Senate Candidate Attacked Over World of Warcraft

The Republican Party of Maine has set up a hilarious website warning voters against a Democrat candidate for Senate who "stabs things... a lot."

This is really more of a point-and-laugh post (or a point-and-boggle, or point-and-despair, depending on your perspective) and if you don't like such things you may as well clear out now, because that's what we're going to be doing. Everyone else, gather 'round and listen to the tale of Colleen's World, a website dedicated to Colleen Lachowicz, Democrat candidate for the State Senate of Maine. You might think that Colleen or her people are behind the site, but no, it's actually her opponents, state Republicans. "In Colleen's fantasy world, she gets away with crude, vicious and violent comments," it warns. "Maine needs a State Senator that lives in the real world, not in Colleen's fantasy world."

Colleen's fantasy world is the World of Warcraft, and the Republicans have dug up a pile of old forum posts and posted them on the site alongside a picture of Santiaga, her level 85 Orc Assassination Rogue. And some of this stuff is absolute gold. The first message, from April 2009, states, "So I'm a level 68 orc rogue girl. That means I stab things... a lot... Who would have thought that a peace-lovin', social worker and democrat would enjoy that?" And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

One message calls for a fairer tax policy in the U.S. before concluding that she may need to find conservative activist and Americans for Tax Reform founder Grover Norquist and drown him in her bathtub. She also joked about being in a "socialist guild" and later expounded upon the virtues of being able to kill stuff without going to jail, adding, "There some days when this is more necessary than others." In 2010 she was apparently looking for help to "dickpunch Arthas" and also expressed confusion about why the undead eat but don't pee. Various other posts acknowledge being lazy, goofing off at work and, perhaps worst of all, expressing support for policies of the Obama administration and non-partisan initiatives.

In what I can only assume is some bizarre nuance of American politics, Colleen's World carries a boldfaced, all-caps warning that the site is "not authorized by any candidate," but the Maine Republican Party nonetheless issued a same-day press release questioning Lachowicz's fitness for office because of her Warcrafting ways. After tossing out a few stats, including that the average player spends 22.7 hours per week in the game, party spokesman David Sorensen commented on a few of her choicest statements.

"These are some very bizarre and offensive comments, and they certainly raise questions about Lachowicz's maturity and her ability to make serious decisions for the people of Senate District 25," he said. A link to Colleen's World was provided along with a promise that "mail pieces," which I assume are the postcards pictured below, are being sent out to all voters in the appropriate district.

It's hard to believe that this is what Republicans have decided to seize on as an issue, but the troubling part is that for at least a few voters, it'll probably work.

lol

i don't find it surprising at all a 'peace loving social worker' would love stabbing things.

as for the forums posts, eh, again notta big deal to me.

i find it more troubling she likes WoW then that she enjoys gaming, so many better MMOs out there ....

...this is the third most stupid and disturbing thing I've seen out of the republican party.

So she played WoW, so what?

This is why I hate politics, it's stupid arbitrary shit like this that just makes me want to bother all of them up and shoot them into the sun.

Why would anyone be surprised?

This is the part of 'legitimate rape', Creationist 'science', BIRTHERS, and...lets face it, 99% of Faux News.

While the Dems might not be all that better...at least THEIR members don't seem to be in the closet misogynists who think saying the same lie enough times will turn it into the truth.

Dammit, they didn't even get DPS right.
Fuckin' hell this is tragic.

Begs the question, can this be counted as defamation?
That would be hilarious.
More to the point, this does nothing to help dispel the stereotype of the US Republican. Which is a shame, they could have done something more intelligent.

You can't say that without listing two and one man!

She isn't even 85, fucking casual.

Who is she running against? Montgomery Burns?

The second is that press release from the Republican Party of Texas saying they want to take america back to the 50's in terms of gay and non-white rights, that science is just a theory and creationsim is the truth, that it shouldbe illegal for coporations to face any kind of ecological or economical regulations, etc etc. The first is that such a stupid and backwards party is one of the big two in the USA, where anywhere else it would be barely even counted as a party.

"dickpunch Arthas" she'd have my vote if i was american.
and she probably drops a lot of loot..

This is actually how a lot of non-gamers see gaming. It's quite sad really.

DPS (Deaths per second). Ah, so much gold here.

I usually rocked the mohawk when I played an orc, too, actually. And purple is always the best hair color for an orc. She's got style.

I wish I could've pulled 16.5k DEATHS PER SECOND (Note: Read in a hoarse and/or demonic voice) back in the day.

Would've made raiding so much faster.

She is 85, the first post they quoted was from when she was lvl 68.

OT: Frankly if she's playing an MMO that gives her a good head start above whomever is running against her in my book. If only because I think it show's she's in touch with the normal world. It always amazes me the lengths that some people will go to to discredit their opponent, even if the method should have seemed blatantly stupid from the get go.

Wait wait wait... this is Maine. Aren't statements like, "That means I stab things... a lot," basically street (forest?) cred?

Rooouuuuuuges in the Senate. *ahem* sorry.
Somebody should tell these people that who we are in games is very different to who we are in real life.

So she plays, or at least played, WoW...

I'd vote for her just because she has shown she knows how to turn on the computer.

So she lost the paranoid shut-in vote. ouch

This is pure gold, though it kind of brings up an interesting point to consider. Is this going to be common going forward, seeing as how the "internet generation" will be replacing many of these people in the coming years?

How dare someone do something violent in a video game... AND CONVERSE ABOUT IT!!

This election is getting sillier everyday. Between the rape comments and now this, how does the republic party get votes? Actually, I don't want to be around the kind of people who aren't turned away by this things (especially the rape comment. Romney, you silly man.)

*edit note*

So many of Fappy's avatar around on everyone but Fappy. Grats on 10k posts.

I could have said something snarky and perhaps a little funny (to me at least) but really aside from supporting the candidate's choice to enjoy a MMO (even if it is a bad one, gw2 and Ehmry Bay forever! lol) I don't have terribly much to say.

At least she plays Horde - she's got my vote!

No this is America WE HAVE GUNS. This is sad I mean this is the best you can get? So she pays her taxes, has no major/minor investigations, shit scare the old people say video games!

For the love of god at least find an angry ex.

Well, shooting and possibly even stabbing moose and other forest creatures is common, but killing people is usually frowned upon here just like anywhere else.

We're going to do this? Really? Okay then, here's the simple version:
Obviously the Republican party has support. A LOT of support. Otherwise it wouldn't be one of the big two, as you noted.

If you've been through the country, you'll acknowledge that wherever you go, people are pretty much people: Mostly normal, sane people you wouldn't mind spending an afternoon with. Keeping that in mind, remember that a large percentage of people in certain areas support the Republican party.

You have chosen to instantly dismiss every single person in the Republican party as a idiotic barely functioning simpleton. This means that you are taking the stance that automatically Republican=Stupid. You are instantly dismissing an entire, millions strong (Not hyperbole: See election results) party as ignorant rednecks.

This is undoubtedly a fun result, but I'd like to believe you are aware that most Republicans try to ignore the ones you are talking about. Why yes, those morons DO believe they speak for all of us Republicans. Would you like to wager I can't find a bunch of morons who claim to be Democrats that would make you swear not to know them?

Arguing with the unreasonable people gets you nowhere, and helps neither party. Instead of pointing and mocking the Republicans that even Republicans hate, you're helping perpetuate the endless stereotype war that leads to debates where each side is firmly entrenched in the belief that the other seeks to eat babies and destroy America.

Feel free to respond to this with another specific moron, but at least be aware that doing so is not helpful. Not to your party, not to mine.

CAPTCHA: Worship Nothing

On that note: I am a Republican, and I am an atheist, and I support gay rights. Aren't stereotypes counterproductive?

Plays Horde, and a proper greenskin and not a belf.

If I lived in Maine she'd get my vote. It'd be amusing if this backfired on the Reps and she got a surge in support from the WoW/gamer vote.

No taxes, No government, self employed/sustained and half the races are trying to kill you no matter what?
I think we all know exactly who's fantasy world that is!

Who's next? People who watch TV and read books? There is nothing wrong with playing a video game and posting on internet forums. What people do in their free time is their business. You can't expect someone to be serious and in a "work, work, work!" mindset 24/7. People need free time to relax and recharge. So what if her choice is WoW?

I'd like to laugh but this just pisses me off. Way to be reaching republicans*. Oh no she plays videogames SHE'S NOT FIT TO BE IN THE SENATE. fuck. off.

Edit: Before I get flamed I changed "republicunts" to republicans. I realize they're not all pants on head retarded like the ones who run this slanderous site but god damn does this rustle my jimmies.

edit: just read DPS = deaths per second. Okay that made me laugh haha

In some countries it's illegal to slander your opponents. There, you must actually advertise yourself, not accuse others.

Sorry man, wasn't trying to get into a big debate. And for the record, I'm not even American. I'm British. In fact, I live in Brighton, which is bassically the LGBT capital of Europe. Anyway, while I disagree with basically everything the right wing stands for, I got nothing against a right-wing party running for a position. Competion is good. What I got against the American Republican party is that they're so freaking dumb! If an intelligent right-wing party was as poplar as them, I'd still dislike them because of my views, but I'd at least admire them. Take a look at the English Conservative party: they're bassically doing financial class war. They're like, evil geniuses, and while I hate them for being such assholes, I gotta admit they're pretty cunning. I'm just trying to wrap my head around why so many smart people support a party as stupid as the American Republicans, when their are probably a fair few intelligent right-wing parties out there.

Eh, it should be funny to us gamers, but this is just preying on the masses' ignorance. I can just hear the creak of housewives' brains. "Look how ugly she is! How can I vote for someone who likes things this ugly! Assassination rogue! AMAGAD SHE GON KILL SUM BAHDY! Clearly a threat to society, my children, and my shitty life!"

I can just hope for this to have no impact whatsoever.

Possible state senator that plays WoW? That would equal a vote for me.
