Well that's clearly just a coverup. It's obviously some sort of cyclops that 'The Man' doesn't want us knowing about. They'll be telling us it's a weather balloon next! ;)

It's a giant squid eye. I'm more curious as to how it came out in such a nearly perfect fashion, unless they cut away some of the viscera that was around it when found. Because otherwise I cant imagine how it could come away with so little damage if torn out in a fight.
CardinalPiggles: Isn't it possible squids are evolving to have bones? I'm not sure why they would but hey.
MetallicaRulez0: This is why I don't swim in the ocean. There are things THAT big out there. No thanks. Call me paranoid, don't care. I'm paranoid and safely on shore.
I'd much rather stay on shore with you to be honest, after being nipped by a crab or whatever it was.
Well, technically it is possible, but it wont happen. Squids and octopuses actually rely on an entirely different system of movement that wouldn't work with a skeleton made of bone. Not having bones also give them a great ability to hide under rocks and squeeze together and it also allows them to survive in great depths. Technically it's not impossible, but practically it is.
Well, seeing this is confirmed to be a swordfish all the mystery is gone. Still pretty cool though.
It's the eye of the legendary thunder squid. A bio from my steam friend will explain more.

Is it even real? Is there some sort of proof that this thing isn't some sort of hoax? These weird things that just happen to "wash up onto shores" usually are hoaxes.

I'm just surprised nothing ate the eye; I thought fish eyes were supposed to be delicious to all manner of sea critters. Well, odd exceptions happen I suppose.
Able Seacat: The marine biologists shouldn't argue, there's no 'eye' in team.

I could have sworn I heard the exact opposite, that we have only explored about 5% of the ocean depths.
