Building zillions of units and blasting foes is what Bioware believes this franchise is all about, and Bioware thinks a story campaign isn't integral to that experience. Multiplayer skirmish is what the developer intends to focus on, both co-op and competitive. This is all part of a plan to turn Command and Conquer into an e-sports series. "I don't think we're making a list of the features yet," says Von Cagenhem, "but I think you can basically make a list of the assumed ones that you'd need to be an e-sports game, and it's definitely part of the plan."

Command and Conquer: Generals 2 will be the first to get the treatment, but other games in the series will follow. "We decided to choose Generals as the first set of games we build under the universe, but we'll be expanding after that, like Tiberium and Red Alert as well as some others as well. But Generals 2 was the first one, and it was one of the biggest sellers, as well as the fanbase has been asking for it for some time."

Hang on a second, I need to step out for a moment.

*steps outside. Cue incoherent and inaudible screaming and swearing*

Did anyone really expect them to actually keep the game even vaguely close to the original franchise?

Names sell, this game has nothing to do with the franchise, don't expect the gameplay you found in the previous games to be featured.

Not to say it can't be good in it's own right, but, this game should basically be considered a far flung spin-off.

Well that was an easy purchase decision, straight to the "no thanks" pile.

I wonder how long it will take to hack Their auction house?

Well I guess that means I'm not playing it.
Though that's not just because I mainly play CnC for the single player, but also because when I finally DID try multi-player I found out just how terrible I am at it...

If I want to be terrible at an online RTS I'd just play Starcraft 2 again.

This image shows perfectly the development of my interest in this game! *chuckles*

But yeah, no sp? Sorry but I prefer to play RTS with friends and when they aren't avaiable... which is for the most part of the week then I always go back to SP to do different stuff (like SP achievements in SC2). No SP = no interest.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFfffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-

Ergh.

God damn it EA.

Well. That's one more franchise I'm not likely to ever touch again, then.
Bye C&C, it was fun while it lasted.

Your....... getting rid of campaigns to "get back to the roots of what made Command & Conquer great."

Every C&C game had a campaign. Thats not going back! Its trampling over 17 years of the series.

This is just another kick to the balls. I did some online skirmishes in Generals and it is unbalanced. Maybe if they could handle doing that it would be somewhat better.

This is C&C, not Total Annihilation or even SC2.

This is what made C&C good.

The story, the struggle the cause. The gameplay and cutscenes worked together so well up to about the last of the games.

Bioware, you've no idea what the hell your doing do you? *Shakes head is disbelief"

I guess if it's free I'll try it but I'd still prefer something else...Maybe something with cheesy dialogue and cut-scenes and a bit of plot.

Well, then I won't be buying Generals 2, simple as that.

Such a shame EA also wants to fuck over their other two franchises. I greatly enjoyed the C&C series and the Red Alert offshoot, but EA just came in and fucked it.

well screw you too EA. what about those of us who don't WANT to have to play with others? I really don't like online matchmaking in rts and I have like 2 friends who might play it.
SP also allows for more crazy bullshit that just wouldn't be fun for other players in MP (the laser drill in SC2 for example) and sometimes I want to try things my friends wouldn't have the patience for (just as I wouldn't have the patience if they did it). Like when I want to steal an enemy's mcv and try a few weird combo's in RA3. like... could I nick a soviet barracks, build some desolators and put them in my ifv's?

let me get back to you on that.

Godamn you EA. Damn you straight to some frozen hell where money is permanently dangled just out of reach.

A Command and Conquer game without the ridiculously campy cutscenes is not a Command and Conquer game.

Plus, while I love RTS games, I can only play against NPC's set at the "brain-dead chimpanzee" level. At least then I have a fighting chance. Put me up against people and I get steamrolled within 30 fucking of a match.

So yeah, basically I'm going to pass on this.

I must confess that i have never ever played C&C multiplayer. But at the same time i have played hours up on hours of the single player.

I like to have a purpose. Taking over city, defending a certain part. Freeing a albert einstein. Stuff like that. A little variety instead of just destroying your opponent.

But stil... it's C&C.... and free....

Isn't Generals the one that absofuckinlutely sucked anyway? The one with shittier AI than any previous C&C game and indeed possibly any previous RTT ever?

Y'know, the one no one would've bought anyway?

Captcha: now and forever. Okay captcha, I know I reinstalled Star Control II last night, but this is ridiculous.

Just when you think EA cant misunderstand their audience anymore, they out do themselves.

well i hope this is fun for all those who want it. my zero interest has just dropped into the negative

A pity, I was actually looking forward to this. I actually kinda liked the 1st Generals, it had a few things neat little details that I liked (destroyed buildings/aircraft can actually hurt things that they fall on ftw!)

Well, it's not too surprising considering it's an F2P now, there's no point in making a SP campaign since it's difficult to make money if players just played SP.

Karloff:

What? NOOOO, YOU MONSTERS!!!! D=
Maybe I would let two games like these slide with an F2P model, but I want some old fashion C&C with a good story/campaign, skirmish, etc.

Couldn't have said it better myself.... (oh the irony)

Killed it. Just like they killed the Tiberium timeline. Arguably that killed the entire franchise but this is just another nail.

I heard this earlier and I'm not getting it now, was looking forward to it but now there is only one thing I can do.

image

Well congratulations. You've successfully killed any interest I may have had in it. I also weep for the single player game in general because how long before this becomes standard?

Dayum Shame.

Oh, well, atleast it can't get any worse.Once you've reached the bottom you can only go up!Who, am i kidding this is EA we are talking 'bout.

Fuck you,EA!Seriously, fuck you!

Irridium:

Yeah pretty much this for me too, I love RTSs but I never touch the multiplayer thanks to my inability to beat anything other than a half broken AI who just makes a million transports and does nothing with them at base (supreme commander). Plus I have to agree on the cutscenes, I started with Tiberium Wars and loved the newest Red Alert since they actually had decent story that played out in those made-for-tv movie quality cutscenes.

evilneko:

Actually, it was the best of the series.

I have not heard, anywhere I've loked, a single good thing to be said about this change. A single good opinion, or cry out positivity from fans. I wish we could make EA see this. They see what they want to see.

Save me from all this e-sports nonsense. I'm glad it's something people enjoy, but I dislike seeing my games retooled for the purpose.

Granted, I haven't liked many of the C&C games that have come out since Generals, but the first couple C&C and Red Alert games were some of my favorites.

Tiger Sora:

What about Command and Conquer: Sole Survivor and Tiberium Alliances?

Either way, the reason I enjoyed Command and Conquer so much was for the campy acting and the, at least to me, enjoyable storylines. More Billy Dee Williams; less e-sport silliness.

Mmmnope, Generals actually did really well, many people bought it, and it was a solid enjoyable game, with a great expansion to it as well.

As for the news, it's devastating. If it cost money I wouldn't buy it, but since it's free I'll try it just out of curiosity and to quite possibly laugh my ass off at EA's concept of a "F2P model", right when I assume they will be asking you to pay 10$ to increase your maximum unit size and stomp non-paying players. This game is doomed, because it's a F2P game by EA, and because you can't make a better online RTS than SC2 without putting in the required time, money and effort.

A series made popular by single player campaigns with campy cinematics and B-movie plots gets a sequel with no single player campaign whatsoever? Yeah... I'll be skipping this one, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one...

EDIT: Also, it's supposed to be F2P and focused on e-sports? I sure hope they understand that you can't do a F2P with Pay-to-win and hope for any chance at e-sport recognition. Oh who am I kidding, it's EA, they have purged the last of their common sense years ago...

Frankly, after C&C4 I'd say not including a single-player campaign is a mercy. At least that way there can be no misunderstanding whatsoever as to the nature and quality of any future games.

Were people actually expecting a free to play game to have a single player campaign? Are you fucking kidding me? It was fairly obvious from the start that this was going to be multiplayer only.

Blablahb:

Well since it was announced as free to play you cant buy the game anyways.

Well it's funny as soon as EA made the game multiplayer only a poll popped up on the EA forums asking which was most important singleplayer or multiplayer and singleplayer is pretty much wrecking at this point. I won't post the link but feel free to check it out if you are ok with entering the unholy lair of EA.
