Riot Claims League of Legends Is "the Most Played Video Game"

According to the popular MOBA developer, League of Legends has more than twice as many peak concurrent players as Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox Live.

What do you think the most played video game, at this very moment, is? The one with the most people playing it right now. World of Warcraft? Or maybe Modern Warfare 3? What about Starcraft? Korea has entire television networks dedicated to the game.

None of those, says Riot Games, developer of the popular MOBA League of Legends. Indeed, the developer claims that, "By hours played per month," its own League of Legends is, "the most played video game in the world." And they've drawn up a massive infographic to prove it.

The entire infographic is visible below, but here are a few of its claims: League of Legends has a playerbase of some 32 million players active per month, with 12 million active per day, and an average of 3 million concurrent users at peak hours, compared to the 1.4 million Modern Warfare 3 players on Xbox Live. Riot Games also claims that League of Legends averages over 1 billion play hours, across all players, worldwide, every month.

Such a claim is extremely bold, and may be worth further scrutiny. Most of the exact methodology of how they determined their numbers is not mentioned in the infographic, but a few of the stats are further explained, and some of them stick out as rather curious. For example, the peak concurrent players of the top 100 games on Steam was determined to be 650,000 based on one single day, while the 3 million figure of League of Legends peak concurrent players was apparently determined based on an entire month of data.

On the other hand, Riot Games may very well be correct, and a number of their statistics are much more solid. Either way, you can judge it for yourself; entire infographic is visible below.

Not surprised.

"Free to Play" and you gain a bonus once a day from winning which gets you closer to perma unlocking things.

Riot's known for inflating numbers i.e. bot "viewers" in streams.

Of those 70 million accounts, how many are smurfs?

Oh boy, this going to lengthen some e-penises.
If there is one thing LoL players love, it's look ing down on everyone.

The most important thing to take from this is that Gangnam Style has become an internet barometer for facebook likes.

Never played it, and from what I've read people say about the community on other LoL topics here, never will lol

Very bold claims.
This will be one to watch once it implodes.

I swear upon my nerd/geek-hood that i'm not saying this as a League of Legends fan (My avatar is not helping my case). But there is a good chance that the statistics are true. The comparisons maybe not. But judging by the amount of people i know that play the game i can't help but believe it.

Honestly it's not even a suprise to me because i've never seen a game development company update their game so often and keep the community involved so well in their decisions.

I have issues with LoL (Largely the community but that is no isolated case among online gmes), it's by no means my favorite game, but RIOT may well be my favorite developers.

Same here, I'm none too anxious to learn new and exciting ways to be insulted. Though I sometimes wonder if the community is really that vile, or just the victim of perception.

The Teemo death rate definitely made me laugh. However, I can't help but be a little skeptical, like is Riot only counting the original Halo, or all of them combined. Also, why Modern Warfare 3, most people I know haven't bothered to pick that one up after having already played and gotten bored of 1 and 2. They also gave away some random stuff for Facebook likes before.

Victim perception.

I've been playing since beta...and it's really nothing worse than anything you'd experience with any other online community, or sport for that matter.

Also there's a mute feature. It's handy.

SC2 MASTER RACE /jk

I have very low trust for riot right now, inflated stream numbers and the recent tournament disaster.
So im taking these numbers with a bit of salt.
And no it has nothing to do with butthurt becouse they get more views than sc2. Nothing.

Breaking news: Free shit more popular than Paid-for shit!

A better comparison might be between LoL's playerbase and those of Farmville, TF2 and/or other F2P games.

a) This image has been for ages in the net. And by ages I mean at least a week or so.

b) Not the first time this image and exact claim is made in this forums.

c) It's not even clear if it's true, as you can check here. http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/10i3sx/so_you_thought_dota2_was_getting_large/

Aaaand, I am out of the thread, don't give a crap about this or LoL in general. It's just that I am a little picky about "facts".

It is, though to be fair if you don't want bad communities never play a competitive PvP videogame. ARTS, DotA, MOBA or whatever you want to call them are just specially bad. Edit: Also, MOBA is a horrible way to call them IMO :P

Hmm..... i would have thought a lot more Teemo deaths than that. But i do guess the monthly break i took effects that number substantially.

FYI, I was referring to the stupidly OTT claims imploding, not the game. Stop drinking that troll water, it's killing your brain cells.

Wouldn't doubt it at this point honestly.
Though given how quickly their server quality went to shit on me, I'd say I got out at a good time.

100% of statistics can be made to say anything 50% of the time.

The social media one is just flat out stupid crap, you mean that LoL has more likes after bribing people to like them than a fad page that is fairly recent?

Over 90% of its players are male. Really.

Would never have guessed that one...

Every, and I really mean every LoL player that I know has at least 5 smurf accounts. With the referral system and brainless banning of people, I honestly don't believe a thing on that picture.

The fact that Riot likes to (drastically) increase the number of viewers on their streams by adding bots doesn't go in their favor.

Why don't they add on a monthly fee, then we will see how many people will actually keep playing.

Except for me, who only has one account.

Don't make blanket statements.

3 of 2 people in the world blindly believes in statistics.

Thought I must say, some of these actually look believable.

Ah. My bad.

Need coffee =).

Interesting how they released this right after their tournament blew up every other round.

Talk about damage control.

I don't know... generally speaking, going through early level dungeons in WoW won't net you being bombarded by "LOL YOU'RE A FAG, REPORTING YOU FOR BEING BAD!" like playing a few low-level games in LoL does... that's not to say it doesn't happen, it's just fairly infrequent.

I think it's just that MOBAs are more competitive by nature than, say, WoW or TF2. Sure, you run in to the jerks in those games too, but not with the same regularity as a hyper-competitive game like HoN or LoL or DotA.

Anyway, after having picked up the game a little over a week ago and promptly getting stomped into the dirt by Teemo (not to mention AP Yi, but that's something else entirely), it's funny to see the number of Teemo deaths being "recorded".

Considering that I've never even heard of League of Legends, colour me extremely sceptical.

Oh, and since I'm doing a Statistics course at the moment, I'd really like a chance to tear their sources apa- I mean, check their numbers...

Teemo deaths probably went up about 900% once the Cottontail (aka Global Taunt) Teemo skin went on sale.

1) The community is the worst in gaming history. Starting out from Level 1 these days is nothing short of a nightmare from which there is no waking. The company itself recommends playing against bots till Level 15 to avoid the cavalcade of smurfs, trolls, and people who have been banned, so made new accounts to ruin other players games.

The bottom line is: unless you ALWAYS play a five man premade with friends, you will be miserable.

2) Muting in a team based game is bad. Muting in a team based game where you can be reported for not communicating with your team is worse.

On topic: This infographic is misleading at best, and "we hired that stat guys from Fox News" at worst. I speak as someone with over 2500 LoL games played. Smurf accounts are crazy popular, and there is no penalty.

I would assume many of these stats come from the assumption that every registered account plays five or six games a day. Which is horse crap.

That is... not true. That is all I will say on the matter.

The infographic compares the number of accounts for a free-to-play game to purchase counts of $60+ premium titles, which is slightly unorthodox. (would be better served comparing itself to other free-to-play titels) It, as well, compares player counts on a single day for Steam, to the highest player count average over the course of a month. Also take note that it says "650,000 players on the top 100 games" while, for LoLs stat, it's number of uses logged on, not actually playing.

Then, it claims that LoL players rack up over a billion play hours a month whilst also claiming a little under 60% are enrolled in college.

Either those are the laziest college courses I've ever heard of or someone's lying here. Perhaps the infographic, with inflated numbers, or the players lying about their academic level. (I'm assuming the latter)

Either way, this chart seems rather misleading. A lot of these stats need more context than is provided. I'm going to look into the listed sources and see for myself which of these stats hold up. Who knows? Maybe they all do. But again, context is key.

[edit]
On a side note, Riots hyperbole aside, I'm fairly certain Angry Birds or Farmville are played more than League of Legends.

But they don't count, right guys? Because they're not "real" video games.

KeyboardSnorlax:

your very right to do so, the people that say it are correct.

Well, according to game tracking services like Xfire, Raptr, Steam and others, LOL has beaten WOW and took 1st place around like what, a year ago? maybe not that far back, but been a long time.
Now sure, this is not a define evidence as people sometimes use multiple services, or dont use either, and even play offline so no tracking and therefore skews the results (especially seen on singlepalyer based games, as more people play that offline obviously.) but its the best stats we get save for forcing all companies to show us their data.
