Wii U Details Will Surface on September 13

Reggie Fils-Aime will reveal Wii U information to "change the future of gaming."

Say what you will about Nintendo's upcoming Wii U console, but there's never been anything quite like it before. Part tablet, part asynchronous multiplayer machine, and part traditional console, the Wii U is arguably an even bigger risk for the Big N than the original Wii, which emerged as a dark horse to handily outsell the two other major consoles. Many gamers went away from E3 disappointed that Nintendo didn't reveal much in the way of pertinent Wii U pricing or release date information, but that may change on September 13 when an NYC media event promises to impart some earthshaking new information on the console - or possibly just its release date and price.

Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, will oversee the conference, and has some extremely high hopes for it. According to Fils-Aime, the event will clarify "more about how the Wii U will change the future of gaming and entertainment." While the idea that the Wii U can radically change the gaming landscape is likely just part of the conference's spectacle, Nintendo essentially did just that with the Wii. Given that the company has already played a significant part in drawing women, young children, senior citizens, and casual gamers into the gaming fold, however, it's not clear exactly what's left to revolutionize.

A solid price and a definitive release date seem like good bets for what Fils-Aime will end up discussing at the event, given that Nintendo is on target to deliver the Wii U by 2012's holiday season. Anything beyond that - like, say, something that could change the future of gaming - will have to wait until next month.

Putting so much effort into marketing a handheld console is a pretty big wrist .

This time the competitors are following quicker. MS's smartglass thing is probably going to compete well with most aspects of the WiiU. If they can get it to work with the other two major OSes outside there own just about everyone will have a pre-purchased peripheral right there in their pockets.

Can we just get this over with?
I'm still waiting for this thing to bomb

Can it reliably be enjoyed without the etch-a-sketch wannabe it's foolishly being marketed alongside? That's the only question I need answered definitively before I can make up my mind whether or not I'll be purchasing this console.

I really hope so! Even after the massive regret I experienced after purchasing the 3DS, it would be a shame to be forced to let go of the Nintendo consoles after all the joy they have brought me in the past.

with far lower capabilities and no controllers.

smartglass was deigned as a simple remote control addon not a gaming peripheral.

anything it displays has to be rendered by that "pre-purchased peripheral" as you called it while what is displayed on the Wii U tablet controller is streamed in real time from the Wii U console itself meaning compared to smartglass it has far higher capabilities, battery life, screen size and actual gaming controllers.

in short the two don't compare at all nor can they ever because the 360 simply does not have the power to render two HD displays at once even if it could do the wireless streaming to a 3rd party phone.

i find certain aspects of this article and some of the comments just plain annoying.

are we still working to the pathetic and memetastic enemy fanboy script where for some reason we are still trying and present the tablet controller as the actual console itself ?

because its not.

this is the console:

and this is the standard controller:

and people (especially supposed journalists) being disingenuous about reality really piss me off...

next time we have a Wii U story how bout we actually use a picture of the console to represent it.
something i'm pretty sure the escapist probably hasn't done once in a single Wii U story thus far.

Oh, I can't wait for this. September 13th...Hopefully Nintendo won't pull a Sega Saturn (I think it was the Saturn...Surprise! You can buy one right now!). I doubt they will but I can't wait to find out the release date and, prices. It may be a commercial bomb but the fact remains that this will grant me my Zelda, Mario and, Donkey Kong fixes (plus my many other fixes). That release isn't going to be soon enough for me.

Good, hopefully this will stop those annoying ass rumours about the Wii U's specs. One minute it's not as good as the current consoles, the next it's far better. It's getting annoying.

It's not the console itself people are interested in. Its whether or not the Wii U's controller is as gimmicky as the Wii-Mote was. People will continue to talk about it until its release, you're going to have to accept that. Its what Nintendo marketed to vigorously and now that they have our attention, they've shown us very mundane things that can be done with it. The console itself is known to be the equivalent of the PS3 and 360 in power so we already know the kind of graphic we're getting, and we know most of the launch title already.

There's not much besides a price and the ACTUAL quality of the tablet controller's functions. And we know that it has a standard controller, but that won't help if the Tablet is crappily jammed into games that don't need it like the majority if Wii games had going on with the Wii-Mote.

you make fair comment but look at the first post in the thread after the OP.

simple fact is i have had to come in and remind people in virtually every news thread ive seen about the Wii U that the tablet controller is not the console because every single report we've had posted never steps outside that inference and at this point im seriously beginning to think it's deliberate because there's no way it could be that consistent otherwise.

oh and btw "power" wise the Wii U will do full full 1080p HD (19201080) in DirectX 10/11 quality whereas the 360 uses hardware upscaled 720p (1280x720) and DirectX 9 quality.

that's basically the difference gamers will actually see. its not a huge leap but neither are they they same. it was enough to drive at least two generations of hardware upgrades and an OS upgrade on PCs and those deductions of capability can be fairly made purely on the basis of the capabilities of the ATI graphics chips muted for use within the console.

I just hope people don't throw another tantrum if Nintendo doesn't show off every franchise they have. The amount of bile thrown at Nintendo during E3 was embarrassing.

i thought we had agreed that E3 in general was embarrassing ?

Yeah, that's been incredibly annoying. I think I have heard that it's not quite as strong as the 360, about the same as 360, twice and 6 times stronger. Soon we'll only be hearing rumours of a new Xbox and a new PlayStation.

I can't wait till it comes out!
No, no, no, I don't want it, I just don't want to hear about it.

I want it. I want it like a teenage girl wants sparkly vampire to stalk her.

I dunno, are you still working to the ludicrous fanboy script that the WiiU console itself shows any hint of promise or the slightest thing to generate interest without the tablet?

Without the specs, the WiiU box has absolutely no value. Oh, we could talk about the online, but Nintendo won't talk about the online except that "its better", refusing even to tell the specifics of its achievement ripoffs. (Hell, we don't even know if it has voice chat).

We could talk about the intenral hard drive size and multimedia capabiliuties - oh, right, it has no ability to play physical media, and has said next to nothing about the digital download media.

Finally some hard facts.
Everyone has just been speculating so far over everything about his console so finally we can stop whining and say "This we know, this is still a bit unclear."

No need to jump on the person and act like an ass.

the only reason i somewhat champion the Wii U is because these forums are infested with 360 fanboys who like to frame themselves as the only real "hardcore gamers" even tho their supposedly small elite clique went mainstream ages ago to the point its practically a "youth movement" now with probably more than half the kids in any given school in America, their gf, their brother, their dad and their dog all laying claim to being "hardcore gamers" online and i have a really bad habit championing underdogs especially when in this case they are the only true gaming company left in the hardware marketplace.

Thanks, I changed it for teh noms. Your new avatar looks arty.....I smell Photoshop.

I think this might bomb also, too little interest with the general gaming public. Despite this, I still want it.

Hmm, I'm still on the fence with the WiiU. I never really used my Wii all that much, especially since my Gamecube has the GameBoy Player. I've also just completely overhauled my 9-year old PC so I can play some games my PS3 can't. I think I'll wait until it's released then wait a few months after. It's probably good but I don't have money to throw away now.

Yeah, I use my PS2 and GBA more than my Wii and DS. Probably has something to do with my favourite Final fantasy games being on these two systems. Or PS1.

CAPTCHA: Carbon-copy. Hopefully not, I want a shake up and a change from Ninty.

I don't see the Smartglass following Nintendo in term of gameplay.
Nintendo's gamepad has the touchscreen and buttons in one, smartglass allows you to use a tablet, which doesn't have buttons for gaming.
You would have to use the default gamepad and a tablet in order to do what Nintendo's gamepad on it's own can do.

That is the sentiment of a lot of people on this forum .. if it is nintendo it has to suck.

As for me i want ZombiU and lego city undercover (i will probably buy the WiiU the moment lego city gets released.

(see post number 4 for how a lot of people on this forum think(also the reason i avoid most nintendo topics))

It's just childish. I personally don't like the looks of the console at all. Not my thing. But I wouldn't jump up and down and be so arrogant to assume people liking something I don't, do it only out of blind worship to a brand.

Important message to angry people: your opinion =/= fact.

I think Lego City is a launch title actually...

OT: Yes! I can't wait to hear about it! Unlike a majority of people here, I happen to be in the "The WiiU Will be Fun and successful, but not a Wii Successful" crowd. Call me what you like, but I am just ecstatic about this console. Yes, the Wii disappointed me, but the WiiU Doesn't look like it will repeat that mistake.

An early leaked list had it in the (what nintendo calls) the launch window so should be released within 2 or 3 months after the console goes on sale. I hope it will be available on day 1 (should have up some money now to get it).

Summary: an announcement about an announcement.

In general it was, but that includes Sony and MS. Those two didn't have much other than the standard FPS, and nothing really innovative (smart glass isn't innovative but rather an attempt to respond to the WiiU prototype from the prior E3). Nintendo keeps getting weird criticism which boils down to "You didn't have a 'X' franchise title" as if Nintendo should make a new game for each franchise each and every year. Nintendo also kept up with the "we have something under our hate we're not showing" which is usually revealed at E3, but for some reason they don't want the competition to copy it which probably means that whatever "it" is is easy to copy. Nintendo is already doing too much since they've been outsourcing franchise like Metroid Other M because of critics wanting franchise titles too frequently.

You don't HAVE to remind anyone of anything. That first post after the OP is either a joke or a really stupid post, in which case you should have quoted that person and called that person out. I get why you're mad about people bringing up the MS smart glass but in all reality, we still have no clue how actually good the WiiU Tablet will be. I think people are especially skeptical of it since the Wii-Mote was such a horribly used gimmick that any console that markets a peripheral more than the console itself is automatically looked at with caution.

Don't make championing a console you don't know ALL the specific about YOUR duty on these forums. It may come back to burn you. I'm not saying don't be excited for the Wii U, I'm saying that sticking up picture of stuff we know all the details about doesn't help you out.
